I have been a Star Trek fan since watching reruns of TOS as a child and a fan of current Trek including Strange New Worlds. I’m sad to hear of her passing. A true trailblazer who has contributed to our world not just sci-fi. My prayers go out to her family. 🙏🏿😔

Just last night, I was telling a friend how much she influenced me growing up. Watching Star Trek, I grew up not knowing racism or sexism. It wasn't until I entered the work force that I began to see people being treated differently. Because of Nichelle Nichols, I never thought there were limits to what I could do. 💛

Same here. Racism is not part of our human nature growing up; we fall miserably into it when others lead us down that path. I remember the mix of confusion and dread I felt when our schoolteacher told us that, at that very moment, there were kids in America who were not allowed to attend their own school because their skin was a darker colour. Living close to a beach, most of us children used to go a dark shade of brown during the summer. She might as well have said that pineapple juice comes from cows - it made no sense to me whatsoever. That has remained an important growing-up moment from my very young days. At home, afterwards, my parents confirmed that what the teacher had said was true. Racism is as irrational now as it was then for me, only now I know what a wicked thing it is, and how devastating it is for its victims. Uhura was just Uhura, a supremely attractive lady whom I have come to admire in a more real and rounded way for the person she is. I say 'is' and not 'was', because I am a Christian and Nichelle Nichols is not over and done with, by any means. 🙏

@@toulamaccrue9906 i am old enough to see them in real time not reruns. This was when the race riots, black panther and Vietnam was current issues. We moved out of Cambridge, ma as I was attacked for being a white child walking in a black neighborhood. We also owned a corner store that was burned for "allowing" all to make purchases through the front door. My parents did not believe skin tones made people different. Blacks hated us for being white, whites hated us for serving blacks and catholics hated us for having jewish relatives. I was taught respect is not a color, religion or nationality it is something that needs to be earned.

Well, another one of the bridge crew has passed on to the Great Galaxy - the one that even the Webb telescope cannot piece. In many ways she was the most important, because she showed the the U.S.S. Enterprise was truly an integrated starship, made of of people of all types of race, creed and color. Without intending to, she blazed a trail how television depicted black actors. That - and the fact she and the rest blazed a new trail for science fiction in television - is a legacy of which anyone can be proud.

She put stars in our eyes with her grace, beauty, and intelligence. My law degree with an emphasis in space is a testament to her influence to help me see myself far into the future; a future no one else in my law school class could imagine. Not long ago, I was selected to be a member of a think tank to help research space anomalies along with scientists and engineers because of the unique perspective I could bring to the investigation.
