INHL team relocations are wild. That is due to the fact the league attracts unqualified owners or ownership groups like moths to a flame. It seems that all you need to do to buy a professional hockey franchise is say you have money. That may be an exaggeration but only slightly.
Historically speaking, many markets that have lost teams ended up getting new ones. Unless your team happened to play in Quebec or Hartford. In that case, Gary Bettman has a deep, unexplained hatred for your markets and seems hellbent on making sure you never have an NHL franchise again.
Beyond that, most NHL team relocations involve unfit or underfunded owners making bad decisions. People in positions they should never have been in the first place were allowed to decide the fate of teams they sold anyway. It’s just wild.
Of course, it is important to note that a lot of this was due to the NHL expansion efforts starting in 1967 as well as the WHA merger in 1979. Growth was preferred to stability. Sometimes the results were good for hockey-other times, not so much.

The Touchback is the world’s best sports and culture website…or something like that. The site is the brainchild of Andrew Davis and Cheyenne Hollis, two American expats wanting to bring a different perspective to sports, fantasy, betting and a bunch of other random stuff. You’ll either really like it or really hate it. But it’s worth reading either way.

The North Stars EVER moving from the Hockey State is the most criminal thing the NHL has ever allowed. They should have said "NO! Here is an expansion team for Dallas!".

Les Alexander ALMOST bought the Edmonton Oilers from owner Peter Pocklington back in 1997. Les planned to "bring back the Oilers to Houston in hockey form" but he promised the city of Edmonton he would for sure keep the team in Edmonton for at least 2 years. (catch being while he built a new arena!). The City of Edmonton would NOT let the owner Pocklington out of his lease so to get out of it, they demanded full payment of the remaining years (think it was more than 10 and less than 20 years). It killed the deal. And then a local ownership group, including Marvel Spinderman artist Todd McFarlane bought the team.

Great Video. Thanks for extra benefit, when showing The Kansas City Scouts playing The Chicago Black Hawks. I got to see My Idol, The Late Great Chicago Goalie, Tony O Esposito playing the puck for Chicago. I agree completely on the majority of your views & I especially agree with Not A 3rd Atlanta team (sorry to all the faithful Atlanta Fans), when it already failed twice, while The Quebec Nordiques, who were 1 year shy of A Stanley Cup Win haven't been able to get them (another Nordiques team) to occupy an already existing Arena. Let me know what you think

Good video & your right no team in Alanata & your right about blaming fans that loved the team. I also agree give Quebec a team already. My suggestion for ya is do a video on the possible move of the St.Louis Blues.

@@michaelleroy9281 they (and most other teams in the south) only pull in fans when they're good. when they are bad they hemorrage money. this would not be the case in QC, even with higher ticket prices. because like 50% of the population are hockey fans.

Ok, this was fascinating. I am a big fan of the NHL, well, a fan of playoff hockey, full disclosure. We were partial season ticket holders for the Sharks at the Cow Palace. Was a ton of fun even though they sucked. I knew there was some sort of complicated relationship between the Stars and the Sharks, and you laid it out perfectly. My head is still spinning. An expansion draft for the North Stars, too?? I would LOVE to see you tackle this, in time. That is, the difference in the expansion draft of what the Sharks were afforded, compared to the "gift" expansion draft the Knights received 🤬Casual hockey fans have no clue that the NHL laid out a red carpet for VKG, and kudos to them for taking it and riding it all the way to their championship. It just kills me that they and other expansion teams already have a Cup, yet, the Sharks continue to flounder. I mean, we should be very thankful that the Sharks have been more competitive than not in their history.

After doing this video, I went down the rabbit hole of all those 1990s NHL expansions and it is equally as wild. It is something I definitely want to cover in due time. I'm also fascinated by the Sharks' time at the Cow Palace so I may want to hear some of your stories if you ever have the time.

In 1970, Jerry Seltzer (owner of Roller Derby International) wanted to buy the Seals. He had a plan to turn it around. Bill Torrey (who went on to build the 1980's Isles dynasty) would have been his GM. However, Wayne Valley (partner with the Raiders) was also supposed to be involved, and the Mensa committee (what I call the idiot NHL owners at the time) astutely (LOL!) gave the team to Finley (they didn't want to deal with two people). Torrey quit, got a job on Long Island, and the rest is history.

Wayne Valley would get absolutely screwed by Al Davis a few years later too. Poor guy went to the Olympics and lost control of the franchise over some absolute nonsense.

Do you think Cleveland will get another chance at the NHL? We've supported the Monsters well over the years and won the AHL Calder Cup in 2016. Though I think that Columbus is more or less a pan-Ohio NHL team. Especially considering that Cleveland is now CBJ's AHL affiliate, I think the days of major league hockey in Cleveland are effectively over unless something drastic changes.
@thetouchback
@thetouchback 10 ай бұрын
All it takes is one person or ownership group coming together to make something happen. That being said, Cleveland would definitely need a hockey-focused arena to make anything possible and I don't know what the odds are of that ever occurring. Unlike other sports leagues though, you can never say never when it comes to an NHL franchise showing up in a city.

Don't blame Bettman for Hartford. There's no way a Connecticut team can survive at the highest level of a sport with 3 teams in the NYC metro and one team in Boston. You'd have an easier time finding a fan base in Alaska at that point.
