The Zero Tolerance 0452CF is a very nice, very smooth pocketknife. Today, I show you how to take it apart, lubricate and clean, and put it back together for optimal smoothness. Enjoy!

I learned a secret to the free spin pivot.... If you tighten it down on the screw side (I mean tight, not like crazy but real good and firm) then flip it over and loosen the pivot side til it's free spinning again and tighten it down again, the knife will have perfect tension as the screw side will spin when the pivot side gets tightened back up once the right tension is reached. It's worked on my 0450 and Reate Hills.

Great video Nick I really appreciate you doing the 0452 CF glad to see that there is a stainless steel bearing race for the CF side i've been caring mine for about a week and I love it a little large. Also if you ever take apart your 0562 CF please make a video. I know you have been doing a lot of cleaning and disassembling videos I'm not demanding it by any means but I've heard that a lot of people have problems with the pivot even with lock tight thanks again

The ZT's are sleepers. They seem to know how good they are themselves because they certainly don't come cheap, but the whole current line of carbon fiber knives is fantastic. I recently bought ZT 0707 and Emerson Kwaiken, both are awesome, but the ZT is the more meticulously finished knife (and cost a few bucks more). The 0707 has a light blade, so the action is not the absolute most satisfying, that's the only negative. The 0452 is something else, I was close to buying it and if I didn't already have the Kwaiken I would have, but but I went with the smaller one, I didn't need another big scary knife, the Emerson has that covered lol.

I just got this knife today. I fucking LOVE it. at 6'3" i do have larger hands. But even my girl with small hands says she is comfortable holding it due to the thing structure of it. It is replacing my benchmade griptilian and i have a feeling i am not going back.

I am missing a center stand-off on this model it seems to have to big gap between the rear one and the front end... why did ZT save on that?

Tip for free spinning pivot: 1. Push with thumb one one side with a piece of inner tire to increase friction 2. When really difficult, get a piece of wood, drill hole, glue in a bit holder. Put one side on bit, use screwdriver on the other side. 3. Buy knives with a keyed pivot :-)

What's the point to a free-spinning pivot? Does it make the action smoother? Also nick, I found (I'm guessing others have by themselves too) that if you have a knife with a backspacer a la 0808, you can use that to pry open the stop-bar-pivot duo as a first class lever by pinching the ends or just twisting the backspacer.
@NickShabazz8 жыл бұрын

Hey Nick! I'm not overly smart so I was wondering how you would open up a spinning pivot with torx on only one side? I've tried side loading the pivot but it didn't work out and I thought you might have a better way of doing it.
@NickShabazz8 жыл бұрын
The only approach really is to heat it up (to melt the loctite) and use some sort of high friction surface on the other side (Latex gloves work well). Beyond that, it's just tough.

@NickShabazz8 жыл бұрын
It's a beautiful thing when done properly, but involves a lot of geometry to do that without hurting the lockup.

This was the perfect knife if it wasn't so dam big!!! The ergos were absolutely perfect and the action was zts best yet. We know a handful of zts have great action but this one somehow managed to be even better. The drawback was the ridiculous size and as for the smaller sized 0450, well ..... it was simply far to uncomfortable in the hand mainly on account of it's small size and poorly designed curved handle shape, ultimately on the 0450 my pinky had nowhere to go and was left hanging.

I absolutely love my 0452. It is one of the few knives that will remain in my collection and be passed onto my boys when they grow up. I have a ZT 0450 (the mini version) which I do not like. The blade stock on the 0450 is too thick and when I sent it in to be sharpened because the grind was waaaaay off. It came back worse than when I sent it in. Sorry for rambling but I would 100% get a 0452!!!!

I think you should put the knife in a vise when you unscrew the pivot screws. :-) Also, I just acquired a ZT 0456 and it's a little on the stiff side when opening. Any suggestions?
@NickShabazz8 жыл бұрын
+Oneness100 Badly wish I had a vice at my review table. But alas, I make do. And some lubrication can't hurt, but detents vary. If it's terrible, you could send it to ZT for some loving.
@Oneness1008 жыл бұрын
Nick Shabazz When I press the end to open it, I usually have to "flip" it open. I've seen plenty of videos of others opening and they can open it just by pressing on the button and they don't have to "flip" it to open it.
@NickShabazz8 жыл бұрын
Oh, you want it to be pushbutton. Mine wasn't, I don't think. That's a very specific kind of flipper, hard to do. Yours just might not get there.
@Oneness1008 жыл бұрын
Nick Shabazz I just got it a few hours ago and I'm sure it may take a little time for breaking in. I was just under the impression from watching a number of videos on the 0456, that it was going to be easier to open. I saw another video where they pressed the button and it swung open to the lock position without any other movements. Mine opens up about 3/4 of the way.

It could withstand hard use? since one of its handles is only carbon
@asherq86467 жыл бұрын
guillelax it can't take crazy hard use, because the stop pin is inside of carbon fiber on one side, you can't put an insane amount of downward pressure on the knife when it's open or it will crack the carbon fiber. in terms of EDC use, you're not gonna break this.

what does a lockbar insert do?
@ache4dalake7 жыл бұрын
Over time a lockbar, which by design, rubs against the blade tang locking surface gradually removes metal from one, or both, surfaces. This can eventually result in unreliable late lockup. 1) A removeable insert allows replacement if needed without having to replace the entire lockbar side. 2. Titanium is softer than the blade steel and will wear away more quickly. The steel against steel configuration will bring a longer lock function life. 3. The insert also acts as an overstop so that you can't push the lockbar further out away from the knife than is required to unlock the blade.

@benstevens29558 жыл бұрын
If that doesn't work, I got something for you. Worked for me. I have the 0450CF, and mine comes out just fine. If the PIVOT side (little tube dealy) is the one you're trying to get out, take the handle side pivot (Carbon Fibre) screw out, and rock it back in but don't screw it in. THEN start unscrewing the pivot (Titanium) side. It'll feed the screw back through and trade sides. If I missed the point, my bad, ignore all of that xD
@todaysgrailtomorrowsbeater8 жыл бұрын
+Ben Stevens I know what you mean, and thanks for that, but I'm having trouble with unscrewing the pivot in the first place, which is a step before what you're describing; but it's great to have a heads up for an issue that might arise after I manage to unscrew the pivot, so I appreciate your input.

I really dislike the 0452CF!! The videos failed to address the poor design of the knife!! Way too light for my liking and rather difficult to open!! Not worth the money!! I picked up an Olamic Wayfarer 247 a couple months ago, which is hands down better then the ZT!! The 247 springs open and begs to be used as opposed to ZT which demands to be closed and asks you to turn out the lights!!!
