I typically see feathers start around day 4, by week 2 their bodies start to be feathered pretty well. Week 3 they look like miniature versions of what they'll be as adults.

How long are you supposed keep rocks in the water dish. Because I have had my quail for like a week now and they all are pretty big so I don’t know if it is safe to take the rocks out yet. Also I just want to say you video has been a life saver and something I go over a lot when I have questions so thank you for your help.

I’m so glad you’re finding the videos helpful 😊. As for the rocks, just use your best judgment. They do become mobile quick so take them out and see how they do. If they are climbing all in there and getting wet so may want to leave them for another week. You just don’t want them to get chilled because they can die quick.

I prefer a heat plate because I don’t have to worry about having a secure way to hang it and they seem to really like snuggling up underneath it. But just my preference. Thank you so much for your comment and for watching. Really appreciate it! 😊

Awesome video thank you. Question, do you use the pine shavings and heat plate in the puppy pen also? I'd like to get away from the heat lamp ASAP. My garage runs about 84 degrees normally so I have to raise the heat lamp way up high to keep it 95 on the bottom of the tote.

@@ScreamPotato yea you’ll love that because those little suckers sure can fly. I unzip one of the doors just enough to get the cord of the heater through. Works great! A little to clean, but I’ve gotten to where I just keep piling the shavings on daily to freshen and it works well. They grow so fast that it works. Then when they move out, you’ve got lots of good stuff to add to the compost.

My son just had one of his eggs hatch and it’s the cutest. The other 4 have not hatched yet. The one that shell was cracked two days ago has not come out yet. We could see it breathing through the shell and chirping but have not heard it again. This one that hatched completely took us by surprise. We not sure what to do with them going forward once they have all hatched. Still learning. This little guy went to sleep on one of the eggs for about 10min and we heard him chirping. I read that we should keep it in the incubator for 2 days after hatching
@SimplyMadeHomestead
@SimplyMadeHomestead 2 ай бұрын
Yes, once hatched they need a couple of days to dry off completely. There is a playlist on my channel for raising quail and I cover everything there from hatch to harvest. As for the one that had cracked its shell, if the incubator was opened before it hatched out completely then it was probably shrink wrapped in the shell. The dry air from the outside of the incubated rushes in and dries out the membrane inside the shell and the baby gets sealed in the egg where they can’t get out. That’s why a high humidity is needed in hatching for the shells to be soft enough for them to break through. But too high humidity, they can drown in their shells. Here is the link to the playlist: kzfaq.info/sun/PLAs5iHYl7ol9kzHmiprKlB8_hnYZGGK8b&si=J_LOYTmIilYH2MbP Best of luck with your quail! 🌻

It helps them to keep a healthy gut. I give it to all of my animals monthly. If you ever see a chicken with a dirty butt, you know they need some apple cider vinegar in their water. Sourdough starter discard is really good added to the top of their feed too and they love it.

Are valley quail chicks tough? I seem to lose 4-6 in the first 6 days.
@SimplyMadeHomestead
@SimplyMadeHomestead Жыл бұрын
I’m sorry, I don’t have any experience with valley quail. But be sure to have a thermometer in the brooder (under the heated area) and keep the temp at 95 degrees the first and the. Lower the temp by 5 degrees every week. Make sure they have an area that isn’t under the heat where they can go if they get too hot. If they get chilled they can die quickly. And they don’t like drafts. No fans or open windows until they are fully feathered.

How much water in the vinegar sugar solution?
@SimplyMadeHomestead
@SimplyMadeHomestead 4 ай бұрын
The vinegar/water solution is 1 T vinegar to every gallon of water. As for the sugar, I just add a little, maybe a Tablespoon. You can use molasses in place of sugar which would probably be better and more natural. We’ve use molasses for our mama goats and pig after birthing to give them a boost.

How many coturnix Quail chicks can I keep until they are completely feathered out inside a 50 gallon tote?

I honestly don’t know. I’ve always had around 50 every time and at about 2 weeks old I move them into a 48” octagon shaped puppy pen. They probably could have stayed in the tote longer since they’re so small, but they get so stinky and it was easier to keep them fresher in the bigger pen.
