Hi Nick, from your experience and perspective, any idea on what style or system the defender might have practiced? Does he appear to be a door man to you too? Thanks!!
@carlosoviedo58625 жыл бұрын
He probably received military or police training. I've learned those same moves.
@borisboynuzov16624 жыл бұрын
yes the way he hold his arm after the swing and push it up is certianly a militray lock. His holds after that were a little weird though.

It's a very scary situation. But nice reaction against the attacker.
@seppoilmarinen88855 жыл бұрын
Yes, and keep your head at a lowered angle in case he throws a punch with his another hand. You could also stomp on his feet to make him flinch. Then he's an easy target. Don't start wrestling. Deflect the initial attack, grab his arm and start dealing blows as fast as possible. Use your knees to hit his groin and stomach and like I said you can also step on his feet. A lot of people miss that. Once he starts flinching you could also pull a leg sweep on his ankles since he's off balance and bring him on the ground. Don't think too much as Nick said, just start dealing blows as fast and as hard as you can and try to hit where it hurts the most. Just my 2 cents.

Can you get severely injured during the clash ? To be honest you are talking about a specific scenario but in street fighting things might get more serious than that.
@chrismachabee31286 жыл бұрын
Nice Nick. I saw unarmed samurai stop a sword strike, and it looked very similar. i have thought about that technique to stop long range weapons like the bat you display. Only think I would say is it would been great if you had more space and time to really show some of you good effective striking after the initial jam. as a big guy I would expect someone to pick something, a long range weapon is they were going to try and attack me. Watching this video was good to see some modern day technique. The video you had was great. I have been in situations when someone you know well attacks you. They are completely unsuccessful, but you don't trash them, that is, hurt them as bad as you could. In that video there were no strikes. The attacker was smashed into the car and that took whole lot of steam out of him. I couldn't see exactly how he choked him out. I would say that the defender used only the necessary force to, as you say, to neutralize his attacker. Great vid Nick. Thx good show.

What do you think about training doing the enter with the elbow vertical, so that you do not create an angle with it in case you miss the bat? Also, thoughts on steping in to the side of the bat so you jam it, or the side of the other arm so you avoid the force?
@NickDrossos6 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean.
@shinwook51456 жыл бұрын
I mean, when the entry is done, I think that keeping the elbow aligned down (the hand will then be vertical with pinky down) would make, in case the bat hits slightly the arm by mistake, a safer option (than keeping it horizontal (hand horizontal is it then)); 1 The bat would hit flesh, not bone. 2 The elbow won't make an angle (so the bat can slide along the arm more easily) You are entering towards the armed arm, jamming the arm with the bat (which is what I normally do), now, the man on the video is entering towards the side of the unarmed arm, avoiding it, which I hadn't see before.

However weird it may sound: The safest place to be, when you are attacked like this, is between the attacker and the weapon. That is, on the inside. It takes massive cohones to go there, and there is zero time to dwell on the decision. What I would do differently though, is to avoid blocking hard - at least as long as there is momentum in the weapon. A "stiff" weapon like a bat or baton behaves very differently from a bicycle chain for example, and you wouldn't like that being stopped in an instant just to wrap like a whip around your head.

After deflecting the blow, my instinct would be to palm heel w/ osoto gari, but that is because I am a judo guy. Anyway, good use of that excellent video of a real bat attack.

What i dont like about this method is if you time your entry wrong or the batter does the baseball fake waiting for you to move in then steps and swings and your timing is off your dead meat but if i was going to have to move in in this situation i would wedge into his shoulder destroying his AC joint as that will also spin him around and that arm holding the bat will be useless

Nick Drossos you confuse the hell out of me. I first watched one of your videos a couple of days ago. In that video you asserted that the technique the guy in this video used wouldn't work in a real fight. Incidentally, he didn't use arms to block the attackers bat arm.

Great video as always Nick - love Helen's input in other videos too from the female perspective. With the recent fully justified outrage over Harvey Weinstein's conduct in Hollywood, female survival skills become ever more important. Slightly worried by the response of the fantastic actress Michelle Yeoh. I think she has martial arts belts of high standing but started out as a budding ballerina. When an interviewer asked her what she would do if confronted by Weinstein she said she would quote 'use her gong fu training on him'. This angered me somewhat. There still seems to be the impression that if you have some special 'art' training, even as an actress, you are somehow bulletproof in daily situations. With the exception of MMA training which covers the necessary broad skill base, nothing else could be further from the truth. In fact it may give people a false sense of security. Weinstein is a massive, fat guy and is physically imposing and wouldn't likely give time or room for drills / sequences. I felt like shouting 'WATCH NICK DROSSOS!' That misplaced bravado sets a bad example for young people, especially women under sexual attack. Keep up the good work, much needed.

DRIVE THE ATTACKERS HEAD INTO TO WINDOW, WALL, POLL, BUT DO NOT WRESTLE WITH HIM THIS IS TOO DANDEROUS. TAKE HIM OUT.
