Before I got my first flock of laying hens, I was looking around for supplies, and I was truly shocked at the price of feeders and waterers. They really don't seem like they should be that much but they are. And the bigger they get, the crazier the price gets!

You are right! The cost of supplies is significant, & yes, the bigger the capacity, the bigger the price tag. Necessary & important items, for sure, but definitely a significant production cost, & it adds up quickly when they're needed in multiples or large quantities. Thanks very much for watching & commenting, & thank you for sharing your feedback & experience! We appreciate it. God bless y'all, Tina!

What research did you do to sell? I'm curious up here in southern Michigan. We did 100 Meat chickens last year, we are currently doing 30 meat Turkeys and going to pick up our next 100 meat chickens for this year. We used every piece of the chicken minus feet , head and feathers. We made our own dog food with hearts, livers, gizzards. Good luck with your 400+.

Hi! This is Melissa at Twin Oaks Family Farm/Twin Oaks Farm Poultry. Thanks so much for watching & commenting. Thank you for the awesome feedback & for posting a great question! We appreciate it! We initially researched federal, state, & local regulations on poultry sales. We just utilized online search engines for research & started with studying the Federal Poultry Products Inspection Act. For our state, we also studied Ohio Revised Code for any agricultural, food production, & food sales policies. I read up on Ohio Department of Agriculture resources & information, & I looked up policies set by the local (county) health department. In the process, I found it very interesting to read about the history of how federal inspection & commercial processing came to be the regular operating methods & accepted norms for poultry. It wasn't always this way, & basically a different set of policies seems to apply to other production agriculture livestock species. Primarily the difference is that the states basically have jurisdiction for legislation regarding meat sales in other farm animal species, while jurisdiction for legislation of poultry sales is really at the federal level. Interesting! I hope this reply is helpful. That Federal Poultry Products Inspection Act basically says all poultry being sold for human consumption should be inspected, but it also outlines specific exemptions from inspection requirements & quantity thresholds for the exemptions to apply & specific limitations on sales of non-inspected poultry. Studying that act is very informative. I found it very interesting. I also think looking for some videos presented by Joel Salatin is very helpful. His explanations & observations are very interesting & informative. Good luck with your meat birds & turkeys. We've never raised turkeys. I'd love to try to do that one day. Do you plan to offer whole turkeys for sale? I would love it if you'd update us on your turkeys occasionally if you get an opportunity to do so. Great job with your resourcefulness on using everything possible from the chickens. You might consider saving the feet, & they can be frozen. One awesome way to use those is thaw them out & dehydrate them until there's no give to them ("low & slow" to the tune of about 158 degrees F for approximately 72 hours) & use them for dog treats or chews...we cut the toenails off prior to drying the chicken feet. Our dogs love them, & we have loyal chicken feet clients that get chicken feet for their dogs. The feet can be purchased frozen if clients want to dehydrate the feet themselves; we also have clients that prefer to buy the chicken feet already dehydrated. Great source of collagen, glucosamine, & chondroitin for dogs...good for their joint health & oral health. It might be a way you could use up the feet, too. Thank you again for watching & commenting! We appreciate it! God bless you & have a wonderful weekend!

Oh, also, I was going to mention I have read of people somehow managing to keep the feathers to market those either for stuffing material or as artistic material. It seems like it would be pretty tedious to try to save the feathers, but I was intrigued by that idea. Wanted to pass that along to you. 😊

@twinoaksfarmpoultry Thank you for the information, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I will get busy reading and watching. We made the mistake of getting all male turkeys. The males will average about 60 pounds, which is a gigantic Thanksgiving dinner. We also invested in the Turkey tumbler to fit that size for defeathering. Great information on the feet as we also purchased a professional dehydrator for all the jerkies. Chicken, turkey and deer, maybe beef🤷‍♀️. Thank you again. I will keep you updated
