In August of 2015, Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 returned to Allentown, PA for the first time since 1988 when she was the main attraction of the NRHS convention in New Jersey. Pulling 2 days of Allentown to Pittston excursions, this was the first time she ran through the Lehigh River Gorge and passed through Jim Thorpe, PA (formerly Mauch Chunk) on the former Jersey Central & Lehigh Valley mainlines.
Using a combination of Norfolk Southern and Reading & Northern trackage, 765 tackled this mountainous line unassisted, putting on a spectacular show in the process and retracing some of the famed excursions sister engine #759 pulled in the 60s and 70s for the High Iron Co.

Steam locomotives just have a certain gravitas to them that can't be matched by any other locomotive type. Henry David Thoreau described them as "a species worthy of inhabiting it (the earth). Thoreau was essentially a 19th century hippy. If a steam locomotive could impress him, then there definitely is something to them.

From a steam standpoint I wouldn’t consider 765 old. Only built in 1944. Not many large engines left in existence built after and most of the big 3 steam builders only built locomotives for another 5 years or so save for a few isolated orders.

Nice footage! Particularly enjoyed the "duelling whistles". Best of all though was the fact that the engine was allowed to haul the train without diesels. Of course, you can now expect a whole load of comments like "but how DANGEROUS is that without diesel dynamic braking!" and various equally crap remarks, such as are posted by any fan of UP 844 trips.
@FanRailer

+struck2soon haha; 611 managed fine without a diesel; what makes people think that 765 would be any different?
@southwestvirginiarailfan729
@southwestvirginiarailfan729 7 жыл бұрын
struck2soon I believe they run with end of train devices as well, so if the air brakes are blocked i some way that little box can apply them from the back bringing the train to a halt, eventually.
@nigelterry9299
@nigelterry9299 6 жыл бұрын
At least you got air brakes. Many locos in the UK have vacuum brakes which are not as good and yet steam specials over here run at 75mph with vacuum brakes. Who needs boxes anyway? These locos have the power and they are designed to pull and stop heavier trains than this!!!!

Nickel Plate Road 765 is another beautiful steam locomotive of seeing in operation as we all know now. I did know that not only that 765 and five of the other NKP 2-8-4’s were preserved today, there were two other 2-8-4’s that were originally going to preserved too. Those were 802 and 810 which were unfortunately scrapped. They could’ve been displayed at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri and the Mid-Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom, Wisconsin.

I wish more of the tourist railroads would have their original coal-burning steam locomotives. I can only think of a few tourist railroads that had their original locos, Nevada Northern, the narrow gauge in Maine, the EBT, and the narrow gauge roads in Colorado which should be joined up and re-named "Rio Grande" once again. Anybody know how many tourist railroads in the United States use their original coal-burning steam lcomotives? There may be more I don't know about.
