UFOs live album 'Strangers In The Night' is the best live album of all time IMO with the best guitar playing put down on record.

Agreed. This is one of the few cases where I would recommend a live version of almost any song from Strangers in the Night over the studio versions. Every guitar solo is pure fire! Arguably the greatest live album of all time. Someone should react to the entire live album (hint, hint) 😁

Thanks so much for the shout out and finally getting back to the legendary UFO, they were so important to everyone I hung out with back in the 70s and 80s, they have a treasure trove of awesome music, especially when Michael Schenker and later, Paul Chapman were on lead guitar, they were absolute fire. Next try Lights Out, This Kids or Rock Bottom, they are studio classics but the definitive versions are on Strangers in the Night Live. They are at their peak on that album and you will be amazed at the musical magic on display. Thanks again for taking a shot at such underrated but important music in the history of hard rock and heavy metal, the were there when things really got going and we are all better off for it. Enjoy! 🎸

Doctor Doctor did get some airplay on college and hard rock radio back in the day and is a nice intro but as you will see in time, they have much more hard hitting, advanced and epic songs for you to enjoy. I look forward to hearing them as time permits. I envy you guys, hearing all this great music for the first time...

Rock Bottom should be next -- you will get a heavy dose of Michael Schenker goodness. -- Yes, Michael Schenker left Scorpions to form UFO. He was replaced in Scorpions by Uli Jon Roth, and the band remained heavy for several years (Sails of Charon, Virgin Killer). When Uli Jon Roth was replaced by Mattias Jabs, Scorpions became much more commercial, but remained very heavy until about 1985 or so. UFO never got huge - IMO, vocalist Phil Mogg is great, but he avoided hard rock clichés in his vocal delivery. Their Strangers in the Night live album from 1979 is lauded as one of the finest live rock albums ever.

Definitely a good UFO song. UFO was an influence on Iron Maiden. Doctor Doctor is what Iron Maiden uses as their entrance music before they go on stage. Bassist Steve Harris named "Love to Love, from UFO''s 1979 album "Strangers in the Night , as one of the eight songs that changed his life. He explained, "UFO have loads of great songs, and loads of great albums, but this version in particular, on "Strangers in the Night", really struck a nerve with me. It's the light and shade and the dynamic build-up which does it for me.

Glad you enjoyed it guys, but the live version on Strangers in the Night will just blow you away. One of the greatest intros ever. Saw UFO at Hammersmith Odeon a few times. The ever popular boogie bass line gets everybody onboard and was very common in the early 70s along with a blues influence in some of the bands. In any era, there's always musicians borrowing aspects from the past.

UFO (from England) influenced many hard rock and heavy metal bands through the years. Their live album: Strangers in the Night is frequently considered one of the best if not the best hard rock albums of all time. Songs like Rock Bottom, Lights Out, Too Hot to Handle, and Only You Can Rock me are killer tracks!

UFO were primarily a hard rock band, but they did delve into mellower stuff too. Rock Bottom, Lights Out and Too Hot To Handle (studio versions) are other rockers by UFO you should check out. Crystal Light is an excellent mellower tune by them. The guitarist is Michael Schenker. UFO were from the UK.

FYI, UFO had one guitarist, Michael Schenker, who did play on The Scorpions first album with his brother Rudy. The other members in UFO were British. Some future song suggestions: Lights out, Too hot to handle, Natural thing, This kids, and Rock bottom, the live version is a must listen, for the guitar playing alone. Michael Schenker was one of the best guitarists of that era.

UFO is an English band. "Phenomenon" was their 3rd album. Other popular songs by UFO include: "Rock Bottom", "Natural Thing", "Lights Out", "Too Hot to Handle" and "Only You Can Rock Me". Iron Maiden have named UFO as one of the influences on their sound. Fortunately for me, as a teenager during the 1970's, I was introduced to UFO by KSHE 94.7 FM in St. Louis, Missouri. Critics consider UFO as one of the artists that were the transition between hard rock and heavy metal. By the way, the term "heavy metal' DID exist during the early- and mid-1970's, and was being applied to groups like Black Sabbath, Atomic Rooster, Bloodrock, and even Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.

When this was released as a single in the UK in 1974 we tried so hard to get this away into the charts - but although people loved to dance to it in discos, for some reason it never sold enough to show up! Such a shame. When it was re-issued in 1979 it did - just about - get into the UK top 40. It deserved much better.

This features the legendary guitarist Michael Schenker (his personality is not so legendary, but that's another story), who is also famous for his time in the Scorpions, and his own band MSG. If you go to a Maiden concert you'll hear this just before they take the stage, they've been doing that for decades. They also did a cover of this when Blaze was the singer. Turn up the distortion on the guitar and make the drum louder and you have metal. About the Scorpions, Michael left after the first album, but Uli Roth took his place, their music from that period is well worth checking out. Not standard metal with power ballads like they became in the 80's. More blues oriented (because of Uli Roth), and not what you woudl expect. The album with Michael in '72 is actually more psychadelic.

Yes, sometimes there are strange combinations; I guess "made" by record companies ... I once saw a german poprock band named Wallenstein open for Scorpions. Some real bad Scorpions fans had brought raw eggs to throw them at Wallenstein, some ended at the bassdrum ... at first I thought it's funny, but then I felt bad for Wallenstein, I guess, they really didn't want to be there 😞

Okay did a little checking to jog my memory. Lex may have thought light rock because Love to Love is a ballad and has strings but also does get heavy. I loved Lights Out as a kid but the strings kind of made it over produced. Too Hot to Handle and Lights Out (the song) are great because they both have 2 solos, at the middle and at the end of each song. I also really like Electric Phase from that album and how it drifts into Love to Love. Now, the album Force It also has many great songs, 5 of which are on the Live album. I also found out that 2 songs on Force It were co-written by Michael and Rudolf Schenker + Phil Mogg. That being said, from Force It, I choose track #1, Let It Roll for a #nicknlexrequest. The guitar sound has such an awesome reverb. Michael's wide vibrato on notes was something quite unique.

Love UFO but did not get exposed to the early work until Too Hot to Handle broke the FM airwaves. Lights Out, Obsession, Strangers in the Night... that's the UFO super arc. Even after Michael left and Paul Champman came in, UFO continued to write really decent songs into the early-mid 80s. You think you're listening to hard rock, then WHAM here come this melody. Hard songs, soft tunes. Always felt they were reaching for something, but didn't quite garner the success they deserved. A working band for sure. Saw them live 3 times too. I have to be honest. There were a couple of bands' shows I attended, and I remember thinking, "I don't need to be here". Not with UFO, baby! An excellent live band.

The band walked out to sign autographs and you would have thought it was the Beatles had walked. I arrived early and a sweet spot in front. Good show from what I can recall. But I don't recommend free shows. Just plain nuts. I'm more than happy to pay for the seat.

I would love the whole 'Obsession' 1978 album. My library has that and Too Hot to Handle & Lights Out from 'Lights Out' 1977 album

LOL! UFO is definitely hard rock. And, Rock Bottom is their most popular song. Doctor Doctor is kind of easy compared to most of their songs.

I'm not familiar with UFO at all so I thought I'd give it a go. Pretty good. Not really in my current taste (tastes change, and recur, over time), but thanks to you folks, I'll dig into their catalogue.
