When I was a kid, grade 6, I was bullied a lot. I was new in town, not many friends and an easy target. It got to the point where I didn't want to go to school. One day, while avoiding school I came across a massive Newfie chained up in a yard. He saw me and instantly we made a connection. I spent my days, afraid to go to school, with this beautiful dog. He knew i was distressed and needed support. I spent days with him. He had a big barn like dog house and we would just sit with each other. I don't know if his owners were aware of our friendship, but no one ever chased me away. That was more than 50 years ago and I still miss that dog. His name was Mark and I will never forget him.

I really love that you always make a point to quickly note that a muzzle is a safety device. A lot of people seem to think its some kind of evil punishment tool but it really is about more than the safety of others; it's important for the safety & future of the dog. Even if your dog is "friendly", "doesn't bite" or has no bite history, you should ALWAYS muzzle train your dog. As a dog trainer this is a hill I will die on. Even the friendliest of dogs could nip out of fear in a stressful environment & it only takes one panicked person to call authorities & suddenly your family pet is registered on your county's dangerous dog list. I really appreciate the educational tone of all your videos.

It does matter what kind of muzzle someone uses though. She used one that is very safe for the dog and I'm sure you also use muzzles that won't hurt dogs. But there are way too many muzzle designs that constrict a lot of dogs breathing and facial movement. There are a lot of stories of how people hurt animals from improper muzzling.

People see muzzles on dogs and automatically assume they must be vicious and need controlling, but sometimes a muzzle is necessary to calm a dog or to just keep everyone safe in case of a rare bad reaction! It's ok if a dog needs a muzzle. They're still a good dog.

That is exactly why we use a muzzle on our dog. She's never bitten anyone, but she likes to protect me on walks so I can't be completely sure it couldn't happen. Most people see how good she is and feel it's an awful punishment, but it's a tool to keep her safe. I've been out with my dog and people have harassed her to elicit an aggressive response, but she doesn't give in.

It's not entirely clear, generally from what I've read, Labradors can be traced back to an ancestor breed known as St John Water dogs, which were a wide breeding group created by breeding newfoundlands with other various smaller water dog breeds (possibly cocker spaniels?) and over time the St John Water dog evolved through selective breeding into what we now know as the Labrador
@neodemonhawk
@neodemonhawk 2 жыл бұрын
Not quite. Retrievers and Newfoundlands can both be traced back to the St. John's water dogs. Goldens were bred from Labradors which were bred from St. John's dogs. Newfoundlands were also bred from St. John's being mixed with livestock guardian dogs.

Rover's makeover gives positive reinforcement but she doesn't say "good boy/girl" all the time because it annoys some viewers. Also if you tell them all the times that they're being good they'll get too excited and you can't finish the groom. Not all dogs are like that but there are enough of them for her to not say it all the time
@brandonnotsowise2640
@brandonnotsowise2640 Жыл бұрын
I wasn’t a groomer but I used to bathe dogs for a vet hospital and giving positive reinforcement is a much better way of interacting with the dogs. They are so in-tune with your emotions that if you are impatient and not understanding of the dogs ‘s fear, it makes the whole process that much harder and they will remain in their state of heightened fear. They just really don’t know what’s going on. It’s like their owner dropped them off at this unfamiliar place with all these other smells and people, so the best thing to do is comfort them as much as possible and assure them that you’re not there to hurt them. It can be tough to do that on the medical side as you poke and prod them, but your demeanor can seriously influence the ease of the process.

Some people don't get that muzzles aren't always bad, however they are sadly often used incorrectly. In a situation where a dog (or cat) is acting in any way that could endanger the person working with them it is better to be safe. That doesn't mean that the person has to be rough about putting one on though. But muzzles do seem to have a tendency to calm the animal down if they have been placed gently and positive reinforcement is given to show that the muzzle isn't going to hurt them. I used to have a German Shepherd who didn't like his paws messed with and would try to nip at me. I found that putting a strip of flannel fabric firmly but not tightly tied around his muzzle was more than enough to distract him while claw trimming without actually being enough to actually stop him from nipping me if he really wanted to. It was more of a distraction and reminder not to and it worked very well for him.

As a principle, I ALWAYS muzzle my 9 year old Malamute mix for nails. She has never been afraid to nip you enough to hurt but not enough to break skin if you're doing something she doesn't like and she's just a grumpy girl to start with. Now that she can't walk on pavement anymore (moved to a more country setting), her nails are dangerous! I took her to a groomer about 6 months ago and told them "muzzle her for anything to do with her feet" and brought a muzzle/gentle leader combo. They told me "oh, you're right, she hates her feet touched and we had to stop" 🤦🏼‍♀️

When I take my Wire Fox Terrier to the vet, the veterinarian or the vet nurses normally muzzle my dog. He tends to get a bit snappy or agitated when he's being touched or poked at the vet. At home, he's a loveable couch potato, but being near 12yrs old, my family and I factor in he's grumpy because of old age. Normally at the vet, for the safety of the staff or whoever would examine him, he gets the muzzle.

But I usually end up having to wipe those bits off before they go running around and making more mess. If they're not used to it they will freak out when we wipe their neither region.

Touching their nether régions 😳
@inbou4531
@inbou4531 Жыл бұрын
i’m a pet groomer and i completely understand doing these things to train ur dog to not bite but consistently touching their nether regions as an owner just to see if they’ll bite or not is uhhhhhh….. very very very strange. maybe don’t post about that publicly and maybe leave the genitalia examinations for the vets. and i def wouldn’t go around telling the vet ur touching ur dog’s nether regions either, ur dog would be taken from u in a split second…. maybe that would be a good thing tho since ur touching its genitals on a regular basis.
@inbou4531
@inbou4531 Жыл бұрын
and another thing, vets are TRAINED to examine an animal’s genitals correctly. and u are not, so like how are u touching them? i rlly don’t think you need to be touching their nether regions to train them when they’re barely ever gonna be touched there except for when they visit the vet. i can totally approve of sticking ur fingers in their mouths, touching their ears, paws, covering their eyes, etc. but you definitely do not need to be touching their genitals as an owner. it’s like consistently touching ur child’s genitals to see how they’ll react, it’s just strange and not ethical at all.

Glad you posted tonight, especially with such a big, cuddly, gorgeous ball of goofiness! My big, blue boy is at the vet's overnight. He got a foot into a (previously nonexistent) hole in the fabric part of his sofa's structure (he's a greyhound, they need to be off the floor), and though he didn't so much as squeak, hubby found him pouring blood out of his leg. He had to be rushed to the vet's for an operation (out of hours of course!), because his leg in that area - and most others - like all greys, has no extra skin to be able to do something quicker like stapling it. He's spending the night there so they can keep an eye on him and give him pain meds if necessary. I got a call from the vet after the op (she's also got a blue hound like our boy, so we knew she'd be right for the job. They're a species unto their own - that's her opinion too lol) to say he's doing fine, thankfully, but the bill is going to be between £600-800! For some tests and what turned out to be a much quicker op than expected. That's, what, $750-1000 US? (Just a guess, maybe not quite so much. The rate changes all the time.) He's worth it, though, especially as he's going to be our last dog. That sounds bad, all our dogs were worth every penny we spent on them and more, it's just that because we know that when he goes, it would be wrong of us to take in another (we're both disabled and deteriorating - hub "walks" Buddy using his mobility scooter), so we're more aware of how we're treating him. He's also the only hound we've had who has ever loved, or even remotely liked toys (socks are popular. And the kids' fluffiest teddies. Basically anything made of soft material they can cuddle), so he's got a pile of them! Anyway, sorry for letting off a sort of steam here. I know that you'll all understand my worries. He's going to be absolutely fine but I want him home, though he's currently in the best and safest place for him to be, so I have to suck it up and wait till tomorrow to get him. He will have the cone of shame, and he deserves it! The pilchard...🤦🏻‍♀️
