Hi Hubnut I just bought one of these cost me £30 for the same unit that currently costs £85 in Halfords it's brand new as well. It works better and more clearly than the factory fitted in my Ford Fiesta.i hope it continues to do so. I also salute your integrity on giving your honest opinion.

After recently using a loan car with DAB radio which was brilliant in my area... I was going to buy the product but your honest review has made me rethink the whole DAB thing...my phone charging also affects my car radio...and its a genuine Belkin product..

I have the old (about 10 years old) Pure Highway in my car with an external Kinetic aerial and it's superb. Earlier this year, I bought a pure Highway 600 in my Missus's car and like the Nextbase, it's pretty rubbish, possibly because of the screen mount antenna. I'd recommend you seek out one of the old Pure Highways, fit a magnetic aerial on the roof and have your car full of the wonderful sounds of 6Music wherever you roam. Keep up the superb work!

Also, in general; The 3 dollar FM transmitters that they well on eBay actually work really well. They don't do DAB or Bluetooth but if you want to connect anything to any radio (walkmans, phones, mp3 players, laptops, whatever) they'll do a marvellous job, not sounding too shabby in the process either. Definitely much better than those adapter cassettes.

Hi Hub, great video as always, I have a dab head unit and being in the darkest depths of Cornwall, it works quite well 90% of the time, why don’t you get a external Ariel for a tenner. Works a lot better. For the Bt I have no comments for that, but my same head unit works fine.

Finally, someone who sacrifices a blanking plate rather than make a hole in the dash. I hate it when installers drill a hole, when they could just use a switch blank instead. Makes much more sense.

can't live without DAB in the car - have had built in DAB for over 3 cars and 9 years and am amazed how poor reception remains. The signal in rural areas is awful. Wales, Cumbria, Scottish lowlands, rural Dorset I have tried in all these areas but in urban areas the coverage is fine.

The reason DAB reception is "terrible" is because it is a digital signal which is either on or off. There is no in between like you get on analogue signals like FM. It's the same with sky TV, freeview, DAB, the internet and anything else that transmits a digital signal. The upsides are that it uses less bandwidth so is cheaper and easier to make more widely available but the downside is that the cut off point for reception is much more abrupt and weather affected.

I'm glad you did the review and gave a honest opinion. Not going to be buying this at all now...

Part of the problem with reception is that nearly all the manufacturers that sell the adpapter kits or after market radios just supply the windscreen mount antenna which is useless even in strong signal areas. I never bothered with the windscreen mount antenna on my Pure unit and opted for a mag mount antenna instead which works alot better.

Did you give Nextbase your feedback? I'm sure that they would be interested in what you have to say. Maybe you should do a follow up video once you've used it more.

I've got a Pure Highway DAB and it's signal is affected by my in car phone charger. The signal quality in rural areas is poor compared to cars I've driven with factory fitted DAB. I'm not convinced any of these aftermarket units are that great.

In my experience most of the charging adapters create interference to the radio - it happens in my standart modern car - while charging the phone, the radio reception is shite. That's why I bought an USB port-equipped radio to my 2CV. The USB port does not only serve to provide music from a pendrive, but also charges me phone without an intereference. (to be honest I dont listen to radio much as I have a specific taste and I do not like interuppting advertisement)

Why do all the manufacturers insist on supplying these pointless antenna's? A few years ago I spent £150ish on a JVC DAB head unit and after arseing about with the windscreen aerial, I concluded that if I wanted any sort of DAB reception, I'd have to pay another £50 on an amplified Kinetic aerial. The whole thing was a ballache to fit, so when I sold the car I left it all in. I've now paid £15 for a cheap Bush pocket DAB radio from Argos that plugs into my aux socket. I get perfectly good DAB eeception 95% time with no aerial. Yet all these add-on and built in units are crap with the windscreen aerial and only as good if you spend upwards of £50 on an external aerial. Madness

Bought a £30 alba personal dab player and dropped it in my new daily (gave my company Audi back and missed dab). It has a 9 hour battery live before it needs a charge.

With DAB its always best to get one of the small internal aerials, Had a couple with the windscreen stick on aerial and were pants. Converted to the other DAB aerial and all fine. Also is there a 2.5mm jack socket for an external mike. Also makes a world of difference if it does. Also as its bluetooth, you should be able to play music from your phone via the interface to the radio.

The G1W dashcam that Techmoan reviewed (theré's links under his review) is actually really, really good and dirt cheap. I'm waiting for mine to die but it just won't. It's been going for years. Battery's obviously almost dead but who cares about those. Alternatively, the Viofo A119 is a really nice dash cam for the money. You may want to look at that one too.

I'm thinking of buying a DAB car stereo the problem is it doesn't come with an antenna..can you recommend a cheap and cheerful DAB antenna?

Seems to be a problem with many 'plug and play' style devices. My main issue would be connecting the bluetooth for call as you mentioned and also the amount of cabling that requires 'stowing' away.Nothing worse safety wise or 'work wise' than trying to make or answer calls in a car whilst driving. It may be that you need to re read the instruction manuals regards 'Phone book' searching, I would have thought that voice recognition type phonebook searches would be 'de rigour' these days? Another great little video, looking forward to the dash cam review.

Hi purchased the 350 to replace my old Sonitchi which used an external mag mount and works great, no loss of signal in the St16 and surrounding areas. The Nextbase 350 doesn’t seem to work well on the dab, poor signal after installing the Ariel correctly. Unable to listen to much, when it did work it sounded like a gargling sound then lost signal. Line in worked ok, didn’t try the BT gave up with it. Disappointed to say the least and will be return it for a refund. .Power supply used out of box .Ariel fitted to screen with the ground connected to roof via magnet Sorry Nextbase but a Sonitchi with mag mount costing around £50.00 or so has a far better reception, unless l have received a faulty unit.

Those windscreen aerials never get decent reception in my experience - which is frustrating seeing as they are included with the radio. As for the menu interface, I’ve found the Pure Highway DAB to be far more user friendly

The DAB signal dropping out when charging your phone is a common problem, I have a head unit DAB radio and the signal drops by half when my dashcam is connected.

I think the problem with a unit like this is there simply isn't enough demand for their to be competition and inovation of the product. Most people are happy with their current FM radio, others prefer using an MP3 player or CD's. Increasingly cars are coming with DAB as standard so there is a very small market for a DAB adaptor. This market is made even tighter because with increasing availability of mobile internet you can simply just stream services through your phone.

Ian, I have found the best way to listen to 6 music is through the iPlayer radio app. As long as you have 3 or 4g signal, you’re good to go.

To be fair there's a hard wire kit and a aux cable that can be plugged into the radio. As for dash cams the next base is good but a test on the Garmin dash cam may be worth while .

If I have my dashcam on - which I always have - then my radio and phone through the in-car stereo is totally mangled. Regarding the radio no problem, because I haven't listened to the radio in 25 years, but I can also never use my hands-free in-car phone system :P But that also doesn't really matter, as there is no phone reception outside London, anyway ;)

I don't listen to the radio so i can't say how good or bad these are. With bluetooth kits i think you're best off with an ear piece and headset.

Get a Stanley blade on that old sticker on the window ;)

Advice: Get a proper aerial. I had the same rubbish or dull sounding reception. I found the issue was those crappy stick on screen aerials. Once i changed to an outside amplified aerial the thing was transformed in the quality and amount of stations i could link to was much greater.

Radio 6 music is good. DAB isn’t that good. I have it as standard in a new car and I have issues. I often have to flick between DAB and FM. But that means listening to Radio 2. 😩

Just had one fitted by halfords £109 -after a few miles of driving and trying to rescan (as advised by the halfords fitter) for channels on numerous occasions it still doesnt work properly , i'm taking it back for a refund

Don't know if you gave up on all of this in the end, Ian, but like yourself I can't really live without 6Music and have a car that has neither DAB nor BT. Only had it a few days but its been perfect so far, and comes with a complete mounting kit, inc a decent antenna.

I tried one of these when they first came out it worked while I was sitting at home but as soon as I drove away I got nothing it was a pure wast of money

First things first, did u go to a drive through hairdresser half way through this vid? 😀 Back to DAB, I don't drive but use various DAB radios at home, the worst thing about the system is the actual transmitted audio quality of some stations, even on the supposedly improved DAB+ ones, not so bad on speech but for music they can sound awful, not only are the bit rates far too low but many stations are in mono as well. When DAB first came out it promised CD quality sound - certainly gone downhill in that respect!

DAB generally doesn't sound as good as FM due to data compression I'm afraid. FM can be (but usually isn't due to shitty radio stations) a very good, audiophile sounding medium. There's nothing wrong with the FM system in general. Sounds like some really, really bad software. Also if you see a cheap screen like that, it usually isn't a good sign. Sounds to me like your charger is underpowered really. Maybe get a 4 ampère one and see if that pulls it off.

I can't stand DAB, too low bitrate, drops out if you so much as breathe, and suffers the problem of too many channels with nothing on (particularly the commercial stations where it's all ads with the occasional bit of music)... :\

the dash cams are much better i have the 512 wg and its very good at capturing the silly drivers lol

I bet for the money you'd pay for one of those Nextbase add-ons you could have bought a Sony headunit with DAB on it.

I just don't get the whole DAB radio thing. The sound quality is poor in comparison to a decent FM Stereo signal....especially when played through quality HiFI.

Not impressed with DAB. FM with RDS is all I need.

I listened to 6 Music for years when I lived in Ashton-under-Lyne. Then I moved 3 miles up the road to Mossley. No signal whatsoever. DAB is a deeply imperfect system. If the signal goes below a certain threshold, it mutes out completely. In fairness, that's probably good news for your speakers or your ears if istening on headphones. Digital interference is vicious! From experience, I'd say DAB isn't really a suitable system for listening to music on the move. Living where I do, I can't even get a signal with a domestic setup. I'm massively disappointed in general with DAB, the coverage is patchy at best and in my case it was a complete waste of time once I moved house.

Those plastic locking rings are SHITE! I had a mobile phone holder that went into the CD slot that used one of those rings. Pinch it a bit too tight and they snap. Then the whole assembly is useless.

Just seems like another dangerous electronic distraction while driving.

Get a CB radio and talk to human being's again , get back to the old way's for a bit of fun
