The rule was changed because the Chiefs beat the Bills on the old rules and the league thought the Bills should have had a chance at the ball. But no one said a thing when the Chiefs lost that game against New England a few years earlier in the same fashion.

I had no idea that OT in playoffs is not ending in one OT quarter. The game would not have ended at the 0:00 of the first OT, since KC still was working on their first possession. It's a pretty rare thing to happen, SF has the ball for the first half of OT, then KC still has the ball as the clock is ticking down to end the first OT qtr. I was losing my mind that KC didn't call a timeout, and that's because, no timeout was needed. They would have just started the 2nd OT quarter, and KC would have tried for a TD or kicked the FG to tie it, which then (I think?) it becomes sudden death. CRAZY. lol

As a Chiefs fan, I was saying the same thing. It would have pretty much guaranteed a TD with how tired they were. At least the way they went, it put the pressure on KC to score and not make a mistake or the game was over.

@@dunkingpawn3215 It's about a 50/50 call, either way. If you can get your team some needed rest, it's great game management. Otherwise, put them out there winded, back to back, and they get scored on easy. Coaches have to think about the long game. Getting the ball third was also a possibility, and a game winning strategy. Sure, the Chiefs _wanted_ to score a TD, and would also possibly go for 2. But if they ended up with 4th and 14, from the 30, they definitely go for the FG to keep the game going. It wasn't bad strategy, the 49ers just failed to execute, and put enough pressure on the Chiefs with only a FG.

Shanahan said they looked at analytics for the decision to take the ball first in OT, but this was the first time the new OT rules were in effect so what the hell were they analyzing??? They could only have analyzed games which had the old OT rules... Makes no sense... Chiefs were prepared for every outcome, whereas Shanahan just expects his better players to win regardless of lesser preparation, hence he keeps losing SB's in which he has double digit leads. And it's now becoming a thing where his players don't feel confident even when they're leading.

I agree with you overall but your claim that "there were no complaints for 60 years" is not accurate. There were certainly complaints made about the overtime rules over the years, both by people inside the NFL and outside it, but those complaints were routinely silenced by a simple retort: "It's football; if you don't like that they got the ball first, stop them from scoring."

I think one key distinction to draw is that Chris Jones is a team captain whereas Kyle Juszczyk isn't. So Jones is absolutely one of the players I would expect to be fully engaged on all the higher level game strategy going on, whereas I could see a regular team member (even one of the veterans and star players) not being engaged to quite the same level. Would be interested in what the 49ers captains have to say about knowing the OT rules or their team's plans for it.

Kyle Juszczyk is a _Harvard_ grad and has been in the NFL longer than Chris Jones. He has played in a large number of postseason games as a member of both the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. It's surprising that he both didn't know the current postseason overtime rules, and his admission that his coaching staff had not gone over the postseason overtime rules, given that the 49ers had played in four postseason games before this super bowl during the past two seasons with this rule in effect.

Given the situation the Niners had, it makes good sense to receive. This is one of those, good coach/bad coach calls where you are grilled under a lightbulb in a dark room if it doesn't work out and you're a ballsy genius if it does. Niners D was gassed. That alone, in my mind, makes receiving the kick a logical choice. I'm a Chiefs fan, but I've watched enough football to know that Kyle Shanahan doesn't make many bad coaching decisions. He was between a rock and a hard place on this one. Respect and sympathy for the Niners and their fans. Class organization top to bottom with a classy fan base. We longtime Chiefs fans had 50 years of pain, not even reaching the Super Bowl. Good luck next season.

Reids team, it's been a talking point for years, it used to be kick a field goal you win, they changed it bc it was corny, it's slightly better now, still think in the playoffs it should just be another 15 minutes 2 timeouts, 1 challenge can be used, but mostly from the booth as well. Kyle made the correct decision then, should have just went for the touchdown instead of thinking mahomes wasn't going to score.

Andy Reid knew the game would be close because that is a part of his typical play not to lose, keep it close, and pile all the pressure on Mahomes to always win the game on the final drive game plan. Mahomes is that good. But there is never a guarantee that every game will come down to the final drive. Eventually Andy Reid should put Mahomes in the no huddle. And tell Mahomes to play like it is the final drive throughout the game so they can start blowing teams out. So a ref call or drop pass, or one bad play, can't cost you the game.

Shanahan should've made sure all his players knew the OT rules although I find it kinda strange that some of the 9ers players didn't already know the new rules as it was talked about non-stop after the KC v Buffalo (13 second) OT game a couple of years ago. And besides, the ref literally told everyone the rules at the coin toss. Anyway I think it showed that 9ers may have had the better roster but they defo weren't as prepared as KC. And listening to the SB "Mic'd Up" video the 9ers players never sounded truly confident even when they were dominating the Chiefs Offense. e.g when Greenlaw got his injury running onto the field Fred Warner reacted as though that injury had cost them any chance of the game, what happened to "next man up"? 9ers had about 5 plays in which they would've probably won the SB had anyone of them gone their way, but allowing Chris Jones to go completely unblocked blew a td, then allowing McDuffie to go unblocked on 3rd&4 cost them the game. Either Shanahan isn't as great as people think or Purdy doesn't know how set up protection to pick up the blitz... It's probably both as we don't see Purdy change the protection much, but Shanahan was responsible for the 3rd&4 which could've won them the game in which unexplainably he had Kittle in the backfield??? If he'd had a RB there they may have picked up McDuffie (although maybe not) but Kittle was never gonna see it on his "blind side" as he never even looked in that direction. Chiefs were fortunate to win the game, and I say that as a Chiefs fan...
