Truth of the matter is that it's expensive for small scale farmers to take maize to NCPB - transport costs and delayed payments. small scale farmers prefer selling to middle men. You can argue all you can but that's the reality on the ground

In fact its simple mathematics. If the farmer is hustling best price they could have found a way cut costs and competed. But when you promise the farmer 4000 before planting and you promise the farmer the price before planting......then the farmer will do everything to buy fertiliser hire workers do everything to produce maize. ... Then the same govt buy Mexican maize at 3600 and tell our farmers 2300?????? Yaani even giving the farmers the 3600 will gain the govt much needed tax and kuboresha maisha ya mkenya jijini! Mathematics.

Maize is a Kenyan staple. Government takes 4m bags to SGR and we produce 37m bags. The demand is 50m bags. If you want to feed a nation, it is counterproductive and counterintuitive to import maize cheaply from heavily subsidized foreign farmers, who by the way could be Kenyans with huge tracts of land in Brazil, Congo and other places at our expense. Pay the farmer 5000 per bag and don't do a railway line that farmers don't need.
