I KNEW John Tortorella would be here LOL I remember him from the early 2000s lightning. His media event freakouts are awesome. Lecavalier was looking for a trade because he couldn't stand him. But that's his thing. He makes the team collectively hate him to work together. That's how the 2004 Lightning won the Cup.

As someone who has been on teams that got shouted at on the ice by the coach... there is nothing that stiffens my muscles more than the sound of the arena buzzing in-between the moments when the coach is shouting. You know the coach is absolutely furious when you can hear the arena buzzing like that. Idk if its the lights or the ventilation, but that's a sound the freezes my blood every time.

As much as Torts yells, he is still an amazing coach, when he yells at players, he gets them going. There is a clip somewhere where Torts was yelling at Dubois on the bench during the qualifiers after he turned over the puck or something, but what did Dubois do after being yelled at? He got a hat trick and helped the Jackets win the game.

The way torts worked that speech was so perfect . I’m a coach and this is beautiful to watch. He comes in with a blaze of fire “dipping them about not going hard Enough” then he builds them back up with “ I know this fucking team is that way, ive seen you guys play that way” then he pulls it all together and gives them a boost of confidents “we got 40 minutes to chip away. “Let’s fucking go here boys” for someone playing high level hockey they will appreciate how well planned torts speeches. He’s not just throwing stuff against the wall and hoping it sticks he’s got everything planned out

I was the capt. of my varsity soccer team which happen to also be city champions of NY back in the late 80s. We had a new coach souphmore year. During our first game we're up like 3-0 and he subs in a couple of our weaker players pretty early in the game. I muttered something to one of my teammates like "what the hell is he doing?" I had no idea he heard me. So game goes on and we easily win. Every one is happy. We're sitting down in our little team circle after the game as our coach is praising everyone. Then, suddenly, he looks at me and at the top of his lungs with a beat red angry face screams..."And Mr. Neary, if you EVER QUESTION ANY OF MY DECISIONS EVER AGAIN I'LL KICK YOU OFF THIS TEAM AND YOU'LL NEVER PLAY HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER AGAIN." I was mortified. Almost cried. We ended up winning the state championship again and he loved me as a player but I'll never, ever forget that lambasting I took. He's now in his 60s retired and we're friends.

Played on a team when I was 14 that was in an all province final, and we were down in the series losing our first two games at home. We were a massively over achieving team from a very small rural town, team we were up against was from a big city with well over a couple million people. We were out of our depth. After the second game the coach came in the dressing room, stared at us for like 10 seconds just red as a tomato but still with a very calm expression, then suddenly just Chuck Norris kicked all the sticks leaning against the wall. Of course I was sitting right there and it startled the living shit out of me lol it was just so random. Gave a short but very pissed off speech and then for the grand finally WWE’d the garbage pail into the ground, getting trash everywhere. I remember thinking to myself “Yeah it’s not that serious, Jesus Christ.”

On the opposite end of this I recently had the opportunity to see an Avalanche practice while doing some audio cabling work at their practice facility called South Suburban. This was right after the Nashville series. It was basically a bunch of young animals skating the friggin blades off their feet like they were in a game and the coach Bednar was just standing around f--ing off on his phone while his guys were tearing up the rink. I don’t know a whole lot about hockey but it seems like some teams are just built different.

I believe the Torts speech was from the 2012 Winter Classic? Where the Rangers erased that 2 goal deficit to beat the Flyers who have been bad in their own zone for ten years.

ive had good coaches. ive had bad coaches. not a single good coach of mine DIDNT yell at us for our bullshit. and we were kids, not even playing professionally for millions of dollars. outsiders might look at this and think the coaches are being dramatic but reality is this kind of hard headed coaching is what gets the point across.
