This Newcastle Castle is in Bridgend, Glamorgan, South Wales. The Welsh call it Y Castell Newydd. (Just to clarify, the one in Newcastle is just called The Castle, Newcastle which makes it sound like a rather seedy nineties nightclub.)
In 1106, William de Londres, one of the legendary Twelve Knights of Glamorgan built a ringwork during the Norman invasion of Wales. Its sister castles, Coity Castle and Ogmore Castle were built around the same time as part of the defences of the Lordship of Norman baron Robert Fitzhamon of whom William was a loyal follower. The castle's defences were strengthened in the latter part of the twelfth century. This included the construction of a two-meter thick curtain wall around a forty-meter long courtyard.

Thank you so much for your outstanding videos. I am an expatriate living in the US and your tour of castles and monastic sights brings my childhood flooding back. I remember visiting many castles in my childhood such as Berry Pomeroy castle, Dartmouth castle, Exeter castle (Rougemont castle), Okehampton castle, Southsea castle, Glastonbury abbey, as well as the many hill forts in the area such as Hembury fort and maiden’s castle. Just to name a few. Once again thank you so very much. Hope Jo feels better soon and that everything goes well with her gallbladder.

Thank you. We really do appreciate when people take the time to tell us that they enjoy our films. It means a lot. We used to live on Dartmoor so we know a lot of those castles well. One of these days we might head back down there and make some films in that neck of the woods. It's also really nice to hear that ex-pats like yourself enjoy our films as a trip down memory lane. Hopefully, Jo's gallbladder will be removed soon and she can get back to her usual energetic self. For the time being she isn't in any pain, she just lacks energy. Thanks again for your kind words. Ian

So Newcastle ( Castle ) known locally is another one of my Local Castles, A few things you didn't mention or maybe know about, is in side the outer wall were mainly Wooden buildings which have now obviously sadly gone, Where the small gateway is to get into the Castel was not originally there. The Castel Grounds used to be bigger than what is there today. It used to stretch around the Church, the buildings on the top of the hill ( Newcastle hill ) and it included the very very old Grave Yard with only around 20 graves in. It was once an absolute Beast of a Castle

Another nice one, Jo love the gloves!

Glad you like them! She knitted them herself you know. She's such a talented girl. Also glad you like the film but clearly the gloves are the most impressive part. They are fingerless gloves with combined mittens. 🧤 Ian

Jo seems to be slightly better, although until she has had her gallbladder removed she will not be her usual bounding up spiral staircases self. She isn't in any discomfort though which is the main thing. Thanks for asking.

Cmon guys, you're in Wales. Its obviously God's game of rugby that the Norman lords wanted a great view of. The Brewery Field, home of Bridgend RFC to be exact. Great video as always.

MJ Woodroff + More likely the view of the brewery.
@MostlyCastles
@MostlyCastles 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think you can actually see a brewery from there. I believe the "Brewer" the field is named after is a family rather than actual brewers. The pub next to the playing field, the Riverside Tavern, was at one point called The Jolly Brewer, again after the family that lived there long before it became a pub. I could be completely wrong about this of course. Ian

The plan is to visit castles all over the country. At the moment we are concentrating on Wales simply because that is where we live. We do plan on getting down to Cornwall at some point once we can start travelling again. Thanks for watching 😀

Thank you. so glad to hear that you are enjoying our films. There are some cracking castles in that neck of the woods. Devon, Cornwall's neighbour, also has some splendid castles so perhaps we will have to have a road trip to see them all. 😀

Errrm, well this is awkward 😳😂 Well Newcastle is on you lr doorstep, so perhaps worth it if you’re passing. It’s not one you can really sink your teeth into and explore, as it is quite small, but it is surrounded by interesting architecture.

You know how you keep finding bits of castles looted to build local houses? How about knocking on their doors to ask for a tour of how they used the stolen goods, I mean carefully sourced ancient materials? I know it was done a long time ago, bit still, we have a historic claim.

@MostlyCastles 3 жыл бұрын
Not to worry, I have plenty of typo phases, but I'd rather typo with my own hands then fight with autocorrect. We could knock and ask, but if we knock on the door of a knight in shining armour we might end up in trouble!

Do you go to all the trouble of getting the castle details right, complete with ownership and history, then you're in trouble for misreading some goalposts! I ask you! This is a pretty abbreviated castle, as castles go.
