It's because when the patriots played the steelers during the regular season that year Jesse James did the exact same thing to take the lead and they called it an incomplete pass and took the points back ultimately allowing the patriots to win. The NFL also changed this rule/made a more clear distinction after the season ended because of controversy surrounding what the refs were and weren't calling catches.

Super Bowl 48 is my favorite since I’m a Seahawks fan but I understand for everyone else, it sucked. But objectively speaking, this is definitely the best of the past 10, maybe even 20, years. Threw for 505 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions against a Eagles defense that had only given up 33 points in their last four games including two playoff games.
