It's great to see young riders blown away by the electric bikes, it will spread the word and encourage further people to move to these bikes or at least consider electric as an option.

One of the weird things for me riding electric was the sounds missing. I really did rely on the pitch of the engine to know how fast I was going in whatever gear. I had no idea I did this until that sound was missing. I had to re-learn how to gauge velocity, and to do it correctly this time. You know, with my eyes.

I finally got to test ride a Ribelle RS on Saturday at Cal Moto Livermore. Wow.... holy speed batman. What an amazing bike. I may... just MAYBE might be sold on one.

Judging speed by the gear and revs is definitely something I do, like puting it in the right gear for the corner just at the right moment helps set the bike up for the corner adding to the control and setting the speed. However with engine braking set up on the electric and some practice listening to the revs of the motor I think it could be just as possible to do the same thing. Looked like a fantastic fun day out!

I've never seen anyone take a ride on an electric without returning with a smile. The faster charge times and longer ranges are starting to grab attention.

So stoked to see you two out there enjoying your bikes and honing your skills! The first time I was able to scrub in my entire rear tire I was stoked too, however it's actually better to try to use as little of your tire as possible. Proper body position will allow you to go through a corner just as fast wail leaning the bike over less, then you can also lean the bike over more and go even faster.

It will be interesting to see how charging at tracks ends up shaking out over time. In the US it is rather common to see RV charging hookups in track paddocks, which are usually like a 24 amp level 2 or thereabouts . . . which is convenient when I bring the Brammo to the track, but there probably won't be any DC fast charging to be found anywhere.

Hi Sam, to answer your question about entry speed, the logical thing to do is check your entry speed on the speedo, not the best as you are forced to look down, but since you have only one gear ratio, the speed to the engine (RPM) is always related (with the same ratio) to the speed (kph), with gears with multi ratios, the calculation is still possible, but you add different ratios. If you think about it the concept of "going in" in third gear at 6000 rpm, translate to go in in third gear at (lets assume) 150kph. With the enegica, everything goes down to just find the right entry speed, and skip all the gear / rpm, In my opinion is harder to get it right, but once you do, is easier to keep it going, and you can concentrate on other thing rather than using brain power figuring out the gears changes.

I don't think I judge cornering speed on my ICE bike by the sound because of gears and different corners are different speeds, but I do find that on the highway it's REALLY hard to keep an even speed on my Zero without constantly checking the speedometer. On the ICE bike I can feel the frequency of the vibration and go for quite a while without checking the speedo. I wish the Zero had cruise control or some way to add it.

Great videos of the Energica, I love the machine, beautifull made product! and I was considering of buying on , but the weight and price new, kills it for me . A second hand older model are more heavy too. 286KG!!! and less battery capacity. That is 100KG heavier and double the price then a Monster SP wet... You can't compensate that with torque. On the straight maybe, but in cornering through twisties with such heavy bike, sorry, sucks. It spoils all the fun. And where i live there are almost only twistie roads. Still a wonderfull machine, new types still weights 260 kg. and +30000€. If they get near 220kg, i could live with that. I looked at a Zero FXS to, thats a lightweight machine but range is +/-100 km, and no fast charging, 1.3 hour...come on dudes! probably a great commtuter bike, but i wanna do more with it.

I think track riding/riding in general is all about what you are used to. Ultimately you should always be slowly getting faster, so getting on an electric, you should drop right back and re learn what to expect. I would argue a combustion engine is ultimately more challenging than a useful marker. Worrying about how quickly you are smashing down gears while trying to pull a handful of brakes, and then hoping you are in the right gear to rip out of the corner is way more hassle then twist off, twist on to go. And additionally, once you get to a certain level, its all about braking markers. Picking which point in the track you go from full throttle to braking hard.

When I finally get my Ford F150 Lightning hopefully within the next year, I'll probably buy a mobile CCS charger to go with it. Won't be cheap but it beats the 3kW AC limit we have on our Energicas!

Using gear & engine sound is definitely a "thing", but not really the correct thing, more of a crutch. You should really be identifying and tweaking reference points to find your way around the track - I start braking at the third cone, I turn in where the fence starts, I track out to where the curb ends, etc. Sound isn't needed to go fast around a track.

The thing about not hearing what your engine is doing: I put carbon pipes on my Monster so I could hear what the engine was up to, so I could get gear selection right - is it pinking/lazy, is it over-revving, am I leaving the clutch open for too long? etc. That worked. Now my bike is silent (electric) but I don't have gears or clutch to optimise the use of, so it's not longer relevant. I can just concentrate on brakes and steering around a bend - happy days! So glad you asked those petrol riders what they thought of your bikes compared to ice - that was something I was wondering the whole time. Also, do you know how your bikes compared on the straights and corners? I'm imaging the extra weight generally meant the corners would be taken a bit more slowly than an ice bike, but you'd more than make up for it on the acceleration out of bends and less time to get to bigger speeds on the straights? You need to ask that guy with the electric plane you went in how he lobbied the local council to pay for a fast charger at Wellington airport, so you can do the same for a fast charger in the pits!

I used engine rev noise / gears only to make sure that I stay in the max torque band of the engine. With electric bikes you can fully enjoy / focus on the bends.

Great video, your the first to be putting EV bikes through what they should be doing as well as roads. You ask what about the lack of noise? Ive done 50 years of ICE riding, 10 in the Isle of Man on Suzuki GSXR 1000 K5, Ive done some short circuit and I run big V twins and classics plus now Ive racked up 12,000 UK miles Riding Zero SRF:- 1) I choose a different helmet Im after no wind noise also if your in a pack with other bikes with noisy pipes you miss out. I find I listen to the motor noise, belt noise, and can hear the tyres working, this is a whole new world but ends up being solo as Ive no other EV bike mates so far, and ICE too noisy! 2) Regen you can hear the level perfectly mainly in the belt working, you back it off the power gradually into corner then transition to power on early, you can do it as electric is so predictable for me Ive developed a new way of riding to have the bike neutrally coasting mid corner, feels like a 2 stroke mid corner and big V twin going in/out. For me I love the noise, I get board easy so learning new stuff is good for me.

Dutch energica group takes portable DC chargers on track days. You would need a proper outlet for it still but might be a solution.

I know it's a minor thing, but I'd love to see some more info about the energicases. I'm hoping to get an SS9 later this year and would love to know how well those work and how they might compare to 3rd party options.

I guess this was not the first day on the track for you, how was your time? And how did it go against the previous bike? Last week I demo ride the Energica Ribelle 2021, I never rode a proper sport bike so it was a new experience under that light. I followed a test-guide to try the various performance modes on the streets on the outskirts of Milan (namely: standard, sport and the difference between low and high regen), getting familiar with the behaviour and when the lead started to push on the highway, he took me by surprise and I couldn't keep up with the speed. I managed to do that on the way back, at least. :P I really loved the bike response, I wasn't comfortable with the riding position at the beginning, being used to a Low Rider S with forward controls, I especially appreciated the suspensions and general handling. I loved every moment. Except the noise, the Energica is "jerky" compared to the Livewire, which is by far the best electric motor sound. Talking about familiar experiences, I see a clip with a V-Twin at 2:16, I wonder how that felt on the track. :D Sadly a new bike doesn't make sense on a financial level (30 k €), but I'll get the demo ride for 18 000 € (it was 15k before... they silently increased the price but is still a good one). But it won't be available until September, basically the end of the season. I'll get the bike for autumn, just like you but on the other hemisphere.

Sam - do you trail-brake in corners? What regen setting were you on while on the track? I am yet to take my Ribelle to the track, but on more spirited rides in the twisties I go low regen so I can trail brake a touch and load the front tire before tip in. Very curious to hear how you approach trail braking on an electric bike. Thank you!!!

I've always done it by how fast the corner is coming, even on a gas bike and I don't even ride track .... Incidentally, 25 minutes to 80% I find my Ribelle charges a little faster than advertised (while green), wondering if you've seen similar.

Either of the bikes get into the yellow or red because of heat?

Otherwise, just get a professional racer to come along to a track day and pay for that...might be worth getting a few people together and cover the Sensei costs. As for noise, each different bike we own or ride has different characteristics. Your brain is just associating feelings, noise, sightings, perceptions with each machine. So this is just a different one, much like a heavier vs lighter bike, or a 2smoke vs 4stroke.

Interesting vid and thanks for making it and I subscribed to your channel. Have you quantified how much power you lose for a certain reduction in battery level? Most electric vehicles suffer from reduced performance with lower charge level but curious how bad it impacts the Ribelle. For comparison my Tesla drops off very little from 100% to 75%. To quantify this from 0-60 mph, it might run 3.7 full charged and still do 3.8 when at 75%. Then it slows up by about .1 seconds from 74-50%, another .1 from 49-25% and then starts to really drop off below 15%. There is a bigger difference though at higher speeds (over 60 mph) and it shows up in the trap speed in the 1/4 mile. From fully charged it is about 117 mph to 10% it is down to about 106 mph. With lithium ion batteries you never really want to charge to 100% more than necessary as it impacts battery degradation pretty significantly. I am sure Energica is not immune to this as I am pretty sure they use Li-ion batteries.

In five years or so, the electric motorcycles will make ICE look a bit silly, me thinks. Ahead of the curve NZL!

As a gamer most of the racing games I play I rarely use manual shifting (every "pro racing gamer" may now proceed to disregard everything I say of course) which I will heavily guess automatic is similar to gearless electric motorcycles in a massive over simplification. I too also use depth and courage to judge my turns (probably a lot less courage because I don't have to worry in a game,) but I also tend to judge turns by speed. Some turns I tend go into at 40mph (rougly 64.3kph,) some at 60 (96.5kph,) while others flat out, depending on the vehicle, the track condition (and the varying physics from one game to another) to get optimal lines. But man the hairpin line on the track map does not look intuitive to me. my novice gaming brain says taking a turn that sharp seems like you're wasting momentum so you take longer getting up to speed on the straight. I'd assume the geared bikes are still in a lower gear at the "Splash" and aren't worried about losing time on the hairpin because they're already slowed down significantly and will need build RPM again anyway.

BTW, did you notice Rich Rebuilds dropped an Autozam video about an hour after this one.

I''m really bummed that during my time as a racetrack instructor I never had the chance to use an EV bike on a track. For the rider's question about how to judge entry speed without sound, gears etc. those things just become muscle memory. Adjusting to none of that would be easy. But scary because regen would be a whole new experience. So hard braking would be more severe 'I think'
