The "problem" of the old minimalism cards is that the entire design philosophy behind level ups and what the cards represent changed over the time. In the original idea, the cards ARE the champions. The literal cards walk around and get additions, like in Teemo, GP or Viktor. They specifically couldn't show MF for instance because MF cannot walk around inside herself. After realizing that thinking up 200 ways to just stick stuff to the card is actually pretty hard since you are working with suuper limited space, the hand phase became more prominent where parts of the champion could be seen like in Diana or TF but still not the whole champ. It turned to a situation where the champion itself elevates its own card by infusing it with power. Lastly they just turned to the cards being actual snap shots of the champions. They are just pictures. So now you can add full character animations in and go to the next, cooler freeze frame. They went from cards being actual, living things to card just being your average card.

FWIW I asked the dev on twitter when Ziggs dropped why he was Shurima and the dev (whose name I forgot) said that they liked that Ziggs works with landmarks and countdowns and so mechanically, Ziggs fit Shurima really well, and then the aesthetic of mine fields was fun (IIRC). I actually really prefer Ziggs using deserts as minefields aggravating xer'sai than him being yet another contraption-based zaunite yordle.

I disagree on Jhin. I think the choice to imply the 4th shot instead of playing a sound was a very smart intentional choice. It fits Jhin perfectly to maintain the dramatic tension as long as possible.

I'm a sucker for level ups where the end pose matches the actual card art. Pyke and Udyr's specially, they just feel so clean. Makes me wish they were all like that. It also makes me kinda hate Jack's because while it's similar to the card art IT'S NOT ACTUALLY THE SAME POSE. It's so close to being perfect but it messes it up just enough for me to notice. It's like uncanny valley for level ups.

For the Jinx, the base lvlup is just "half of the story" as you say. Super Mega Death Rocket animation is the other half, and together, imo, it's a great lvlup, for the base game at least.

I’m with Snnuy that I don’t feel the cinematic level ups with full-body models are automatically better. Some like pyke really make it work, but the pinnacle has always been Swain for me as well. It’s far more important to capture the style and spirit of the character than it is to show the character doing something cool. Swain’s level up makes You feel like you are the conqueror.

My problem with J4's (why I would personally knock him down to high B tier) is he would absolutely not survive jumping off a 20-foot cliff like that, so I like to interpret him holding the crouch at the end as "well, I have just shattered my legs and spine and can no longer stand." Mostly agree with the tier list though! My personal favorite is actually Lucian's. It's so stylish and cool despite the limitations at the time, and transitions to the level 2 art perfectly.

it's really sad that they made this bad of a teemo lvl up, especially if you think about the potential. In lore, teemo is one of the most cold blooded killers in runeterra, with tristana literally saying that he is a good friend, but she is afraid of him once he is on a mission. Just think about it, if they actually made that into the lvl up. like imagine a cinematic with a group of poachers or whatever, going through the forest, and all of a sudden one shroom after the other pops up and explodes, and the last one backs into the bushes and you see the shilouette of teemo pop up behind him. that could actually be really cool.

Start with a shot making him appear small inside a volcanic crater- ensuring we can see the majority of the crator in shot- he taps his hammer two times, does the wind up slam, and we cut to far in the sky looking down as the volcanic crater is smacked down hard enough to lower the mountaintop as a whole.

For jhin: In lore he always goes to three and the fourth on is always implied in a way that is usually left behind. I may be wrong I just remember it that way, maybe that is why you don't hear the 4th shot break the 4th wall

Since I'm a Mogwai fanboy I picked up the habit of trying to do the same movement as in the level ups, thus I would rate these on a scale of how satisfying it is to reenact them (Swain being on top and closely followed up by Yasuo, Vi, Thresh, Soraka etc). However that would mean the majority of the level ups would be in a low tier, since you can't really imitate many (like I'm not gonna stand up to walk around like Teeto or having a poro come out from you behind). But this is just me
