Juhu Iskcon is just 2-3 kms from my house and yes many actors stay in Juhu especially old timers. Amitabh stays just 1 km from the temple. The concept of "Daan" : By doing "Daan" (i.e. Donating) of anything to someone,the donor "transfers" his sins to the acceptor. This is the reason for donating.Infact, the acceptor (usually,a Brahmin) recites a sanskrit mantras which say that, "to get rid of 'so and so' sins of the donor I am accepting this donation", at the time of accepting the donation. And, the acceptor , has to perform a lot of recital of "japa"(i.e. meditation on mantras) to clear-off his sins, which he will do afterwards. (This should NOT be misinterpreted that any sin can be got rid off. Only the sins , which are done accidentally will be cleared-off. Not the sins performed wantedly.Otherwise, everyone will start doing whatever ill-deeds he wants to, and give some donation.) And, by donating a cow, the donor gets rid of so many number of sins as the number of hairs on the entire body of the cow. Hence , doing "Go Daan" (donation of cow) is so important. And, why all these donations are asked to be given to only a Brahmin? Is it because of any caste dominance or so? Absolutely not. After the donor donates any donation , if the acceptor does not perform "tapas"(i.e. meditation of mantras of the prescribed number of times, e.g.. After accepting donation of a cow, the acceptor has to perform "tapas" so many number of times , as the number of hairs on the entire body of the cow,usually, around a crore times.) If the acceptor does NOT perform the meditation of the mantras sincerely, the donor gets his sins not cleared -off, and on top of it, he gets additional sin of donating to someone who is not sincerely doing meditation. Hence, the donor usually is very careful in selecting the acceptor. Since a normal person usually may not have the patience and perseverence to do the meditation, he usually takes the help of a Brahmin for doing this,i.e. a Brahmin does the meditation on behalf of the donor, however ,the sinner has to give away something as a token of the help he sought. Hence he performs the donation. Usually Brahmins are really strict in praying sincerely. Hence , people donate to Brahmins.
