Exactly, also for Ethereum the phrase "instead of ledgers together, you string computer programs together" is not very accurate. You can indeed connect computer programs (Smart Contracts) together but Ethereum, just like Bitcoin, is a string of blocks that on top of it has the capability of running Smart Contracts that store its results in the Ethereum ledger.

It may or may not be priced at 500k, entirely dependent on the desire of people to "own" stuff. Also, like in a museum you can view the painting of Mona Lisa without paying 800M. That's a very important point. As long as no legal rights are transferred the buyer of the NFT only buys the ownership of a copy and nothing prevents others from having bit by bit the same file but for free. I cannot really imagine how one could brag about owning something when everyone else can say: "Nice. I got the same for free."

EXACTLY! You don't own "the unique original" piece of art, like you would with DaVinci's Mona Lisa. It's as though ONLY Jpeg's of the Mona Lisa existed. They are not only COMPLETELY FUNGIBLIE, but also ABSOLUTELY FREE. All the NFT is is a receipt- it has nothing to do with "owning" an original piece of art. It's completely useless. At least in Decentralland or the MetaVerse, you own something unique and useful in the game. NFT's would be like you have something in the game that literally everyone can have, but you have a receipt for yours. Who cares- the receipt is useless if everyone else can have the same thing without the receipt

This was my next question. So if someone just takes a photo of the same item (the Mona Lisa for example), and make it an NFT, then shouldn't it drastically decrease the value of similar NFTs? Why would people even invest in an NFT like this?

@@kash4565 exactly. every photo of the mona lisa will differ - because capturing a physical object on camera is not a deterministic process - factors such as the lighting in the room or the position of the camera will always be slightly different. so then the question is - which of these almost identical NFTs is more valuable? if they are all equally valuable then because there can be an infinite number of them then they are all worthless (not scarce and not useful). but lets say people decide the first decent quality image is the most valuable - even that is not scarce. the reason is that you can make an NFT and only reveal it later on. so you might buy an NFT that you think is the best and first high quality image of the mona lisa for a lot of money, only to find out that its not the first - the first was created earlier but never revealed until later. then what gives your own copy value? worse still, what if someone shorts your NFT and then reveals they have an NFT created from a higher quality image earlier in time? then they just made a lot of money off you. in fact the original creator of every NFT might as well do this - always create 2 NFTs of the same thing, sell the one considered to be of lower value (whatever that entails to the buyer), then short that lower value one, and reveal the existence of the first. this way they can double their money, or potentially earn many multiples of their original sale revenue using leverage.

Let me explain the actual application of an NFT: It's like your college degree diploma from an accredited institution, except that the block chain itself its not an accredited institution, it can only certify the authenticity of the metadata it was encrypted with. But technically if Harvard wanted to NFT their diplomas; they could and it would be a very reliable way to prove you went there. Otherwise, is also a way to certify ownership of an image or icon that you can control the fate of like a movie script, although, local authorities do not yet consider NFTs as an official ownership title, the second that happens then NFTs would appreciate dramatically. The short of it is: NFTs are a way to certify authenticity and ownership of something, that is better than current paper and simple file technology.

Also NFTs are not Long term efficient, if everyone used them in burocratic ways like your diploma exemple we would be using way too much resorces just to archive and process it. NFTs are a mess, also they are not prove of Ownership. All you "Own" its the Token that will show you the Image. A lot of people dont get that, spend a fortune and then when they check the law they realised their huge mistake.

NFTs are essentially digital signatures verifying authenticity - like the video states, you can take a screenshot or buy a copy of an original painting but how do you prove it's real? The only value it holds is that there is a stamp of authenticity coming from a wallet verified as the original artist. Currently it's a fad, but has real use cases such as land deeds or educational certificates or the ethical/sustainable sourcing of goods for a product. It's all about trust and having a universal system that is accepted - which is not a point we are even close to! With artists and copyright, it should be possible to write smart contracts on any intellectual property that automatically execute royalties based on their use: streaming a song? free - playing it on the radio? $0.1 per play - using it in a movie? big bucks!!! The idea of blockchain is to give power back to the people, just look at what Brave browser is doing..
