The O'Kellys

2 жыл бұрын

Our onboard meteorologist keeps a weather eye to the sky and makes a prediction based on the clouds. Plus, it looks like Hurricane season is almost over, but that means the first cold fronts are arriving. There are so many anchorages in the Chesapeake to seek shelter from a storm, but with our anchor not setting and the storm approaching, we got down to the wire on this one.

Hello O'Kelly's from Alberta Canada. This episode is exactly the reason I look forward to Thursdays. Its just plain comfortable watching your channel, has everything I enjoy in a KZfaq channel and nothing I don't. I'm not a coffee person but can appreciate your entrepreneurial spirit (good luck with it), who doesn't love taco's and today's humor was off the charts. There has to be at least 5 to 10 years more years of use in Nick's shirt, "I'll take a year to think about it" exactly. You are a sailing channel with other pursuits. Thanks for allowing us to join you. See you next Thursday.

I so understand Nick talking about his grey Shirt. My wife always pesters me when I wear decent clothing while doing the garden, repairing stuff or repairing stuff in the house. So I always try to change to old ragged clothing to do the work. This way, nothing happens when You spill something, clean your fingers on a sweater in the middle of a gearbox disassembly or some paint lands where it shouldn't. Of course, this leads to my work clothes being somewhat... battle hardened and bruised. But, so what?

Nick - I feel ya on the t-shirt man! They age like fine wine and feel so damn good. None of that newness “what, who are you?” feeling, and all of the stiffness is gone, cause there ain't much left, but they're hanging in there for you... I'm sad to report my daughter has discovered my stash and uses them as PJ tops, and she's converted my wife 😢. Stand in solidarity with the rest of us men worldwide.

I was in the coffee and tea business for over 40 years. Amongst coffees, the Full City or medium roast displays the most flavor. Dark roasts hide flavor. As well, gourmet coffee drinkers always seem to come back to the Ethiopian and gourmet tea drinkers most certainly focus on Darjeelings.

In Norway the old sailors have a saying regarding the weather, not sure how much truth it holds but here we go! Fire red sky at sunset and tomorrow will be a sunny delight, but if the sunrise is fire red the afternoon will be rainy! I believe I remember hearing something simular while I was living in England, something something shepherd's delight....can't remember quite how it goes.

I know it's a PIA, but for the muddy mud mud mud -- switch to an oversized fortress anchor. keep it disassembled down below, and just swap it out when you are in the flats. they are marginal in most conditions -- but for mud, nothing else comes close. and since they are aluminum, it's not like hauling a sharp edged boulder up to the bow.

Really appreciate the weather discussion and time-lapse. It reinforces my desire to take a "Weather watching" class at Texas A&M. Also consider a sentinel/kellet when anchoring. Soft mud just doesn't have any structure to hold an anchor but a sentinel will help if you don't have any other options. It will at least hold the shaft down so the anchor can bury deeper into a denser bottom layer.

Note that WD-40 is not a lubricant, it is more of an astringent. You will probably find the door seizing up again in the near future. A better method is to clean the tracks (WD-40 will do ok for that), wipe thoroughly, let it dry, and apply lithium grease. This is basically the same method for cleaning garage door tracks.

You have done a ton of work for this cruising season. How about getting Meaghan a wash down pump for the anchor chain? Looking forward to your next cruising season! Keep up the great videos. We will be ordering some coffee when we leave Canada and get back to the boat in Florida!

We have a pump on board! Just can't justify it as we are headed south so soon. See you down there! Whoop whoop!

Loved both t-shirt discussion's, I too have had the "No, that is not going to become a rag!" Conversation with my wife a few times. I bought a I Love Taco's t-shirt a while back, and have had the same reaction, I think the shirt connects because it is a universal truth?

In Fashion Design school an Instructor taught me that when you get rid of the old and less effective then it makes room for the new things to come in. It is called the vacuum effect. So anything that doesn't get worn in 1 full season it is designed for goes out. Anything with holes also goes out. Actually, when you are wearing old shirts with holes in them they do something negative to your mind. In a way, it is telling your psyche that you can't afford new things. It is telling your psyche that you lack way too much to have nice clothes.

What nice scenery and a great video. Keep the T-Shirt!! There is nothing wrong with it. 🙂 I didn't know you are a meteorologist. I am a "trained spotter" and a pilot. The weather is my hobby you might say. And I am taking the advanced spotter course as soon as the offer it. Thank you and be safe.

@@TheOKellys Sweet! If I had to do school again it would be Atmospheric like you or Astronomy. Its amazing how as I get old I am see where I could have done better, sometimes much better, and wonder how could I be so dumb. I thought I was smart at the time, but in reality not so much. Thank you.

Hearing you, mine throws my painting and boat fixing-casual-wear out, plenty of life left in them and then complains when I get more paint, glue, oil, epoxy on other clothes, answer here I feel is pretty predictable

LOL Him: "It's some good coffee weather here" Her: "Woohoo!" (thumbs up) Spot the girl who just drank some extra-dank coffee! :D I mean, who reacts that way to such weather? People with the right coffee, evidently. :D I think that little vignette was the best advertisement for the coffee.

Oh my, Crabb Creek - vivid memory. I, well we were delivering a small B40 Hinckley from The Motherhouse in Maine to Crabb Creek. We were warned AND the owners were on the pier watching. At high tide we ran aground, twice. We eventually tied the dinghy on the end of the boom, pushed the boom out until we healed enough to pass through. Owner was impressed, used the trick a couple of times until he decided to move his precious boat to a deeper water cove. Just thought of that when I watched you hold your breath there for a moment.

Great videos. As a leopard 45 owner I love all the tips and general info your sharing. An you tell me where you got your davits? I still have the old pole system, anoying and dinghy always in the way.

Hey Ben, this boat was built with these davits. I think there is a pair down at Sailorman. Give them a call. Came off a sistership. Surprised you want to change yours out...most folks want that style now.

I still have my first piece of merino wool I ever bought. It’s an Icebreaker fleece. It’s been through two rounds of repairs and has elbow patches now. Going on 13 years, it’s still my go to camping and skiing fleece. I WILL NOT RETIRE IT!
