Yes now being an armchair retired (capt) I am going to give the firefighters on the nozzle E for effort, but regarding (based on observation) fire-ground command and control it was seriously lacking. Properties such as this vehicle unless posing an exposure threat should not consume initial (limited) resources and water supply. This vehicle based on involvement and age was a low priority. The structure and its contents (propane, acetylene, gasoline containers, etc.) and other exposures structures were priority for quick knockdown. Also a recommendation which circles back to command and control whenever personnel is limited often can accomplished more with a smaller handline 1-3/4 or 2 inch. But hey the fire was successfully extinguished!

That was a perfect time to use the Deck Gun . Knock down the garage and put water on the house behind the garage . That would have given them enough time to get a water supply to the Engine . And the engine should have picked up a hydrant on the way in . And I only watched the first 3 minutes ...

Looks difficult for them to use a 2. 1/2 inch on car fire /fully involved garage,in my fire fighting career we would of pulled inch and half lines 1for vehicle and couple others for garage structures and dropped a supply line rolling in to incident and then what ever else is needed for incident great filming 👍👍😎🚒🚒👨‍🚒👨‍🚒

retired deputy chief here, (not from this dept) one thing i always told my men was "what ever you do, do not become a what not to do youtube training video". NOW OBVIOUSLY NONE OF US WERE THERE AND WE DO NOT HAVE ALL THE DETAILS BUT... where was command? was a 360 done? why a bulky 2 1/2 when even a single 1 3/4 with someone that knows how to use it could put out more fire than these guys did from the start. exposure control? who cares about the phone lines that are burning or the car, protecting the other structures and life should be priority in this instance! i know manpower comes at a premium these days but you have to train with what you have and train often. total lack of initial effort on just about everyone's part here. remember you can never train enough for a job that will kill you! stay safe brothers!

It appeared to me with 2 fire trucks, the should've been at least two hoses deployed upon arrival. The 2nd doesn't appear until a few minutes later. Up to 8 minutes. Great video!

This is the 10th video I’ve seen of firefighters going at this speed; something isn’t right. I’m not a firefighter but i am a homeowner and if I saw this speed I’d freak out.

Great video. Its easy to criticize when watching videos like this but I'm sure that some of the fire scenes I've been on could draw criticism just as much as this one did. They could've gotten that second line going sooner, but once they got organized they made a good knock down. Just watch where you're aiming your nozzle, you don't want to blast another crew in the face. I've had it happen. Also be aware of your surroundings.

Great job, you almost put a car fire out with a 2 1/2" and 500 gallons of water.

Also, there are a number of comments about darkening down the car fire first. Understandably, exposure protection should be a priority at any fire especially when the original fire building is fully involved and beyond saving. However in this situation it appears there are two exposures being threatened. One is visible directly behind the car (with visible radiant heat damage already) and one beyond the burning garage. Both need protection. When the initial line is in position to knock down the car fire it IS protecting one of the exposures. The one most easily protected at the time. Consider this situation. What happens when the 2 1/2 bypasses the “insignificant” car fire? The crew is operating on the garage when a fuel line on the car fails. Now the hose crew is stuck between a fully involved garage and a flammable liquids fire with a unmanageable 2 1/2. What would the comments be then? “Should have put the car out first”??....... Fire ground and hose crew common sense is that the hose crew never passes a fire. The crew should never be, or allow their own actions to place themselves in a position where the fire is or can eventually get behind them.

It seems to me as an non fire fighter that the US departments invest in very large trucks but two turn up and only one hose for a while. Seems a mismatch between equipment and initial fire control.

two separate fires and one line for first several minutes. enough manpower on scene to handle each fire individually. would have avoided later cross fire of hose streams hitting hose men, and allowed for direct stream on garage and on car by two lines. fortunate that the garage was unattached.

You can't put out a car fire unless you start with the tires. Tires retain an enormous amount of heat and can reignite unless adequately cooled.

the 2.5 hoseman is definitely being handled by the hose more than he/she is handling the hose. Also, DO NOT STAND UNDER WIRES THAT HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO HEAT FELLAS, very unsafe scene

I say this all the time, just because the book says big fire pull a big line you need to think first. One thing I see is the person on the big line never has it open all the way. The next thing is they don't have a water supply yet. Lastly they can't control it very well due to lack of manpower. I could of gotten better results with a wide open 1 3/4" line than they did. Keep the big lines on the truck for a house fire.

There’s a lot of comments faulting the use of a 2 1/2 line. It is common for departments to lead off with 2 1/2 lines on exterior attack fires. Everyone throws around the phrase “Big fire, Big water”. Well...... I personally wouldn’t consider this to be “Big fire” but other people may. We also don’t hear any prior dispatch or radio audio. If this was reported as, or confirmed to be, fully involved early on then there is no reason not to start thinking 2 1/2 coming down the street. A report of a “fully involved garage” fire and a vehicle fire could be anything. Pull up to a Single story garage with the car outside.......maybe in hindsight the 2 1/2 was a little much to lead off with. Pull up to a large two car garage with the vehicles inside.......stretching the big line is not necessarily wrong. Dare I say the word foam?

Non-fire fighter here, so no flames please (pun intended), but what I noticed is that it took 3 minutes from the time that the 2 1/2" hose was laid out, until the 1 3/4" hose was laid out. Why couldn't they pull both of these hoses out at the same time? I don't know about decisions on which one to use, but they had 2 fire trucks there and it seemed that they just took a long time to get the hoses out.

Kudos to all firefighters BUT: there are obvious mistakes but I think the worst was the lead guy on the 2 1/2 ending up having it pointed directly on his face. Made me cringe!

Are they using caf? I didn't notice that at first, so maybe the 2.5 is correct in this situation. Company SOPs might have them use the 2.5 first on a involved structure.

I see the following happen all the time, and it never makes any sense to me: FFs will spend twenty seconds or so dousing a vehicle, then ignore it and let it burn for another five minutes rather than putting it out completely. I would presume that a fire in the rear wheel-well is in close proximity to the gas tank.

personally knowing a lot of Fire Fighters, I'd ask that all these fire fighters get a BAL test. the two on the 2 1/2 were in trouble, one or two more men on that would have been nice to see.

Why the 2.5" attack line for the car?

As with every profession these days, firefighting has fallen victim to excessive caution and liability management. Nobody wants to make a mistake because they know they will end up all over KZfaq and probably get their ass sued off. So what you are left with is this comfort-addicted society where everyone moves at a snails pace and avoids quick thinking at all costs. Glad I left the emergency service field.

These Americans firefighters. So proud and so old fashioned. European firefighters can always attack a fire seconds after arriving because a high pressure foamline or waterline is immediately available. Why put a carfire (rubber, oil, plastics) out with water? It's so simple even a child knows that foam is the way to go... Seriously, I could see an American firefighter use water when he's got a pan fire in his own kitchen and stand surprised that his house is on fire the next second.

My only wish as an old firefighter is that younger firefighters would learn there are more and just straight stream in the nozzle!
