And DICK PAGE goes OFF! I've been needing a fix. I liked his shiny shirt too. The trolls and keyboard warriors have been crawling out of the woodwork a lot recently. I've decided to just instantly ban them as their negativity is just poison. Only the brave create.

Nick! Oh, Nick. Geeze. Today, I spoke with FLM to figure the right tripod for me, especially in view of your observations. Then, today, on the phone with FLM, I sang your or praises as a guy who is huge to us but also massively huge to THEM. You are seriously a genuinely special talent. Glad to know you're close! Tacoma here. Be well. Be safe, and you are a gift. Please keep doing what you are doing. Best.

Re: pursuing photography full time: I personally hate my day job... it's not horrible by any stretch, but I've been doing it for 15 years, not because I love it, but because I'm good at it, and I painted myself into a corner by getting into a field because I needed the money rather than the love of what I do. That said, it pays well, and it allows me to pursue photography as a very intense hobby. I'd love to turn pro someday, but I'm an extreme introvert, so getting out in front of people and doing weddings, or portraits, and such is probably never going to happen for me. It sucks, but I'm slowly becoming at peace with the fact I'll never do this pro. If I can sell some of my work and bring a few extra bucks in every month I think I'd be happy at this point.
@robroyig-robroyphotography92254 жыл бұрын
John, I completely agree and sympathize with you. I love this as a hobby, as a passion, and if I could sell a calendar here, some shots there, to cover cost of gear...that's great in my book. So you aren't alone. I couldn't do weddings or portraits either. That's why I love landscapes and wildlife....they don't talk back and they're fine if I am silent :-). Thanks for sharing!

photography is like learning the piano. a great instrument can make beautiful music with the right artist. for newbies and hobbyists, only with time and practice will the music will come. and you do make beautiful music with your gear and your heart. and thanks for all the tasty nuggets this time and throughout the years.

Nick, another great video both thought provoking and informative. You have a very rare ability to connect with the viewer in an intensely human and personal way. I often find myself feeling as if I'm sitting across from you in your living room. As for being a Professional Photographer, some years ago there was a book published with a title that suggested that Do What You Love And The Money Will Follow was a workable idea. The author should be sued for false advertising. In my experience doing what I loved for a living often led to burnout. I was a semi successful photojournalist for ten years and believe me the money had a very hard time finding let alone following me! While I still shoot professionally I really now consider myself a hobby photographer in that rather than having to shoot what will sell I can really focus on what interests me! For all you folks out there who daydream about becoming a "Pro" there is no reason whatever that not earning a living as a photographer limits you from developing professional level skills. To the contrary your amateur status conveys upon you a freedom that most professional photographers envy. So use that freedom wisely always knowing that the "Pros" out there would kill to have it!

I think the fact that you so openly state how you're affected by creative ruts & the constant pressure to create even when nor motivated is, in itself, motivation for us fans/followers. Everyone experiences ups and downs & makes excuses to not do things. Nick, really awesome information in this QA. I too feel the same way about instagram; not my favorite for photography. I loved hearing your insight about how it's really like trying to balance family with photography compared to pro's who really succeed in the field since they have no obligations to family. I think most of us struggle to find time when we work full time jobs and to also put time to go out and shoot + put time for family. It's nearly impossible honestly. Lastly, forget the negative trolls and do what you love to do. I really love to see you, Gavin, Adam and Thomas all together in videos. Keep doing what you love and thank you!

Nick, You are a great teacher, and also very interesting to listen to. Funny at times. I have no doubt given the opportunity you’d take a fantastic shot. Keep on keeping on Nick! Love your channel. Great stuff Nick, I read that mean comment you put up and all I can say is how miserable that person’s life must be to take the time to type out something like that. You might like Paramo waterproofs, you don’t see any moisture build up at all and I believe they work in a way that animal fur does transporting moisture from inside to out using your body movement. Have been a game changer for me as they don’t have that crisp packet goretex feel and super comfortable. Thanks again for all the great content you put out, you’re very knowledgeable and produce amazing work without having an ego.

Great vid Nick. Love the transparency of your answers here. At 30:25 I have people walk into my shot and they usually say, "sorry, am I in your shot?" My response is, "you have every right to that spot that I do. Don't worry about it". Then they look at me surprised and usually rush to move. I'm guessing if I approach it with attitude of entitlement, people may stay in "my shot" longer.

I’ve been in the creative industries all my life and taking a step away is absolutely vital for good mental health. I found myself, several years ago, with severe anxiety and depression all connected with work because I wasn’t giving myself that space away from it. The best suggestions I had given to me included batching content so that there was always something ready to go out and I could take time for myself when I needed it. The other thing, although this is much more difficult, is to find a hobby away from your work. I know, without that, I would have felt ever more pressure to keep working. With me, it’s Minecraft but anything out there that takes you out of that work mentality is a great option for you. I love your stuff and I realise you aren’t achieving what you want to do in your own photography, Nick, but I hope you also realise that you are an inspiration to those of us who watch your channel and that, Even though you can keep pushing yourself, growth will always decrease as your experience increases. That doesn’t make you a bad photographer or make your pictures any less worthwhile than they otherwise would’ve been.

Hi Nick. Love your work mate. Great to hear you talking honestly and showing your vulnerability. Interesting point about doing what you love for a job and how it can impact on you personally and on your time and enjoyment of the subject. Interesting as well when you struggle to find time to improve/expand your own photography through the pressures on you to produce vlogs, etc. You’ve probably thought about this, but how about using some of the time to experiment but then doing vlogs on the new techniques so we can see you learn and make mistakes at the same time as trying new things. Just a thought 🤔

Nick, As far as a "plateau" being reached, maybe just take-a-breath. I find that will help me reset my compass. You have a great roll with considerable momentum, and I think those characteristics should allow you to coast when you need to. You are in rare company for creative photographers whose images I can call-up in my mind when I want to learn from a technique exhibited in work I've seen. You, Adam Gibbs, and Simon Baxter are the top three as far as the biggest influences in my learning curve. I've been shooting (professionally) since 1974, so I'm not without credentials and I like to think I know what I'm doing when I critique an image for purposes of my own learning. So, never underestimate your power and remember to curate your talent. Thank-You, Mike

Nick, I'm not going to forget you. Your work is amazing!!! Don't listen to the negative comments. I think some people get their jollies from just being negative. It's their nature. I appreciate your advice and instruction. It is very kind of you to share with us your knowledge and experience. I know I mentioned Capture One to you and I appreciate you looking at it but guess what? I'm now looking at On1 Raw. I think for pet photography it's going to be a better choice. Removing leashes is a huge thing for me. I like the idea of getting multiple images in as layers in On1 Raw. I know Tamara Lackey uses it. I do love to do landscape as a way of relaxing. It's so good to be outside. I guess that's my little escape. Anyway, as a side note, I did ask someone to move out of my shot. I got there when no one was there and set up my tripod etc. Then this lady came along with her point and shoot to take pics of the sunset which was happening. I was polite and waited for her to take quite a number of shots. I finally went up to her politely and asked her if I can take my shots before the sun is down. She turned around saw my tripod and felt embarrassed that she walked in front of me. She was very nice. I finally managed to get a couple of shots. It's always good to be respectful and nice.
