I mean, when you cut weight as consistently as Hendricks did his whole career, it gets harder to maintain if you aren’t dieting year-round. Part of me does feel bad but then it’s like, if you can’t diet like a champ, you won’t be able to compete like a champ. I think if he managed his weight in between fights, his career could have ended differently.

Although, I despise the fact that weight cutting is still an essential variable in our sport, I deeply respect you for what you and Lockhart have done over the years, as maintaining diet independent of weight cutting is unequivocally good for the soul for a giant majority of fighters / athletes. You're a pioneer of our sport and thanks for all you've done and continue to do. It's easy for fans of our sport to dismiss Johny for a variety of reasons but the fact remains that he was a marauder and a straight up killer who undoubtedly defeated GSP, who undoubtedly for me is still the best MMA fighter along with Demetrious Johnson. Praise for Johny Hendricks's work doesn't getter better than that.

In 2000, I was stationed in Sicily with the U.S. Navy, and desired to compete in that year's WDFPF (World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation) World Championships. However, I had to qualify at my national championships...which was impossible as I was overseas. The ADFPA (American Drug Free Powerlifting Federation) allowed me to compete in the Italian Federation's Championship as a guest lifter in order to get a qualifying total. I normally competed as a 70 kg lifter, but had cut to 60 kg (in THREE days) as I had a better shot at world records and the title! At the weigh in, I made weight, but after I posted my opening attempts, which exceeded the Italian champion's, the organizers said the scale was 'recalibrated' and (only) I had to reweigh...and I weighed 0.1 kg over with NO chance to challenge or reweigh after trying to drop the weight! Naturally this pissed me off so much I exceeded my goals, but only placed second to the eventual world champion in the 70 kg class! I petitioned the ADFPA to compete in the 60 kg class at the 2000 WDFPF World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, and they agreed...I set FOUR world records and won my first World Championship!!!
