I understand your misgivings, but there’s the intangible factor that having a nice thing in our collection can be a pleasant reminder of something accomplished. Just my 2 cents.

I fairly recently had those feelings with knives. Ever since I got a certain little orange slip joint I became aware that I didn't need overbuilt built or tactical. At the end of day its a knife and it cuts things close to the way you mention its a watch and it tells time. You can still appreciate the craftsmanship and art function of the higher end stuff but sometimes you have that moment of "Do I need this?" Love the videos. I have 2 solar world time Gshocks and you have my word I will not get into watches.

Excellent video. When it comes to watches, I really struggle with the balance between horological pedigree vs. the strong influence of the jewelry/status world. I'm a simple t-shirt and jeans kinda guy, so I couldn't care less about jewelry. Actually, I guess it's not entirely accurate to say I "don't care" , as one of the reasons I say I don't care is that I'd also feel extremely awkward wearing expensive jewelry even if I could afford it, for many of the same reasons you mentioned. The struggle, though, is that I really do think all the horological technology is super cool and fascinating. I am also 100% interested in the "tool" aspect of watches, as the convenience of just being able to glance at your wrist to quickly check the time will always be worlds better than fishing out and powering on a phone. The part that bums me out is that the "status" crowd seems to be driving the market, as increasingly, it seems that more and more "average" people actually are satisfied with checking the time on their phone, or are more interested in a smart device like an Apple Watch or Fitbit. So, obviously, the super-expensive watches are probably much more profitable for the top-tier manufacturers since modest watches likely aren't moving in the quantities they used to. Business 101, if you're selling something inexpensive, you need to sell a ton of it, right? This makes me worry that the "good enough" mechanical watches in the affordable price segment may become a dying breed and all we'll be left with is a choice between super cheap "fashion watches" or car-priced status jewelry for the 1%. Not saying it will be that extreme anytime soon, but I do feel like the trend is beginning when I see things like every new Seiko release being priced significantly more expensive than the last one without a corresponding jump in tech or materials. (And unlike most other consumer technologies, I'm not holding my breath on seeing Spring Drive movements trickle down to the SKX price range any time soon, whether it would be economically feasible to ever produce or not. Of course I'm not saying making a less expensive Spring Drive is exactly the same as Intel selling last generation's CPU chips at half the price...but I also don't believe the watch industry has linear profit margins. Watches aren't priced based on what they cost to produce, they're clearly priced based on what the market will bear. )

I understand the internal conflict completely. I'm in the same situation with my Speedmaster Professional. I saved up for a long time to pay what is big sum of money in my world. I really like the watch. However lately i have had the same discomfort of wearing something so valueable, returning to my trusty Citizen Promaster. I have not yet decidede to sell it or not, but I could definitely put that money to use elsewhere on something more sensible. Then again, luxury watches aren't sensible are they?

Nick you seem to be looking for reasons of not wanting to own this beautiful piece instead of just enjoying the feeling of wearing something nice and that feeling a little bit special because of it. You've obviously earned it so enjoy it without the guilt. I have a SMPc I feel nice wearing, it's not shouty in your face but I know I've got it on and the exact Planet Ocean you have here is going to be my next and only other expensive treat to myself and I'll love wearing that too. Nick, I enjoyed the conscious perspective in this video, and it would be easy for me as a guy collecting mechanical watches for 10+ years to say "you don't get it" or "this is your problem...," But I think that would be reductive and missing the point of this video. In my experience, the gear that sticks around is the stuff where there's no sense of urgency to draw conclusion or perseverate about it. But contentment is a phenomena that goes pretty far beyond being a gear reviewer or just having something really nice. My First Big Purchase in the watch world was a lot different than yours but I had a lot of similar experiences. I'm starting to dip into platitudes here but I agree that getting more experience with watches will continue to develop your perspective and you'll probably look at this watch a lot differently in 10 years whether it sticks around or not. And either way thankfully you should probably be able to acquire it again if down the line to change your mind. That's a good problem to have. Now, can you help me in rationalizing purchasing a ZT 0454 at aftermarket prices? Cuz I need some help there.

No once in the long history of my intense interest of all things watches, I have become conflicted about a given piece and then has said piece stuck around. Once I think about selling a watch, it might as well be FSOT. It sounds like you might be of similar mind when considering whether or not to keep a piece. I enjoy your videos. This one is interesting: practical man buys extravagant EDC item. My logic is mostly opposite of yours: I have lots of automatic watches that rest while not being used. It only takes a minute to wind and set to reactivate. I will not pay much for quartz. My experience with quartz is that when I take it for a new battery, sometimes they tell me it has no heartbeat (and is dead). Sometimes the replacement movements are discontinued. I do agree with you about not wanting to flaunt an expensive watch. I don't think most people pay attention to watches, if that makes you feel any better! It's a beautiful watch!

I just got my copy this exact same watch a couple of days ago. According to my timegrapher, dial up it loses 0 seconds per day, with a beat error of 0ms. I have never seen this level of accuracy on my timegrapher before. As far as I can tell so far (only a couple of days) it really is at about 0 secs per day. Because of some delays due to Covid-19, I had ordered another nice watch a long time ago and received this and the other watch on the same day. So far, I can't be bothered to wear the other watch.

I have some of the same thoughts about "showing off". While we made similar amounts of money, my brother always had a nice watch, nice shoes & clothes. He appeared far richer than me. I knew of course he was batting out of his league and deep in debt to finance a luxury lifestyle. I've reached a point where I can go buy one of these easily but I'm not sure if I should.

I don't think thats a fair statement for many people. Many of us, including myself, just enjoy "nice things" "artistic things" simply because we enjoy them, no matter what anyone else thinks. Don't get me wrong an occasional compliment is always enjoyable. Like many men (and I'm sure some ladies) we like a nice house, a nice truck, and a nice watch! So to speak. Second, an Omega is an investment. An investment you can visually, and physically enjoy on a daily basis. The $80 Eco Drive is worth $30 (if that) 10 minutes after you leave Sears. You could always sell that and get into a low mileage PO2500. Less massive in all dimensions. Less "blingy", but still a very attractive piece.

I bought that little Citizen BM8180-03E that you flashed up a couple of times and (now I've got it set right) I absolutely love it. I wear it all the time without worry. Wearing a $5000+ watch in public where I live (insurance or not) does not protect you from personal harm. If you live in a nicer area or mix in better circles then the risks are lower of course. Besides, I'd look like a complete cretin with a sparkly thing like that peeking out from under my charity-shop army-surplus jacket. On top of which I'd soon be arrested because it would 'look stolen'...!!!!

Omega Seamaster was my first “expensive” watch. Unfortunately, the Planet Ocean I chose to purchase from eBay was defective. It came with no warranty card. I just never thought a company like Omega would bring a faulty movement to market. I have been told that Omega had problems with the coaxial movement; bad rotor, over lubricated......etc. my local authorized dealer suggested I just give it a good winding. HeeHee. My local jeweler said he could fix the problem for $900.00. Again,........HeeHee.

you make me smile in alot of ways you are still a kid. when i started collecting knives and now have abt 30 pocket knives. i lost someting my old pocket knife of many any years i no longer use as my modern ones out shine it. even though it can cut and is very portable. i own two watches and they are my buddys not the best but mine they fill that nich in my life. one is a rolex i have owned for 26 years a gift from a woman. point is numbers of similar things take away from the uniqueness of the one. the answer is "the collection is the one" yours and therefore unique

Is there the possibility that you’re overthinking it? That in your heart you really just love this watch? I ask that knowing that you are a logical man, as am I, but sometimes I find it better not to analyze my “loves” too much.

To me it’s not showing wealth as much as showing that you set a goal, worked hard, saved up and earned it. I’m not a rich man but I want a Rolex someday just to meet that goal and leave it to my kids.

My thoughts are two-fold: People make value judgments. Somehow, spending $8,000 on a watch that you ‘could’ use every day for 40 years………and then turn around and give to someone to wear another 40 years is, “crazy” or “irresponsible”, yet people routinely spend $1000/year on a phone or $3,000 for a computer that might last 10 years (on the extreme long end), and nobody bats an eye. Secondly, 90% of the people on the planet wouldn’t know an Omega, let alone an AP, IWC, or Zenith watch from something you can buy in the mall for $300. Yeah, that Omega’looks’ expensive, but a lot of more expensive watches wouldn’t even be on the average person’s radar. Point being, it’s in the wearer’s head.

If you can sell the Norseman, you can sell this too. Sounds like the seed is planted in your mind. It''ll be gone inside a month.

I would not spend more than $200 on a watch. My edc is a Timex Ironman, for many years now.

I have the model before this 42mm 8500, fits terrible to tight then to big , had to buy a micro adjustment clasp, not happy at all,, omega have not but enough RD in to the design in the clasp ,,

If that's the most money you had spent on something without wheels or walls, you need to start buying things with barrels, scopes and triggers. You'll be reprogrammed really quickly as to what is and is not expensive.

I think you don't need to use a Citizen watch for this show, a Casio watch (10£) is enough, a car for five hundred pounds is enough to go to you wherever you want, and a model smartphone for fifty pounds is enough. Maybe this is what you want to say, and we keep our money in the banks so that it can benefit from them while we watch our bank account flourish without benefiting from it.

It would make no fiscal or practical sense for me to own a watch that costs this much. I would love to own one, but I wouldn't even be able to afford the servicing. It's kind of like winning a Jaguar on a game show. You'll love it until you have to insure it or pay to fix it. Also, I feel like I would look like a jackass wearing a very recognizable watch like a PO or a Sub, given the life I live. If I were rich, perhaps.

Stating a dive watch it too heavy and too big seems illogical. It's a tool for diving where weight and size are critical to survival...get a Aqua Terra if you want something smaller, lighter and costs less.
