I own these speakers. I’ve had many other speakers of higher cost. These are absolutely terrific. Ron, your reviews and your humble nature are appreciated. Top to bottom, these are extremely cohesive. You can not go wrong and the reviews like this are 100% on spot. I use Pass XA100.5’s with them; 200w pure class A. They also sounded amazing with my Audio Group Denmark Axxess Forte’ 3 integrated. I can’t wait to try them with some EL34 mono blocks.

One cool feature about this one is that it crosses over at 130 Hz to the base drivers. This means that you can implement Dirac live or other room correction (Lyngdorf, mini dsp, etc) as if these are subwoofers by adding two monoblocks directly to the woofers. Hello ganfet by Orchard. Then part of the crossover can be disabled. So you can feed only the coax drivers by a much smaller amp. Hello 300B SET. For the coax drivers the Crossover can be replaced by the one that gr research did for the source.point 8. Although, the 888 crossover is already way better than the one for the sourcepoint 8. From some of the show reports, the 888 already performed superbly well. But I believe with the changes above, that it would be very hard to beat. ⚡️⚡️⚡️

On my system, these speakers sound closer than anything previous to them in matching my home setup. The in room response helped with the bass on the last couple of sound clips. The holographic sound stage is an important part of the presentation that I could hear a tiny bit of in the in room response, especially in the vocal reverb. Sweet sounding speakers.

i was thinking about that 130hz crossover point, there is some benefits with crossing over higher. those 70hz extra up to 200hz would have added some impact to the sound higher up. and made the crossover parts smaller, there are some huge coils involved the lower you go in hz, either lower the cost or used higher quality parts if you did so. assuming no other drawbacks..... and the midrange would have even less bass to play. that is my experience playing around with crossover from larger woofers to midbass drivers, 80hz to 300hz i have play around with. there is some magic happening when you let the larger drivers or larger cone area play higher up, assuming the cabinet and damping inside is up to the task.

I agree. And Albert Von Schweikert does too. My VR-4 Generation II cross up to mid at 185 Hz. Also has lower at 65 Hz and double transmission line.
@TheMirolab
@TheMirolab Ай бұрын
The three 8” drivers are fairly far apart, and the directivity narrows as frequency goes up. You will get beaming and phasing starting to happen as you raise the frequency, and I’ll bet that Jones labored greatly at settling on 130Hz. The reviewer stated that driver integration was superb, so I’m thinking Jones chose correctly.
@sudd3660
@sudd3660 Ай бұрын
@@TheMirolab within hundreds of hz you are fine with meters of spacing, lets say 200hz you can place woofers a meter apart. and my point was the benefit from increasing the crossover point, not the possible drawbacks.

I think that would be low to crossover it wasn't using such a large mid . That's subwoofer territory. I have heard some expensive 3 ways that didn't blend right because they crossed low with to small of a mid . On the other hand I have designed a 2 way with a 10 "woofer crossed at 1400 with a 3 rd order crossover that sounds and measured amazing. I can crank it with no distortion, but the cabinet is built like a tank literally.

John Hunter, from Rel, has a video showing how to set the gain on a sub. Basically, you don't listen to the base but instead, you listen for peak performance of mids and highs. I figured it would also apply to my bi-amped quad 15" woofers as well and I was right. My MTMs achieved a massive improvement when I tuned the base correctly (they were previously too hot).

@@glenschneider5978 I assume you are asking Ron, but I think I understand why. The sound signature is essentially the same as the other models. I believe he has already compared a pair of the Source Points to other speakers in another review.. Doing it here would not not be much different and esentially repetitive. The real question in this review, is why would you choose the Triple 8's, over the other Source Point models? And is the the extra cost worth it. I think that is what Ron was trying to answer with this review.

Well, the 8's are going to be playing bass through it's only woofer, coloring the mids a bit and reducing the soundstage unless you cross them over really high. But then you end up with localizable bass from the subs so they must be positioned symmetrically near the 8's. And you have to really know your stuff in terms of integrating the subs in order to get them sounding good. I think it would be easier to end up with a great result with the 888's but your approach could work well if done right.

On my cheap system the 10's were very close to source. 888's had much more, deeper bass. I would pick the 888's because I don't use subs. Tried them, don't like what subs do to music overall. You can always turn down bass and hear more midrange, but you can NOT get more bass from a speaker that is not capable of deeper bass (my past B&W's come to mind). Just my thoughts listening with Elac Debut Reference's. Great review. Andrew Jones did it again!

subs do the music very well, the thing is... you KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY INTEGRATE the dual subwoofers in the chain?, the answer very often is NO.

@@Newrecordday2013 Ron, I really enjoy the comparison between the sound clips, but I think you can take it a step further using shorter clips at times. For instance, playing just 2 or 3 seconds worth of drums on the reference, and then on the speaker being reviewed, would make it even easier for people to hear the difference between the dynamics and impact of the two speakers. A drum sample that starts high and then descends lower and lower into deep, bellowing, thunderous impacts is such a great way to examine a speaker's ability to recreate low end and dynamics accurately. There's a great video on YT titled " Drum Collections - High End Audiophiles SoundCheck - NBR MUSIC." From drum nares, to deep impacts, it's a great jam session style recording. The whole recording is fun to listen to, but there's a great section from the 9 to 9:15 mark that starts high and descends lower with great impact. Probably a great section to compare the ability of two different speakers. Keep up the great work amigo!

this remember me a little of the concept 500 sound, just with more LFE and the concept 500 having better innert cabinet, more coloration and warmth? i had a KEF R and the concentric beneficts i only hear them when i get up from the chair, at listening position the c500 to me sound like my previous point source, i also think the c500 should sound more holographic wider

Hey Ron, does this remind you of another speaker that you've reviewed? By comparison, the 888s sound very close to my Prime Pinnacle OGs that I bought on your recommendation. Deep bass, neutral and open mids, and a smooth top end. Well done Mr. Jones! Thanks for another great review Ron.

My guess he'll like the ATC's for their fantastic midrange. He's probably going to love the Alyssa's for their detail. He won't get on with the Studio 89's that well as they lack some body to notes. Great list.

So can you get the advantages of the 888s by using 10s or 8s with a sub crossed at 130Hz?

Nice review. I hate to say it... but both the 10 and the 888 sounded great. A slight edge to the 888 and I have to believe that they would sound even better in person. ( I'm using Dita Project Ms for my IEMs and no EQ. ) I can't be the only one to have a hard time hearing much of a difference. Anyone else? Price wise... $3K (Point 10) vs $5K (888s) either would be a good fit depending on budget. BTW, Erin's review is out now... my next thing to listen to.... :-)
@bearclaw5115
@bearclaw5115 Ай бұрын
I can hear the difference fairly easily. The 10's have crispier vocals and more bass intrusion into the vocals as well. The 888's come off as more pure to the source but maybe less exciting depending on your point of view. For someone like Ron, these differences are everything. For most of us either will do just fine.
@michaelsegel8758
@michaelsegel8758 Ай бұрын
@@bearclaw5115 I should clarify... I could hear a slight difference... and yes the 888s sounded cleaner... but it was subtle and both were extremely close to the source. I mean if you weren't paying attention and doing casual listening... you probably couldn't tell which was which. Its not like a night and day difference.

130hz is a nuisance frequency in smaller rooms, ie. the room usually amplifies it. So crossing over at that point might be helpful.
