Raul Vega (Adam Rodriguez) lies on the brink of death as his brother Mateo (Johnathan Nieves) meets the charismatic Pachuco Fly Rico (Sebastian Chacon). Tiago and Lewis's investigation leads them to the temple of the radio evangelist, Sister Molly Finnister (Kerry Bishé) and her formidable mother, Miss Adelaide (Amy Madigan). Councilman Townsend (Michael Gladis) and his cunning assistant Alex capitalize on the discord in the city to further their political goals. Peter Craft (Rory Kinnear) has a chance encounter with Elsa at the beach and his sons meet her unnerving boy, Frank (Santino Barnard). Lewis and his old friends investigate clandestine Third Reich activities. Starring Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, and Nathan Lane.

1938 Los Angeles is a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. Just finished watching the first episode. Just wanna say brilliant acting and cinematography just name it City of Angels and remove Penny Dreadful from the title.

@@jasonmoise3586 Agreed. Penny dreadfuls were cheap popular serial literature produced during the nineteenth century. The penny dreadfuls were also represented by various book series like The Penny Library of Famous Books launched in 1896

Nathan Lane is a star. This is a great spin-off. It's not meant to be the original Penny Dreadful. I appreciate the fresh new plot and the incredible acting by the cast. Awesome detective story mixed with the supernatural, though we do need more of the supernatural elements but maybe in later episodes.

Achei totalmente forçado o momento em que ele matou o irmão....desnecessário total...podia ter dado um tiro na mão do cara...no ombro....mas um tiro na cabeça do próprio irmão só pra cumprir a profecia....matava qualquer um e colocava alguém comentando que era um caso em que irmãos se matavam e que isso tinha relação com aprofecia...quem mata o próprio irmão pra salvar um colega de trabalho...forçado! nem se o irmão fosse um bandido...o que passava longe...afff .... isso é só recurso de narrativa pra trazer drama, densidade e complexidade pro personagem "herói" do protagonista....tomara que melhore....to torcendo pra melhorar....🙏🙏🙏

First episode was OK, but it's not the Penny Dreadful of old. What really bothered me though were the cringeworthy attempts by Natalie Dormer and Rory Kinnear at emulating a German accent.

Exactly! Glad to see I'm not the only one thinking so. The "Penny Dreadful" name is just added as brand recognition. Nothing more. It has nothing in common with the original series.

I've read some reviews were critics were given the first six episodes to see...and oh boy, it won't get any better from now on. Actually if anything, most seemed to agree that the show gets even worse and even more scattered...

@@abcun17 Yes, everything that will happen in the next five will be very mediocre, plots without much sense that does not arouse interest in the audience. The political stuff will be repetitive, the main romance between Sister Molly and Tiago cheesy and predictable, the Vega´s family plot is practically what you see in the promos (The mother in her bond with Santa Muerte, the sister with her paranoia...pfff idem of idem) i think people are going to get bored, this is not like the first PD in which each episode was a challenge and even each phrase of each character. City of Angels is only positively valued by the Latin people I assume, and by those who value that mythology, personally I do not like anything about the Mexican, nor do I have anything to do with it, and i don´t have anything against it, but i preffer the Victorian; is the most disturbing, attractive and delicate, the of higher quality. Maybe if another kind of writer would have treated the mexican myths, but Logan just ruined it, at last the representation here sucks. The first Penny Dreadful is a haute cuisine dish, City of Angels is a cheap burger fried in a seedy street stall by a greasy third-world vendor and full of parasites.

@@abcun17 I've read some really good reviews. Like everything else in entertainment, it is subjective. I watched the first episode and found the acting and the exposition for what is to come to be intriguing.

@@susanobisedona Of course. I am sure there are critics and people who like this show. I have absolutely no issue with that. We all like what we like. I think that had they decided to make this show stand on it's own, cut the "Penny Dreadful" name out if it, and really streamlined the number of characters, the number of storylines, had better writing, directing, casting (well part of the cast anyways) production values and special effects, then maybe this could have bee interesting. Such as it is, to me at least, it looks like a convoluted mess. But as I've said, that is just me. I do however take some issue with people, critics or otherwise, who say that this is better than the original series. I mean really, if you think about it, this is quite similar to HBO's "Carnivale". And that show was way better, in my opinion. PS The upcoming HBO miniseries "Perry Mason" is set in roughly the same time period, and looks more interesting. See the link below. @@ShadowSonic2 the main of us are dissapointed with this new show. I miss the greatness from the original, and this fact is nothing to do with the differents eras, but with the writting. But this won´t be a major issue for me. The show is done, and with it my arguments. I will let it for the real fans of it. If you disagree in the current social media you just will get a good ration of insults like "hater" "shut up" "fuck off" and your sin? That you don´t like the new show. That´s all, Mr. Jocks, XD that´s the problem.

@@ShadowSonic2 I agree it's the writing of the entire show.. The original PD is one of those tv series that does not need a spinoff. The original was well written, the acting was superb, and the whole thing was a masterpiece. In my opinion, this series will not do justice to those of us who loved PD... And if I offend anyone in saying this show is pitiful... Well, I apologize and get over it. It isn't the end of World

The casting is terrible, if you cast someone english to play a german character or someone from Costa Rica or Puerto Rico to play a character from México it shows and doesn’t allow the audience to get into the story.

Dreadful first episode. This show is shaky as hell, from the cheap production values, the sloppy special effects, the mediocre cast and even more mediocre accompanying level of acting. The only few plusses are Natalie Dormer, who is pretty much good and solid in anything she stars in, Rory Kinnear and Nathan Lane who try their best with the low quality writing and scripts they are given. And then there is Santa Muerte played by the achingly beautiful Lorenza Izzo...who for me is probably the most intriguing and fascinating character so far.

Cheap production values? This series was filmed on a set that was BUILT for the period, along with period costumes and props. This isn't a sound stage recreation. it lives and breathes the 30s.

@@ShadowSonic2 No I''ll call cheap a poorly built one regardless of the time period. Same for the special effects. Look at "The Plot Against America" , set only a few years later than this show. And then tell me about the differences. Take a look at the trailer for "Perry Mason" and get the actual feel and look of LA in the opening decades of the 20th century. Hell the second season of "Agent Carter", also set in LA, had better sets and locations than this series...

I absolutely loved the original series. This unfortunately, is horribly disappointing. A waste of Dormer, Lane, Kinnear and Barraza. Writing is trash, subject matter is hamfisted and half-assed. Horrible German accents, who coached this?! A wasted attempt at being inclusive and capturing an important and serious period. This shit was cooked up in someone's tone deaf boardroom and they should be ashamed of themselves. THIS IS NOT PENNY DREADFUL!
