Hicks and Newt was a Cameron trait of making science fiction. Whilst killing them early might not have been a fitting end. Their presence didn’t fit Alien films or the style of Alien 3. I counter creating a pseudo family was way too much artificial saccharine for a Si-fi horror.

That would be indeed interesting to see a grown up Newt, she could have become another great character on level of Ripley (and think of the possibility of sequels and spin offs ;)) jokes aside, I think that Alien III with live Newt and Hicks would work well, Hicks as military guy would help the prisoners of Fiorina to fight off the alien, Newt would be again anchor to humanity for Ripley and also her final sacrifice would be all the more impactful and poignant if there were characters for whom she cared about and cared for her to witness it, even bigger emotional (plus it would only strengthen her resolve).

There’s a graphic novel where she survives and joins hicks afterwards ‘Aliens Book One’ 🥰🥰

She was just a plot device in Aliens. Hudson or Vasquez were more developed, likeable characters and they were killed off too.

She was a bland character/plot device in a franchise whose themes revolve around rape, murder and parasitisation..folk honestly thought it would be a happy ever after for them? Aliens did the beast an even bigger disservice by devolving its complete alienness- from near-unstoppable lovecraftian horror..to a simple ant archetype monster that can be smushed by simple guns. Hicks and Newts deaths were meant to shock, confuse and devastate you- it seems it worked too well in eliciting the emotional response they were going for. People die- it’s not always glorious, or announced. The really funny thing is that folk knew Hicks and Newt weren’t coming back long before the film was coming out through media like Fangoria- it baffles me that people would be so surprised that they would not live. It’s tragic that no one has the balls to make something original like these three films did back in the day- it’s always got to be the same ole retread/retcon/nostalgiabait/mincemeat- I do however wonder which alternate script for 3 will get a comic adaption next though? *prays for Vincent Ward’s Wooden Planet*

@@pinkacid The thing about sequels is that they should expand upon the themes of the previous movies and introduce new ones. Aliens does an amazing job at this by bringing in themes of motherhood and facing your fears. These themes are integral to the narrative of Aliens, and Alien 3 killing everyone off in the beginning for no reason just ruins everything. Before, Aliens was about having courage, but after Alien 3's opening, the message becomes "Ripley should have chickened out and left Newt to die, because the net benefit would have been better for everyone." That's stupid as hell. It'd be more forgivable if their deaths were used to introduce interesting new themes into Alien 3, but Alien 3's plot is so devoid of creativity that it just retreads the same themes as the previous two movies but with much poorer execution. The fact that multiple plot holes in the opening (not even counting how the egg got on board) were required to kill off Hicks and Newt in the opening just further goes to show how poorly made the plot of the movie was. As for Aliens "turning the beast into an ant", I disagree. If anything, Aliens just makes the xenomorph scarier. It shows that even with guns, the aliens will eventually overwhelm you. Aliens also shows us the planet destroying potential of the xenomorph, and how quickly they can multiply and take over a world. On top of that, Aliens also suggests that the xenomorphs possess some form of intelligence, as they knew to cut the power before attacking the protagonists. I'd also like to note that the Alien franchise is supposed to be relatively grounded and realistic (part of the reason I like its depiction of the future so much), and that it wouldn't be particularly realistic for the aliens to be immune to gunfire. Given the size of a xenomorph, and the fact that the marines were using explosive tipped rounds, it would be unrealistic for that to not have any effect on the aliens.

The_Dook The other thing about sequels is not retreading the same ground- 1 was about discovering the worst of the unknown. 2 was about the themes of motherhood and facing your fears. 3 was about accepting the fragility and inevitably of your own mortality, while refusing to give in, even in death. Of course there is plot-holes in 3- there was a crap ton in 2 too. (No one finding Ripley’s ship for 57 years and it remaining functional with her being alive) (Newt being able to evade the beasts for an absurd amount of time, I’m calling bs on that one- it’s impossible) (The inconsistent strengths of the Aliens- being able to snag marines off the ground like flies, to being helpless against a boot to the head) (Ripley being able to get into the hive with little to no trouble, save Newt, burn it down AND still have time to get back out, while also including the time it took for the Queen to come on up the lift) They made the Aliens mortal, far too mortal- explosive tipped armour piercing rounds or not- they dropped like flies, adding more of them would’ve been terrifying if they actually made you feel like Ripley, Hicks or Newt were ever in any danger throughout the film. The thing is, everyone was expecting Aliens 2, they didn’t get that, and even if this film hadn’t went through the hell it had and turned out as Fincher intended without interference from the studio- it was doomed to be hated. Had the Assembly Cut or even better, if the meddling bastards had let Fincher do the film he wanted- there could’ve been a slim chance of it being accepted better- instead of being the black sheep that is only now getting the recognition it actually deserves.

@@pinkacid If I remember correctly, Ripley isn't faced with the fact that she's going to die until almost the end of the movie, and even then doesn't she get over her mortality pretty quickly? Doesn't she ask what's his name to kill her in literally the next scene? If it can happen that late and that quickly in the movie, couldn't you say Gorman and Vasquez had to accept their mortality as well? I could be wrong here though, I haven't watched Alien 3 in a while. Also, isn't accepting you're going to die kind of like facing your fears lol. As for the plot holes for Aliens you listed, many of them are not plot holes at all. -Ripley's ship easily could have gotten lost in space. It's an endless expanse of nothing. Ripley even says she'll be lucky if she gets picked up at the end of Alien. -Newt begin able to evade the Aliens is explained in the movie itself (provided you're watching the director's cut). Newt says that she's able to crawl into the smaller vents that even other kids her age weren't able to fit in. -You might have a point with the boot, although it was a confined space in that vent and the xenomorph Vasquez was fighting probably didn't have the most mobility. -There are several explanations for why Ripley was able to waltz into the hive. First off, the sentry guns probably killed a ton of xenomorphs, and some of the surviving ones may still be in the colony complex. The one's in the hive probably guarded the queen. Also, the would the xenomorphs really need to attack someone who is literally walking right into the place where they keep the facehuggers? They probably figured Ripley would get infected without any intervention since she was just walking in. They really only started attacking the marines earlier in the movie because they torched that one chestburster. Also, what do you mean Ripley is never in danger? The entire movie she's in danger. The scene with the facehuggers in the med lab is way closer than she's ever been before to dying. The scene where her and Hicks are trying to get Newt while there's a huge mass of motion moving towards them on the tracker is also great. Speaking of not being in danger, Ripley is completely immune to being killed by the runner alien during the climax of Alien 3. At what's supposed to be the most exciting part of the movie, the protagonist can't be hurt by the main antagonist. Amazing.

I've decided not to treat the A3 film as canon because I refuse to let an overproduced/underwritten clusterfuck cash-grab get in the way of the 2nd movie's themes. The second movie is a masterpiece. Throwing every hopeful theme of the second movie out the window before the opening credits are even finished is just sloppy. If I had faith that it was an actual cynical narrative choice, rather than a result of the film's notoriously troubled production, that would be one thing. But, I don't. Other folks can view it as canon if they like, but I choose Gibson.

Yep. I remember watching the start of Alien 3 and once it was confirmed that Newt and Hicks were dead I totally lost interest. It cheapened the whole Aliens story.

​@@GingerBallSack As much as I dislike A3 and would celebrate a film that retconned it, I'd definitely have to be more against the it-was-all-a-dream idea, because it's (as Gumball Watterson once said) one of the worst plot twists humanity has ever conceived for their stories. I'd say simply establish an alternate continuity which diverges after the ending of 'Aliens', as I love multiple continuities, or say that Newt was saved and replaced with an imposter like Hicks was in the 'Aliens: Colonial Marines' game (maybe another child who'd been put through plastic surgery to look like Newt before the switch, or a twin sister her parents gave up).

As for how to retcon Ripley, Newt and Hicks' deaths if you prefer a single continuity over establishing an alternate, there's the stuff I mentioned above for bringing back Newt and Hicks - as for Ripley, they could claim a clone infected with Xenomorph DNA that retains the original's memories and personalities was created, like the Ripley 8 clone in 'Alien Resurrection' except it genuinely believes it's the original; or they could say the Ripley in A3 was the super-advanced clone and the original Ripley was kidnapped between 'Aliens' and A3. I have to disagree with you about the dream idea being an acceptable method - there are people out there who do like A3 and would be very upset if it received the awful it-was-all-a-dream retcon, and I really think the alternate-continuity idea is more acceptable and that it can work without the prejudice of it ruining a franchise coming true. Most people love multiple worlds and multiverse, and even more people hate it-was-all-just-a-dream. I don't think each franchise has to have one unified, monopolistic/absolutist continuity.

A zenomorph, emerges from behind some equipment and stretches its limbs and mouthparts. Looking to the right. It hears a sound and rotates and swiftly becomes a blur of motion, heading to the left... POV Change: A Yautja warrior steps out from a small transport pod, just landed outside a prefabricated colonial building. It checks it's wrist tech and stiffens. Something is detected! The thin plastic double doors of the barnlike prefab are suddenly burst apart by the young zenomorph as it hurtles towards its victim. The Yautja's shoulder cannon, already aimed at the double doors, makes the slightest arc of target correction and spits out a plasma bolt, neatly destroying the zenomorph's head. The alien's exoskeleton collapses, it's inertia bringing it to the Yautja's booted feet. Obviously, a trophy is not this Yautja's intention. After another look at the wrist tech, the Yautja places it's hands on it's fearsome facemask and unclamps it with a wrenching movement, revealing... Ripley! :)

Alien 3 definitely was one of the worst Alien movies, although to be fair, everything after Aliens has been arguably bad. Thought 3 was the worst one, then Resurrection came. Then Prometheus came. Then Covenant came.

Alien 3 is definitely not the worst one. It is a great film in its own way. It has aged really well over time. The bleakness of it is what makes it so great. Sometimes stories do not always have storybook endings and that’s ok. The series was about Ripley not Newt and Hicks.

@@themcadamsminute8494 The bleakness of it wasn't the problem; it was the writing, pacing, delivery, direction, story-elements...the *entire* narrative structure and vision was an incoherent, unfocused mediocrity delivered in the blandest way imaginable (which makes perfect sense considering how many times the original script was thrown out the window and how low the production cost was). I'd argue that Prometheus is a better Alien movie than 3 despite how much hate Prometheus gets, because while that movie had a heck ton of flaws, it also had a vision and succeeded in delivering it far better "objectively" than 3, with a superior script and narrative direction to fall back on. That officially leaves Resurrection, Covenant, and Alien 3 as the 3 worst Alien movies, in no particular order, because all their scripts have aged really BAD over time.

The problem with alien 3 was that Fincher didn’t get to make the film his way. I think the concept is really intriguing - Aliens had a squad of marines virtually wiped out - how would a colony of defenceless prisoners be able to do against the alien? And how would Ripley survive in such a place where humans are just as monstrous? Pity the editing of the theatrical cut was poor.

I think her death makes Alien 3 that much more of a powerful film. I truly enjoy the film. It was a great ending to the Ripley saga. Sometimes stories do not have always storybook endings.

But as clones they don't remember anything of the events that took place in the alien3 movie. When they arrive at the colonists destinyplanet,the xenomorph starts to lay eggs. Then all humans on the planets are attacked and a war breaks out.Ripley,Hicks and Newt manages to escape in a spaceship they find in a cave. It is a engineer spaceship that takes them to the engineers homeplanet called"Paradise".But when they have left the spaceship,a deacon crawls out and makes a cliffhanger for a followup movie 😀
