First I tape the whole stick from butt to toe and then cut the stick completely in half. Then I tape my mouth, ears, and eyes shut and sit there in the locker room alone and in the dark holding half of the stick in each hand until my teammates and coaches arrive in the morning. Thankfully nowadays they all act like this is normal which is great bc this process puts me in the perfect mindset for practices and games👍🏻.

Most relaxing video ever! ☺ Also very informative. I picked up hockey fairly recently and gotta say, Eichel's tape job is the way to go. For the handle anyway- the knob, twirls, grip tape, etc. For the blade... Jamie Benn. Strictly. With a little more tape towards the toe. 😄
@joeidaho5938 Жыл бұрын
My taping of the butt end is pretty close to what Eichel does....and I tape the full blade right up to the shaft....from toe to heel. Haven't changed it for a long time. Works well for me. I even tape the lower 2 ft of the shaft....as I think it softens the blow from the constant slashes...and stick lifting, whether myself or others. Sticks seem to last a hell of a long time. Have only broken one stick in the past five years.

@PuckDaily2 жыл бұрын
Ya, you can always put in a plug if you cut it too short. I used to put in plugs all the time for kids who outgrew their stick when i worked at a proshop. If you dont know what it is, its just a piece of wood hot glued into the top to extend length (but if the plug is larger than one inch, it could change the kick point or where it flexes on your shaft which can change how it feels when shooting). Also its pretty usual to cut your stick eye level, or nose level on skates. Thats just how i been taught to cut my sticks by my dad.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the point of taping your stick? I'm from Australia, we don't have ice hockey.
@PuckDaily3 жыл бұрын
It’s to avoid chipping of expensive sticks (partly), but mostly it’s for grip and the puck feels softer on the stick with tape. Most guys including me also wax it to make the tape last longer, repelling water, and also softening the touch on the puck for stick handling. Going without tape for me would be like going outside with no pants on. I could do it, but it would just feel wrong and everyone will think I’m a weirdo for it.
@ripitup323 жыл бұрын
@@PuckDaily Thanks man.. It does make me wonder why the head of ice hockey sticks isn’t just made of a material that is already optimum and has all these qualities (water repelling, grippy, soft feel for puck handling). However I am a sportsman and I understand every player likes to have everything set up exactly how they like it. And sometimes an act like taping your stick (for me it’s cleaning my boots) can help you mentally focus on the upcoming task.

What’s the point of taping the blade? I get the top of the stick but why the blade?
@jdbankshot5 жыл бұрын
a bare blade is slick, this tape provides grip & friction for improved puck control. it is tape that is designed especially for hockey sticks (some lacrosse players use it also). the tape also provides a layer of protection against nicks & chips. back in the day, sticks were made of wood, & the tape would help prevent moisture from seeping into the blade, weakening it. the main reason though, is to provide some grip for the puck to improve puck-handling. on an un-taped blade, the puck would slide off much easier.
