This interview is such a treasure and I had no idea it existed. Excellent job to all of you guys. Thank you so much. Jagr is such an icon. I remember a story from back then (I grew up in Cresson PA) about Jaromir driving around Pittsburgh in a Camaro and getting pulled over doing over 100+ mph and of course he didn't get a ticket. I'm pretty sure it's a true story. Anyway, great job and a big thank you from me (that's not worth anything!).

Watching Jags was one of a kind in NY from 05-07. Opposing players would abandon position and other defensive opportunities because their assignment that shift would be to shadow Jagr. It was frustrating to watch my favorite player get smothered all shift by a player not even paying attention to the play. His speed wasn't like in his prime but it wouldn't matter, he was so good he just needed the puck.

I lived in Washington when he was traded there. A huge part of that trade at the time was how Pittsburgh had been the Capitals nemesis - there were several years during the 90s that the Capitals thought they had good contending teams and Pittsburgh would crush them in the playoffs every time. So the owner finally had enough and gave him the biggest contract in the NHL at the time -$11 Mill/yr - that was 20 yrs ago !!! He was never comfortable there - it was not a great supporting cast and there was too much expectations on him alone - he never looked comfortable there - to see him today it is too bad he is a wonderful guy. He really stayed to himself - the word back in those days is he was really into online gambling - LOL - but what a wonderful guy - and his english is great.
@siobhanofarrell4646

He was very unhappy there. There was an article out a few months ago on The Athletic’s site - and Darius Kasparaitis talked about how Jaromir ideally would have wanted to be able to stay in Pittsburgh his entire career - just like Mario - because he’s always just idolized him, loved him and respected him so much, but they were coming out of bankruptcy and just couldn’t keep him. And he knew they needed to sign other players, if they finished too high up in the standings they wouldn’t be able to get good draft picks. In order to save the team - long term - who knew it meant he’d have to be traded. So he found himself traded to a team in a place that wasn’t considered a “hockey town”, Ron Wilson always acted like he hated Jaromir, even before he was traded there, and when they replaced Wilson with Cassidy and that blew up - the media were really shitty to Jaromir. They started branding him a “coach killer” even though in the Cassidy case (and with Constantine in Pittsburgh) the entire team couldn’t stand the coach. And then the fans in Pittsburgh would just boo him relentlessly; Kasparaitis said Jaromir thought they all hated his guts, that they thought he’d betrayed Mario by being traded, that he’d failed Mario, the team and the city by not being able to win a Cup for them.

What an interview!. Jagr & Lemieux provided me with so many great memories when I was in middle school and high school. I never for one second understood why penguins fans booed Jagr. I don’t know if they were just too young to understand the state of the franchise financially Howard Baldwin was a terrible owner just so irresponsible with money but I remember thinking to myself Jagr leaving was painful but yet I thought it was necessary. I went to several games after he left to Pittsburgh to watch him play. It was just so weird seeing him in a different jersey. Specially, with Washington, but I’m sorry I could never boo the guy he just did a lot of great for the Pittsburgh Penguins. I think if there is one thing that really bothered me about him is you know he was a captain and yet he was such a coach killer. During this interview, it was kind of crazy to hear him admit that. Jagr is one of the 🐐s and we had them here in Pittsburgh for the better part of his career once again it’s just how spoiled we’ve been here in Pittsburgh.
