@@VanlifewithAlan if all it took was a 28-year-old dangling a carrot in front of a greedy bank in return for 75% of the bank's capital then I would blame the powers at be! Leeson committed fraud, but he faxed a customer paper from his personal fax machine which nobody bothered to check...

Leeson lost all my sympathy after having seen the 1996 documentary. His behaviour was appalling. I hope he has repented.

Why? Who was injured other than other rich idiots? He showed the financial system was a farce and unregulated, just as intended by the people that scam it.

Maybe they're right, maybe we the public need to be a bit wiser on banking. However, as other commenters have said, that's what the FCA is meant to be there for in effect. There's been little to no consequences for the reckless behaviour of bankers over the years. Hearing that it is the public that needs to wise up is perhaps commendable, but coming from Leeson it sticks in my craw.

I think there is something about recieving massive amount of money that makes people massively overconfident. Leeson often recommends that regulators be paid well and I can see the logic. But at the same time I feel that it may be an expression of his hope that he is paid really well to be a regulator:-) How recent is this broadcast?

Deregulatory? Banking is so regulated. They say W. Bush deregulated... there were 50,000 new regulations under the Bush administration. This is all madness. For example calling Free Trade Agreements, as such. There's nothing free trade about them.

the truth is nick is a nice charming very smart street guy but he came into banking as banking tried to modernise and opened its doors up to the street, and street savy kids entered and took advantage, the old school were honourable but the new school had no codex, its not that they didnt know what was going on like nick says its simply they were naive and didnt understand the risk of opening their doors to people who had a different codex or value system. its kind of funny buts its perfectly normal.

Leeson is always made to be the fall guy! But he wasn't the antagonist, he was motivated by the culture and greed which was inherent in the banking system. The bankers wanted the profits, they didn't care how you got it, it was just Leeson was found out and his trades didn't work out. If for instant, Nikki had rallied from 7000 to where it is now, 32,000, at the time when Leeson was making those trades, Leeson would have had a very different career... He took a gamble, the people in charge didn't want to hear no evil, see no evil, nor were they interested as long as they felt they were making money. Leeson should have taken 50:50 blame, I would say, majority of the blame should have been at the Bank senior management who transferred 75% of the bank's capital to a guy in Singapore where nobody cared how he was making money in a prolonged bear market.
