Doug Flutie drop-kicks an extra point. Brett Favre's final? (ha ha!) game at Lambeau. Last place teams fight over draft rights to Reggie Bush?!
This is the final episode of the best NFL highlight show of them all, NFL Primetime, with Chris Berman and Tom Jackson, which ended after week 17 of the 2005 season. (The duo carried on doing highlights, reformatted as "The Blitz," but it wasn't the same). With Tom Jackson retiring (and Berman not far behind), this is a tribute to their fantastic blend of sports and entertainment.
Among the NFL landmark events featured in this episode:
Tony Dungy comes back to coaching after his son committed suicide
Jerome Bettis is announced one last time in Pittsburgh
Dick Vermeil coaches his final game in Kansas City
Deion Sanders plays his final game, with the Baltimore Ravens
Mike Tice takes the Vikings to a winning record after the disastrous boat party scandal, and is immediately fired (you can see the announcement come over the ticker)
Bill Belichick admits it was Chris Berman who motivated him to try the drop-kick extra point with Flutie
They show a clip of the very first episode of NFL Primetime from September 13, 1987

@Harry Engel The budget cuts hurt ESPN in a way, too. Due to those cuts, _Baseball Tonight_ is relegated to before _Sunday Night Baseball,_ a nightly offering during the Winter Meetings, during postseason, and at the College World Series.

Hate Spreader ESPN was forced to cancel it (even though they didn’t cancel it immediately) NBC got the contractual rights to do a Sunday Night highlight reel show which meant ESPN couldn’t do NFL Primetime during the regular season or playoffs (with the exception of the Championship games and Super Bowl). This is also the reason NFL Primetime is now an ESPN+ exclusive, ESPN still can’t do the format on national television for now

Not only that, but the games themselves have devolved. Yes, the game is now known to be dangerous to your mental faculties, but even then, the plays are sloppier, defense is practically nonexistent, offensive line play is even worse, and running the ball is considered an antiquated notion. Hell, there are entire pages of playbooks filled with plays designed to collect yards via pass interference penalty. Speaking of which, penalties are somehow both more pedantic and lazier than ever before. What even is the sport anymore? It's devolved into rub routes and fade routes to giant wide receivers who get more touches per game than the halfback. Clock management is a thing of the past, as is wearing down the defense. Trench play is nonexistent because you're throwing it anyway, just grab an OLB and hang on for dear life. The art of route running is practically dead; only undersized receivers (pretty much everyone short of 6'3" now) and Jordy Nelson need to worry about such an art. Controlling a game is for teams with no quarterback, it seems, and players are more worried about being touched on the field than doing their jobs. You know why the Patriots are a mysterious deity now? Because they still play football like it's 2004, while also taking advantage of the passer-friendly rules, and I hate that as a fan of football, I have to respect them more than any other team except my own, because I'm a Seahawks fan through and through.

Yeah, the rule book wasn't so stringent, and media wasn't so pervasive as to affect the way coaches design their schemes. Remember, it's not a passing league now; it's a QB's league. All you need is a QB and a support network designed specifically for him and you'll be fine *cough cough _Andrew Luck_ cough*, while the Saints, Rams, and Vikings have all built the new wave of dominance from dynamic tailback play and defense in the wake of Seattle's demise. The early-to-mid 2000s weren't like that at all. Some teams thrived on their passing game. Others had tailbacks that hammered away at defenses. Still others were immovable on defense. The Manning-era Colts, Alexander-era Seahawks, The Bucs That Dungy Built, and the Greatest Show on Turf all thrived around the same time with the same set of rules. All of these teams were wildly different, yet they all co-existed. Winning wasn't about having the right personnel; it was about DOING YOUR JOB. Is it any wonder that the Patriots do as well as they do, seeing as they're the only ones who have held onto that tenet so tightly?

I Would say golden era was 1983 - 1995. You had the intersection of The classic RB led teams with the creation and rise of the single back offense, west coast offense, and spread passing offense. while on defense you had the beginnings of the defensive specialist packages scheme, cover 2 defense, knock you out safeties roaming the field, and the rise of elite athletes playing defensive positions. linebackers were now running sub 4.6 40 times and Dlineman sub 4.8 40s. Guys were praised by announcers for knocking someone out on the field. Guys played with broken arms casted up. The decline began in 93 when the NFL made it legal for a QB to throw the ball away to avoid a sack. In 95 they expanded protections to include no driving QBs into the ground on tackles or tossing them. They then made it illegal to touch a WR after 5 yds and more and more the league Turned into a fantasy football based game by 2000. Before 1993 it wasn’t all about the QB, It wasn’t all about stats, and It wasn’t called entertainment. Players and fans didn’t look for or ask for a flag after every play. And players weren’t hugging and exchanging jerseys after games. It was called competition and It was all about wins and loses. The ultimate TEAM game.

After watching the POS that was tonight's ESPN Double-Header, it truly hits hard how great Prime Time and ESPN truly was. There was a time which I couldn't wait every week to see highlights of all the games. It didn't matter which teams were featured, it didn't matter what the results of the games ended up being, Chris Berman and Tom Jackson were the very BEST in the entire world at what they did. Watched the 95 divisional playoff divisional edition (2 shows) best show ever i was 11 years old and every might before then and shortly after I made sure I was in front of the tv in the basement watching ESPN for this show. Then hockey night in america sundays 8pm. Honestly so many good childhood memories tied to this show. "David Akers from?.....(Tom) Louisville....."

Patrick Pass who actually did play some QB at Georgia where he threw some passes. Then he became Belichick’s RB/FB hybrid in the NFL

Back when they only showed games at a few casinos sportsbooks in vegas we would watch games all day long and then come home and watch this and all highlights. It was our routine for years and i feel i grew up with Berman and Tom Jackson.good times🙂

I was already excited about ESPN+ just get access to all the 30 for 30 docs, but to get Boomer and Tommy doing the Sunday highlights once again after all these years, it's too good to be true.
