Looking forward to following this Pick n Place project.......quite an objective! I think the software would get quite complex so maybe better to use existing open source software.

Cool and very intimidating project, like it :) Please google for Marlin pick and place as an alternative option, don't know how useable it is, but i think it could be advantageous to reuse existing motion control code instead of writing your own? Anyway, have fun! :)

For open source pick and place software, look at OpenPnP (openpnp.org/). I think they have it working with a number of open source and other hardware machines and it is currently under active development. On the other hand, doing the software yourself would be more interesting, both for you and for us. For the movement, I think more speed is needed for pick and place than for 3D printing or CNC milling so you might want to consider using servo motors and drivers instead of steppers. I believe these can more easily be made to go fast enough than steppers for a point-to-point application like pick and place. Also, driving servo motors would be an interesting topic for videos. Anyway, this looks to be a really good project from you, whichever way you go.

I think you should finish up on the PSU first. This looks like an awesome project but it is probably going to take a very long time to accomplish.
