At 11:51AM Tuesday, Lehigh County Fire Radio transmitted the box for a structural fire at 3220 Mauch Chunk Road in North Whitehall Township.
Additional information provided to Chief 16 from the fire dispatcher was one caller reporting smoke from the building.
When Chief 16 arrived, he found a 1-story auto repair shop with fire and smoke pushing from the building and struck out the second alarm.
Someone backed a pick-up truck to the overhead doors in the rear and ran inside to save the tool chest. They chained it and used the pick-up to pull it out of the garage before it engulfed in flames.
Volunteers from North Whitehall, Whitehall, South Whitehall and Catasauqua assisted at the fire.

Authority in relation to the authority of this earth. Fire is an example of the God in utilizing the Angels that have been punished and has been reverted to the existence of the fire! Anyone that knows that witch dancing around the fire it causes the metaphysical realm initiate with the fire to represent metaphysical and the physical destruction of living thing to be transferred to the Angels realm. God Provides an Authority for mankind to thrive. Angels have taken all Authority on earth to themselves to recreate or manipulate life in the metaphysical Heavenly Holy realm for their own Right to be God! This was not the intention of The allowance of the Angels yet was upheld by the Authority of God for the Angels themselves would have depleted themselves to maintain the realm by giving themselves to it Authority! God no longer is allowing it to be upheld as the Angels are excepting that they are to return to “Doing the Will of God on the physical and never to Do there own will against God ever again! As humanity is to thrive with the knowledge of the Authority we all have a right to expand our rights to life with the truth as we walk with knowing we are not perfect but in an encouraging our fellowship in the word that we speak to be our right of life or death! Be the image to others as we “ Do will of God” and stand for the preservation reflection of God within Mankind!

Extremely, more then anything else they just wouldn’t put water on the fire, at one point the had left the nozzle to go do something, I know they aren’t refilling on air because they aren’t masked up (which they should be) but it’s like the fires burning the roof off of the place and they just left to go have a pep talk or something? Is it anyone’s place to question what happened, no, because who’s to say what resources/training they had available but still it took way too long for them to get water on the fire. .

The lack of SCBA is my biggest concern especially at an auto shop where yiu have no idea what's burning. This was a total loss before they showed up, and there wasn't much they could do. Obviously a Vollie area as the first due engine showed up with just one guy. Did you see the giant tanker as well? This isn't mid town Manhattan. I'll bet they have limited water supply. I honestly don't see anything really wrong here tactically. The tactical right wall was already breaching when they arrived, you have to watch your collapse zones, so any attack with hand lines through that window is out of the question, which is why the truck spotted where it did. This is completely gone no matter who shows up. Keep it from affecting the exposures and make sure everyone goes home. Not much else to do.

Just a question. As a British firefighter I'm wondering why there always seems to be a very long time before water is turned on. On our appliances we have a couple of hose reals and an 1800ltr tank on board that can issue water within seconds of arrival. This gives another firefighter time to connect to a hydrant. Is there a lack of training or knowledge in the USA to fight/ contain the fire? I'm not being disrespectful but genuinely would like to know!

This is sometimes what happens with volunteer departments. People arrive in their personal vehicles because they are at their full time jobs and its closer to the scene. I remember hearing calls over the radio for no apparatus on scene and having to dispatch my full time engine company to the scene. Lots of mistakes, this is why volunteer departments need to have the same training as full time departments but no one wants to pay for the training.

I come from a small rural department in southwest Missouri and 99% of our volunteers are FF1&2, HAZ-MAT Ops, VRT and either EMR or EMT certified. All of our driver/operators are required to have a certified EVOC and pump operators certs. Hell if our little department can do it anyone can. And we do not allow our personnel to respond directly to the scene in their POV, unless all the apparatus needed is already on scene or in route then the IC can either have them respond with a brush truck or POV. Only our Chief officer are allowed to respond direct on the initial alarm. There is really no excuse for no training other than the officers failing to provide it. The State of Missouri will provide 2 free certified classes per department per year, all of our local departments Chiefs will work out a plan on which department is going to host each class and make a schedule of these classes so they aren't duplicating the class. Then all the departments can attend these free classes. It has worked out great for all of these departments and it really shows on fire scenes. We do 2-3 County wide training classes such as water supply, large scale incidents, interior operations etc. All the departments are universal in our hose sizes and coupling, accountability, radio frequencies, RIT equipment etc. The only thing is our SCBAs, some prefer Scott, some MSA and one has Dragers. And every department except 1 have 4500 psi packs, one department still uses 2216 packs.

As others have mentioned, the lack of using SCBA was terrible. There were surely all kinds of chemicals and poisonous fumes there. And yes, while it did take agonisingly long to get water on the fire, it wouldn't have made much difference. This was a lost cause before they even arrived. It reminds me of a big restaurant fire here in Odessa, Ukraine, some years ago. A beautiful place, mainly constructed from wood (log cabin style) and with thatched roofs. It was the middle of Summer, hot and dry weather. The place was already fully ablaze before they arrived. It burned down to the ground, literally nothing left, but fortunately no injuries. I'd post a link, but KZfaq tends to remove or hide them. Fortunately they were able to rebuild the place, though not in its original style. I hope these people were able to do the same, it must be so horrible to see your business go up in flames :(

If all the firefighters, police and others had worn SCBA during recovery efforts after 9/11, there would have been a lot fewer cancer deaths over the years since. Air contaminants can be insidious. Thanks to all our firefighters, where most have full time jobs and families they leave behind to save a building or what ever it may be, and had to fight through traffic just to get to the fire scene. I was listening to the scanner. There was only one call that came in on this fire and it was made by a passerby. When Bill got to the scene, he called dispatch to confirm fire. Also, they had issues w/water pressure. Yes, I agree they should've worn masks and gloves, should've done some things different, and probably more training. They are our firefighters and there is always room for improvement and I will always support them no matter what. Just my thoughts, no need to reply. Thank you

Did it for 25 years so I know what it take to dedicate time to the fire house. But training, training, training!! Water pressure failures happen! But this fire was more about how the incident was run. Putting the tower up basically for the sake of putting it in service was 100% unnecessary. Nobody was working as a cohesive unit. It was more of a free for all. The guys had the willingness to work but there was no command. It was a freelance job and the guys with the white helmets need to held accountable for that show. They need to watch this (I'm sure they did) and go over it step by step. This video can be used as a drill by Whitehall and other departments..

Yeah that's the thing, early in the video it was just a little fire, probably started by solvent soaked rags/spontaneous combustion, but by the time the FD actually gets there the whole place is on fire and by then you KNOW it's a total loss and it looks like they knew it too. It was a cheaply constructed concrete block building of low value and they were not going to do much more than just enough to keep it from spreading. Before the video here the owner saved a chest of tools by backing his truck up and dragging it out, what I dont get is at that point why didnt he grab a fire extinguisher FIRST!!! A news report said the owner usually brings his dog to the shop but didnt this time!

The very first mistake is when the tower passed the engine in the street and became the initial attack apparatus. Most ladders only carry 300-500 gallons on average, so it usually only take a couple of minutes to blow through that! If they had pulled the engine in first at least they'd have had probably 750-1000 gallons to use while the 2nd due secured a water supply.

Ok folks. Manpower in volunteer departments is at a minimal level. Those who dedicate themselves to helping others, should be commended. This fire had “cooked” EVERYTHING inside prior to arrival to the first piece of apparatus. Even prior to it’s “breakout”. Now, jump of the “first due”, stretch LDH (large diameter hose) by hand, stretch hand lines, and place the pump in gear, charge those lines, all by yourself. If you can’t do this then you need help. My point is, please volunteer with your local volunteer fire department. Please be part of the solution, help your community, become engaged. You will find criticism will be reduced.

You obviously don't live in rural America! I'm an asst. chief in a volunteer FD in a small Pennsylvania town of 200 people. We rely on numerous fund raisers throughout the year to make our money. We have a large coverage area, with 2/3 of it forest lands. Our fire tax earnings barely covers our insurance costs. So paying fire fighters to help coverage just isn't practical. The next two nearest FD, also volunteer, are 10 and 12 miles away. The county we serve in is the same size as the state of Rhode Island , and it's all volunteer.

I stuck around first volunteer units arrived I even helped set ladders hook up a line to a hydrant maybe 5 minutes later more showed up and they really went to work on that house fire I was impressed. In a rural area our volunteer fire departments are social centers too, fish dinners, gun raffles, festivals etc. serve more to the community than just fire fighting. I donate each year to the volunteer department servicing my area. They also bring the trucks out for the kids at Halloween and Christmas again another thing they do that does not involve fires.

The window on the side we can see fails and fire can also be seen venting from the main doors long before the first apparatus arrives. You can believe what you’d like, but the building is heavily involved, well beyond the capabilities of 1 3/4 lines. Also, at no point does the FD do any form of ventilation that would have let air affect the fire.

I've been in this situation as a VFD Chief. It's one of your friend's or neighbors buildings and livelihood that is doomed on arrival. In the heat of the moment, we sometimes get so much adrenaline flowing we forget standard SOP's. In a perfect world, the fire would have put itself out. But in this case it's a 50 year old building and everything in it is soaked with decades of chemicals and motor oil. It was a loss upon arrival. But volunteers took time out of their lives to do what they could to save a neighbor's livelihood. Give these guys a break with the nasty comments. They are our brothers.

It's not about the guys doing their best. It's about the lack of training that is widespread in America. They put more energy in adding lights to trucks then do basic training like mask on. There is no coordination in wich team goes for the first attack. The volunteers don't have the equipment to be ready as soon as the firetruck arrives. It's all lack of eliminating time consuming tasks. And its not only this video that supports this. It's alot. America is far behind Europe on this.

Firefighting is not a place to give guys a break. You want the world to look at you as the super hero's and "save lives everyday" then step up to the plate and learn what comes with that hero worship. The mistakes made at this scene are what COST lives not save lives. Even when a building seems a loss. without putting lives at risk, do your best. As I have said in previous posts, there was a huge lack in Chain of command and crews not following directions. To be totally honest, it starts with poor leadership and goes downhill from there. Maybe some brutally honest comments might wake these guys up before they cost a life, or have to attend court and justify their actions to a judge.

I guess because ladder truck starts putting H2O downstream all other attack stops? There's still interior fire and they are just standing around. For a little bit atleast.

I don’t know much about firefighting, but I was wondering why they wanted to use that so bad while the roof was still intact, and they had hoses at either open end.

You can use the ladder to put out the fire from a high position. But it would have been better to get a second "normal" firetruck instead.

Would love to know what the true time elapse was from dispatch until the first engine arrived. Overall a pretty painful showing by the departments involved.

I'd love to know the same, from first caller to dispatch. From alert to first arriving engine . 🤦‍♂️

6+ minutes till first water, 10 minutes in and no water through the big OPEN WINDOW nearest the truck, with fire pouring out.

Not making excuses, but volunteers who commit to many hours of training, are not as common as they were years ago. Today, everyone wants paid.

Fire videos are really interesting. In almost everyone I watch the fire department seems really laid back and slow.

Definitely a "everyone goes home but the homeowner" moment. I can't tell if they were only trained to Mod 2 or they stick with in house training...
