Italy had in the 70ies and has still today a huge reservoir of great prog bands. The best known are probably 'Banco del Mutuo Soccorso' and Premiata Forneria Maconi (PFM). By the way: The breakthrough for PFM came as a support band for Deep Purple. Greg Lake (ELP) saw the concert, was thrilled and signed the band for Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Manticore label. But for now I would like to draw your attention to another great italian Prog Band from the 70ies, namely LE ORME. Their best-known work is "Felona + Sorona". If somebody wants to know what Italian symphonic prog was, this conceptual album is the perfect definition. One of the best ever. This Album captivates the listener from the first second. Sometimes pompous, sometimes soft, and always emotive. Lots of keyboards, powerful drums, magnificent bass and impressive clear voice conforming a really beautiful work. My request for a reaction from you would be "Sospesi Nell'Incredibile", the album opener OR "Ritorno Al Nulla", the last track. Words can't describe such beauty - a true masterpiece! So thanks for your great Videos for me always a great pleasure!

Yes, two distinctly different versions of this album exist: 1) "Felona E Sorona" the original Italian language version 2) "Felona & Sorona" the partly re-recorded version with English lyrics by Peter Hammill from Van der Graaf Generator. In addition, since 2010, a 2-disc release with both versions of the album is on the market. B.t.w.: The Cover Art of this Album is incredibly beautiful!

@@Bilsenkraut One thing the Italians tried to do to appeal to the Engiish speaking world was to re-record songs or albums in English, but I've never heard anything by Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, PFM, Latte E Miele, Maxophone or any other Engish language version that was as good as the original Italian.

Continuate così, Nick e Lex, grandissimo lavoro

more than any other prog band, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso reminds me of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. the structure of the songs tend toward verse + instrumental sections + solos + freak outs. in this song in particular, there's a keyboard riff that sounds very much like Emerson when he was in the Nice. but this takes nothing away from the formidable beauty of Banco!

I'm a bit envious that you guys are such polyglots! Sometimes I curse myself for not associating with my father's family more than I did; my paternal great-grandparents emigrated from Spain at the turn of the 20th century. Although I do remember quite a lot from a child's perspective, I never really became fluent enough to discuss ideas and concepts with them...which I sorely regret. And yet, I still understand 75% of what's spoken and written...alas, my personal conversing skills, not so much. I've been following you two for at least a year, and am expanding into your Latino analyses now. Those analyses are refreshingly mature, sophisticated, and musically insightful. Thank you!

Great reaction, the prog Italian scene of the 70s was incredible (hundreds of great bands). Cool that you picked up on Genesis... they were a huge influence on the Italian scene, in fact early Genesis first charted high in Italy, causing the band to tour there a lot in their early days.

Spot on, you two. When I was 16, we're talking 1975, a group of musician friends introduced me to YES, Genesis, Banco, ELP, etc all in the same year. Italy, France, Germany, all had their correlates to the British groups yet with their own unique sound to their nationality. The thing with Banco is their cinematic approach which explains how in later years the main composers were asked to do movie sound tracks. The piece you listened to shows their mastery of various genres and theme and variation. Glad you said what you said. They were more progressive than most prog rock bands of that era. One of those groups you just had to know about at the time. This music walks hand in hand with psychedelic culture. As does much of prog. There's beer music and there's acid music. They're different audiences. I mentioned some other Italian groups in the past to you. I'd suggest. Latte Miele, PFM, Area, Le Orme, Atoll

On facebook we did a three year poll including at least one thousand of italian prog albums and hundreds of bands. I don't think anything like this has ever been done and at the end of the three years of voting ( 4 albums every two days) by hundreds and hundreds of users, here are the top twenty positions. Close to each single album the year of release, my personal rating (expressed im max 5 *) and the song that I suggest you listen to if you want to learn more. Three of this album in addition to 5 * got a special mention fm me which I called praise (lode). Great great reaction! I have to confess I am not a musician but I love this music, of course it's not for every moment but the creative "chaos" portrayed is enchanting to me. And the way each instruments underlined the lyrics in the sung part. I have listened to so much music in my life, I am 59 which I guess it's why I like prog music, I just think the variety of instruments, the quality of the music, the melodies, this is almost a symphony than a song and I am glad that young musicians appreaciate it. Well done guys!

Banco - up there with the best - they do have two non-vocal (all instrumental) albums - Garofano Rosso 1976 and Di Terra - 1978. But what sets them apart from most other great prog bands is their unbelievably great fantastic vocalist - the late great Francesco Di Giacomo. Few can belt it out like he can. All of their albums in the 70's are top notch. Le Orme - maybe not quite as progressive as Banco. But also very diverse and rewarding. One similarity is this - what makes Le Orme so unique - so utterly impressive is there vocalist - Aldo Tagliapietra. Completely different type of vocalist to the operatic style of Di Giacomo - but sweet and smooth and so 'singable.' Le Orme has many great albums but I recommend newcomers to start with 'Uomo Di Pezza' which is from 1972. Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) - These three bands are considered Italy's Big 3 (with apologies to the more experimental band Area) - PFM are a little more close to 'rock music' than either Banco or Le Orme but still incorporate long epic songs as a main part of their routine. A fantastic band in their own right - you can't go wrong with any of their releases during the 70's but I'd start with 'Per Un Amico' - 1972. Other notable Italian prog artists - Area - a truly great band with another late great unmatchable vocalist - Demetrio Stratos. Arti E Mestieri Latte E Miele Sensations Fix Goblin Il Rovescio Della Medaglia Il Balletto Di Bronzo New Trolls Quella Vecchio Locanda Locanda Delle Fate Maxophone Il Picchio Dal Pozzo Museo Rosenbach Osanna Celeste Perigeo And many more - this is just Italy - France, Germany and the rest of the world to follow!

Cool, genuine young couple. I have put in several requests for VdGG the last month or so and have had people agreeing with me but nothing yet and also Nick is a guitarist so guitar-heavy bands like his favorite Dream Theater get the most attention. They have only done two ELP and ONE Gentle Giant song for example. I may have seen Ramon back me up I think and some of our other VdGG family:-) and I guess we will have to just keep asking politely. Don't know who got the ball rolling with JP by requesting Scorched-Earth a while ago but he really liked their ability to be "heavy instead of just being loud" to paraphrase him. There is really no one close to him as far as understanding (HWND) or admitting he doesn't understand certain songs (Lemmings) on first listen. Just check out again how astute his reactions to 'House' and even 'Louse' were. I don't spread praise around very easily but he has a very underrated gift for humor and insight, especially for his age. He deserves many more followers but hasn't gotten them yet because he isn't pay for play. Kind of like PH in that he isn't a sell out for fake popularity. Seems like most of our favorite bands are that way. BTW Meurglys 3 just keeps growing on me more and more. The first section especially is so catchy and dripping with emotion like only PH can do it.

In case you aren't getting the clue from the comments you need to review some PFM songs. They were Italy's premier prog-rock band to my mind. Do the title track from "The World Becomes the World". Or, for a great, long, live cut, do "Alta Loma Five Till Nine" from their album "Cook". I KNOW how you love great guitar. Phenomenal live guitar on this. And everything else. Very few folk have done first reactions to PFM, yet they stood head and shoulders with bands like Gentle Giant, Genesis, King Crimson, and others when it came to '70's prog rock.

First of all I must say that your reactions are very different from the other things you can find on KZfaq, they help to understand and appreciate a song (even if you already knew it very well) in a deeper way. I’m Italian, so it may seem obvious if I say Italian prog rock is a treasure chest for any prog lover...it has a strong symphonic soul but there are also many folk and jazz-rock references (and there is a clear and surprising evolution from 70/71 to the late seventies, where you can also find deviations in chamber music, electronic or even sophisticated pop music).

Hi NicknLex I've just seen this video of Banco. I can see that both you have an open mind to music from other countries. I'll make this short and sweet but I have been a rock fan since the age of 14 back in 1976 and have my back catalogue of Ledzep, Sabbath, Purple, Rush, Budgie, Hawkwind, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc etc etc and have a wide range of rock and progressive interest going back to the 60s and 70s which never hit the big time time due to the popularity of some of the bands I've already mentioned. Back at some point in the mid 90s I fell in love with the artist and band Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree whom I believe to be a musical genius whom I could literally opine about endlessly but now is not the time. Over the last 5 years I have delved into Italian Prog and believe you me there are some ecstatic sounds and bands to be heard. Like Banco's Darwin and the album you've just covered, check out L'Orme's Felona e Sorona, PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi's Per Un Amico and there are many others. However I must draw your attention to a relatively modern Italian prog band called Il Baccio Della Medusa (Medusa's Kiss) whose album Discesa Agl'Inferi D'Un Giovane Amante (Descent Into The Underworld Of A Young Lover) you must really review as a must. I guarantee you will love the ride!

Since you're both fluent in Spanish I have a song for you. It's about three minutes and it's sung a capella but it's a track called "Llorando" by Rebecca Del Rio and it's a stunner. It's her take on the Roy Orbison song "Crying". How any9ne can pack so much emotion in such a short song is amazing to me. Also, there's a French singer who was popular in the 60s named Francoise Hardy who deserves to be checked out.

English translation: “These days it is certainly autumn down at our house, sweet Martha, my Martha. I remember the hay and your Normandy horses, we were free, free. On the wall pictures dripping with moisture, stains without freedom, listen to me Marta, in this strange autumn your horses scream, they scream chained by now. What to say, suffocate, shut up ... why? Prisoner for the idea, my idea ... why? Far is the path that I have chosen for myself where everything is worthy of attention because it lives, because it is true, it lives the truth. At least you who can escape via nomadic song this jail is full of my despair, you who can not get caught. You condemn for convenience, but my idea already assaults you. You torture my flesh alone, but my brain still lives ... still. Lamentations of guitars wrongly suspected, sigh softly, and you haughty-eyed women mouths like pomegranate, do not cry because I was born, born free, free. Don't waste a requiem mass on me, I was born free.”

The video I sent a link to might only have 700 views, but I was looking for a link with the song by itself in HD. They were actually fairly popular, certainly in Italy, and they're well known in the world of 70's progressive rock fans, even if they aren't known in the wider world the way Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, etc. are. Their first 3 albums are all incredible - Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, Darwin! and Io Sono Nato Libero - all incredible all the way through. And then there's Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) & Le Orme (the other 2 biggest 70's Italian prog bands), plus Quella Vecchia Locanda, Area, Il Rovescio Della Medaglia, Locanda Delle Fate, Semiramis, Latte E Miele, Celeste, Museo Rosenbach, etc. And don't even get me started on French prog, German krautrock and great, great albums from so many other European & Eastern European countries. Let me know if you want very specific recommendations as I've been listening to this music forever.

@ 8:28 . . . Everyone has to start with training wheels to ride the bike, then are used to riding it, and then they have to have the ultimate bike to ride ;). It will be cool to see the on-going transformation with Lex and you too Nick, as Opeth (and other bands) will get you into some extreme (but not the over the top bands "lyrically" with the gory/horror themes) Metal bands like Meshuggah (hint hint) and so on, and possibly get used to the harsh vocal styles. Lots of people mentioning "Le Orme" which I think has a lot of ELP influences. The Progressive Rock journey is just starting! - Another cool reaction from you guys :D. Note: I'm glad Lex said "an ear" of musicality. You don't necessarily have to be a "musician", but a _want_ to dive right into this type of music. But no, this isn't for the average radio listener, unless they were WEIRD like me who wanted more than what FM radio stopped featuring around the 90's. Progressive Rock and Underground Metal is the _antithesis_ of Pop/Top 40 type of music. I mean, how many people do reactions to Banco??? Awesome guys!

What year is this? No harmony? Surprised. I would think they would be all over harmony, but perhaps they listened to Gabriel and Collins for inspiration. Love the occasional Porcupine Tree feel. Can even hear some Yes. That break into frenzied disonnence and building rifts with percussion/tablas and acoustical guitars is quiet cool. Very Spanish feel. Multa Bella.

It is a kind of "Innuendo" ante-litteram. or rather A protest song dedicated to all unjustly detained political prisoners. And the matter, in the early '70s, was damned current in Europe (Ireland, Italy, Greece, Germany, Eastern Europe) as in Spain, Pourtugal, South America, Africa and the Middle East ... in fact, the musical scenarios are felt as a sort of world musical journey of "free" and "nomadic" ideas such as the song of this political prisoner.

'canto nomade per un prigioniero politico' is a track inherent to Pinochet oppression in Chile when he killed Allende in 1973. The considerations expressed in the lyrics belong to a political prisoner waiting to be tortured once again and above all waiting for death as the last hope of ending the nightmare. These are powerful words in a literally incredible piece of art belonging to one of the best records in the history of world prog.

i like dream theater and prog rock in general but sometimes they sound busy just for the sake of busy, not for the sake of music. just busy because i can, not because it follows the music sequence naturally. banco is busy with a musical purpose. sometimes prog bands don’t know when to stop and they overdo it…. sometimes too much hurts the music. sometimes it is musical. anyway, this is a subjective matter.
