I was so fortunate in the early 80's due to my dad being partners of a large game room in Louisiana. Crazy Climber was the second arcade that I had sitting beside the Christmas tree! Star Castle being the first.

John - I'm dying for the pinball reveal. Waiting for that video! I had a thought about your venture as an operator. My wife and I moved to Montreal recently. There's an arcade called "Arcade 2000" that's downtown but also very close to a couple of Universities. I went in and was shocked at how packed-out it was: totally full. I know you and Jay have a good thing going with The Hanger but setting something up near a college or University might be a good option for a future venture depending on where you are. Just a thought.

Hey John, I find that when I play CC it is easier to move the guy if you keep both hands in the same column. You won't get hung up when trying to dodge obstacles as much. Once you get the rhythm down you won't have any problem getting 100,000 points or more. First building should never cost you a life. Second will get a cheap death from the girders. Third building billboards will require you to move really fast! Forth building you'll need a couple lives to get through every time.

John - about those locks you keep having to drill out... Google 'bump key'. It is a special type of key that you can make from a regular key using a file. You insert it into the lock and tap it with a piece of wood/small hammer etc while applying a small amount of turning pressure. It will open the lock without damaging either the lock or the bump key. Usually you only need 4 or 5 taps to open the simple locks found on arcade machines. Not only would it save you having to drill out locks, it could also be a useful thing to have on your keychain for when you go to look at a new machine.

Regarding the ball tops, you need to use a flathead screwdriver on the bottom to hold it then twist the ball on top as tight as you can with your other hand. Then when people try to unscrew it, the whole shaft turns and they can't take it off. This is how they prevent people from stealing them in the arcade.
@badvoltron
@badvoltron 7 жыл бұрын
On Japanese joysticks you dont need to remove the shaft like that, just unscrew the ball top, there is clearly a slot in the bottom of the shaft where you can put a flat head screwdriver to hold the shaft still while you unscrew/tighten the ball top.

Rich from This Old Game can screen print directly onto a control panel. He's done it before with Missile Command control panels. Also, that would be an easy design to vectorize. If I had a 600 PPI scan of it I'd probably vectorize it just for the fun of it. I did the vectorization for all the Super Punch-Out stuff that Rich and Mike Haaland (Mike's Arcade) sells (side art, "Ducking Pull" sticker, and marquee).

I never really considered it as I didn't want to risk messing up what little original art I had on the CP. This game is very rare and it's not trivial to get another control panel. If I can find someone that can skillfully silkscreen on steel we might revisit this. I can vectorize the art no problem.

oh bum, deleted my comment by accident. tl:dr, 100% agree with the removal of the vinyl, maybe cover it with Tackyback if you can find it to preserve the silk screen. Also, props for keeping your legit "new" ROM set as is. Here's a lil tip that works for removing large adhesives from thin metal, instead of heating the plastic that the glue is on (in your case the black crap),, clamp the part down and heat the BACK of the thin metal. As small of a heat differential it may seem, it helps a load - the bit you're peeling off is a lot cooler than the metal you're heating, meaning most of the adhesive will stick to the bit you are removing. Please find an online sources for dime and dollar bits and bobs and buy a load. A tray of coach bolts and washers, loads of E clips, daft crep like that, stop feeding the hardware stores quarters, save them for your arcade.
