London is not burning - its already burnt down! There is nothing and I mean nothing for local Londoners who grew up in the city decades ago. Best thing just emigrate like most have, I dont know the place anymore, no pubs, no locals, no community, no friends you could meet up in your local - no identity.

I grew up in Olney rd. Pie and mash from Westmoreland strret. Manor park baths and East lane were my favourite places. Cherry pies from the butchers by Marks and sparks. My first real job was in Cedars menswear, Opposite the Barbers next to the Temple bar. I miss London.

Hard to believe that back in the 70's/80's Walworth road and East Street market were so mobbo you could barely get on the pavement . Sundays were absolutely packed with people coming from all over . Good to see that Arments is still going strong .

Thanks evs but when I saw "the change "coming and with the greatest of reluctance I jumped ship and moved 12 miles to The S E London / Kent Suburbs where I have had a wonderful further 37 years making me 66 now but I STILL miss The Walworth Road every day. It's 10am now in THe Suburbs and it's lovely and safe, as I still have no back door lock since 9th May 1983 but if I go into my road I will be lucky to see 1 or 2 people. I lived over East Street Market so I had thousands, every week, on my doorstep + The Walworth Road and Old Kent Road the other way..

There was once a proud and hard working working class community here that had no computers and lived their lives locally. Using the local shops and markets. We had pubs, youth clubs and we were as one. Then came the knocking down of the old community and the building of the huge sink estates that became crime ridden. People that could, left for safer pastures, leaving the dross behind to take over. Alongside this came the hipsters and yuppies, living alongside the crime and the squalor, while looking down at the dross from their glass castles in the sky. What has happened is nothing short of social genocide.

EXAMPLES of living there in The 1960's/1970's: : London Evening News vendor left his money bag and papers in the street overnight for anyone to buy a paper. TRY THAT TODAY...My Uncle pulled up at Bus Stops and gave 3/4 strangers lifts home if going his way. The Council Rent Man carried (the equivalent of ) thousands of Rent money on him with few problems. My council block over East Lane Market was accessible to all with no problems as it was so safe. NOW? TWO Security numerical systems and some Grills on lower balconies clearly shows the demise in the area. I broke down in my car twice there and a crowd fixed the first problem and the second time these strangers pushed my car 1/3 Mile home as The A A had different roadside rules then. SAME AREA.....Could you do any of those things today and Banks were Open Plan as were Building Societies...

London is not a place for anyone who does not own property, have a degree or have a well paying job (over £30k). If you do not own your flat/house you will have to pay market rent or leave. There is no longer a role for working class people, tradesmen, manual workers etc, no matter how long they have lived in London.

Walworth rd is a street that Southwark council and the government doesn't care about. It's like a place that doesn't exist anymore. Christmas time is like it's not happening in Walworth Rd, barely any Christmas lights just a piece of tinsel and a string of lights wrapped around the occasional lamp post. East St Market has also gone down hill drastically. Its sad because it used to be a busy place.

I moved to north London long ago from south and all thought there’s run down parts here compared to south it’s a palace! Walworth road, old Kent road, PECKHAM, camberwell, the blue, tower bridge road and Jamaica road are all shit holes. From the council not putting into these areas they line their own pockets instead but it’s also the people they put in them areas to live some of these people are just grim. Like the guy said people have no trust in being in these places because of the locals. I’m 31 and going back to when I was about 8 these areas have always been shit holes they’ve just gotten worse

RUBBISH! UTTER NONSENSE ! So Filiz you were born around 1989. I had moved by May 1983 as I saw the area deteriorating but it used to be wonderful which is why The London Evening News Vendor left his moneybag IN THE ROAD overnight with a stack of papers and collected it in the morning. My old Council Block did not need any Security by now has 2 numerical Security systems and CCTV and Grills. There was a genuine Community prior to those Estates being built. Even The Council Rent Man only collected cash as he walked freely about..The 1960s were fantastic there as were The 1970's..

Grew up in John Ruskin Street for over 25yrs (and recently moved to Dulwich) and I'll give you an idea of what happened: Parking restrictions killed markets/shops Rent increases (residential & business) Social housing explosion Forgotten during recession Condensed poverty Zero council investment in area Closure of community halls / youth centres All pubs died off Dumping ground for immigrants (not the immigrants fault) This is all in the play book for the gentrification plan for the area that is in progress.

At the video time of 6:30 minutes: Maybe, also, there are too many websites. It is really the new age of Amazon, eBay and the like which is disrupting the mom and pop stores as these, as well as other hippier stores and vicinities. The Walworth Road has always been a small business endeavour and now for the above reasons is falling by the wayside with these merchants are still with one foot in the past. This is sad when some snot nosed kid is raking in the millions by snaking stealthily into the new system of sagacity, subjugating small shops.

Like all shopping streets in ALL of the developed world .They are dying due to changing shopping habits. Everyone buys on the Net and stuff gets delivered to homes. We prefer to sit in isolation at home and view a screen rather than walking (Ha,Ha ! ) to a retail street. The solution ? There isn´t one. It is called changing habits. Very regrettable but irreversible .
