Newborn Seal Saved From Rope

This time of the year, we find a lot of very young seals with all sorts of entanglements. Our seal pups are only a few weeks or months old. They have just started to explore the ocean. While playing in the waves or diving deep into the waters, this little guy picked up a piece of rope. Initially, he would not even have felt it. But young seals grow very fast while loops remain the same. Every movement resulted in pain as the loop cut deeper and deeper into his skin, and death would have followed soon if the OCN rescuers had not cut the loop. With the entanglement removed, the saltwater will help disinfect his wound and we have high hopes for his recovery.

That seal was awfully small for a yearling! Now that the salt water can heal that painful wound, he/she will be able to feed and grow to normal size. Thanks, Francois and Naude!🦭🌊♻️

I know it’s naive and fanciful of me, but I wish the seals could understand that you guys are trying to help them. Wouldn’t it be great if, each time you showed up at a beach, all the entangled seals formed an orderly queue to be rescued. “Hey Dave, OCN are here. You can finally get that gillnet removed!”

Fortunately Francois spotted the young seal, so he could be freed from that tight rope. Despite his deep wound, the little one still had enough strength to swim off very fast! Thanks Francois and Naude!🙏🦭🌊

Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year. We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

Very tough terrain for a rescue. I'm so glad Team OCN is going there though, that pup wouldn't have lasted much longer. What a terrible wound, hopefully he heals quickly and is never again tangled in our garbage.

You just have to wait a minute or two here. Those rocks sre treacherous for two feet! A belly and flippers work better, but the OCN guys have to be careful! There are more of you seals that need rescue. Daily. Broken ankles can't do the work! And wow, can you swim! 👍

Are Seals born nearly fully developed? As in teeth and swimming? Don't they say humans are technically born "PREMATURE" and we should be in the womb for 12m instead of the 9ish?

These fur seals are born fully developed but need a few weeks to be comfortable in the water.
