We use a simple technique to PLAY JAZZ - RIGHT AWAY! Without thinking music theory! The theory we add later on in this tutorial.
We explore a SIMPLE TECHNIQUE to connect the left hand chord pattern with the right hand upper structure. By using the very same technique we can play many different kinds of thrilling and HUGE JAZZ CHORDS and we can make smooth chord progressions and JAZZ VOICING from one expanded chord to another.
Enjoy this Jazz lesson about chord voicing and feel free to ask questions in the comments below :)
The best and warm regards from Oliver Prehn :)

Agree,I think he’s probably already done all that, there are quite a few great musicians that don’t become famous for whatever reason, the current and not so current pop culture for music is deplorable.

All of this is worth gold, any jazz musician will agree. I've been using this for years. This is the single best technique you can learn to make you a more complete jazz pianist. Melodic Minor is a haunting scale. This video combines several of the most important advanced concepts: melodic minor modes (the best jazz scales), left hand rootless voicings for trio (aka box voicings, universal voicings), diatonic (to the melodic minor asc.) upper structures, functional harmony, 2h comp voicings for trio, 2h voicings for solo piano etc.. and my jazz friends, this actually just scratches the surface of what is possible with this rather simple shaping concept. If you manage to make all of this automatic (no thinking), this will skyrocket your improvisations. Tip: I suggest you to spend A LOT of time with just this left hand shape from the beginning of the video. Check out the youtube channel of Tony Winston or search for "box voicings". If you start to understand it from there, you'll find many many more ways to use this technique! Thank you Mr. Prehn for making those high quality videos, your efforts really shine through to us.

(Just to state the obvious) The usual way of "teaching" on youtube is showing off your knowledge in a fast, entertaining, funny way. But this here, while not optimized for being entertaining, is optimized for teaching efficiency imo. It gets stuck much better because of low speed and repetition and feels like a real lesson. I'm grateful

I always wanted to play jazz. I started playing rock on the drums at 14 then jazz rock, I learned simple piano chords and melodies. I play simple guitar chords. Now I am 60 and have more time for music. By watching your videos I have learned so much in a short time. I write my own songs and just played recorded my first jazz piano solo last month. I am really practicing hard and enjoying learning through your instructions. Thank you very very much. I have recommended your teaching to my other musician friends. I'm glad that one is not wasting time on youtube but to learn from great teachers. I'm learning so much from this musician and teacher. This is one of the rare greatest lessons on jazz piano. I'm not a pianist, but a saxophonist. Sometimes, as a saxophonist, Sometimes I go somewhere where there people and the piano and I want to do something impressive as a musician, most times I failed to do anything impressive so that people know that I'm a musician. But with lessons like these, I instantaneously become a great musician in front of people and they immediately recognise me as a great musician. This channel, new jazz is great!!! Thanks

Thank you so much for this video! As a classically trained pianist/organist trying to learn jazz improv this makes so much sense. Also, it’s nice to have something big sounding to play right away as opposed to just scales or pared down voicings - not that I’m opposed to scales or minimizing when necessary. It’s just so fun to play all these amazing chords so quickly. Because of my experience I can see how growing mastery will only improve creativity. Thanks for this simple, yet thorough tutorial! I can’t wait to work through it more on my own.
