When I started out as a student teacher, I could barely read some of my students’ handwriting. Let’s be honest, some of it was hieroglyphic scribbles. It became easier very quickly. So, my somewhat educated guess is that, as any task, it becomes easier with time. But a new handwriting is still a new challenge. 😁

Excellent video. I’m pretty good at calculus I and II, but I don’t think I ever would have been able to make sense of Newton’s writings. I taught myself calculus when in my 40s and I was always amazed by the fact that the slope of the tangent line is the inverse operation of the area under the curve. That seems utterly non-intuitive to me. When I studied calculus, the most interesting phrase I came across was an objection to the use of infinitesimals and simply canceling them, since they’re “close to zero.” The quote from Berkeley was, “And what are these Fluxions? The Velocities of evanescent Increments? And what are these same evanescent Increments? They are neither finite Quantities nor Quantities infinitely small, nor yet nothing. May we not call them the ghosts of departed quantities?” Of course the “delta-epsilon” proof proves their legitimacy. I like to think of diminishing terms as ghosts of departed quantities. If a series of ever decreasing terms converges, they rest In peace, but if the series diverges, they come back to haunt us. Thanks for the video.

I actually studied the principia during this lock down!! i never got through the whole of it but I started studying other areas of science and then got enrolled on a science college course since!!! I passed Calculus back in college but I never mastered the material. I was successful at using the formulas and plugging in the numbers to get the same results as the work books, but never got the concepts behind it. In the quarantine, I've tried to learn the concepts of Calculus and is just so freaking hard. The idea of Newton coming up with Calculus as a 23 years old bored young man in a quarantine 350 years ago is mind blowing.

The genius of Newton is incomparable. Most science is furthered by people on the backs of giants. But for Newton there was no giants to piggyback. How he worked out his theories from scratch is mind blowing. What a mind!

Very cool! I teach and tutor calc-based physics so I loved watching this, thank you. Maybe I'll incorporate this as a lesson with newton's original notation before teaching the current limit definition of the derivative, that would be fun and probably give motivation to the students!
