Colombo to Hikkaduwa by Scooter! Sri Lanka Road Trip

It is officially time to begin our road trip around Sri Lanka! We are so excited to be exploring Sri Lanka on a motor bike for the next month. Today we leave Colombo and head South toward one of our favourite places in Sri Lanka; Hikkaduwa. It's a long journey with the two of us crammed on the scooter with all of our belongings, but we scheduled in lots of stops to rest and stretch out sore bodies so that we can really make the most of this road trip and enjoy the ride.

How gorgeous is Sri Lanka, eh? The ride from Colombo to Hikkaduwa took us through the busy capital city before we caught our first glimpse of the famous Sri Lankan beaches. Hugging the coast the whole way, we got more and more excited about the month ahead as we got closer to Hikkaduwa. Our first impressions of Sri Lanka on this road trip are that the country is best seen on a bike!! We're pretty sure we will convince you of this as we continue traveling in Sri Lanka and making Sri Lanka travel vlogs as we journey through this country :)
You may have seen news clippings from 2022 talking about Sri Lanka's ongoing economic crisis. The crisis has plummeted the value of the Sri Lankan Rupee and made importing goods into the country very difficult. Being an island, Sri Lanka imports a lot of good, including fuel! In this video we tell you a bit about this issue and our thoughts about how it may impact our road trip! We urge you to not let the news put you off of visiting Sri Lanka in 2023! Sri Lanka tourism is greatly reduced because of their ongoing economic issues but many locals rely on tourism to make a living and your dollar is needed now more than ever.

There are alternate routes that go through communities and are kuch slower. They're usually along the coast and are very beautiful 😁

@@nicoleandmico Actually high way roads are also very scenic here in Sri Lanka ,you must go at least one tour via highway . but you can't ride motor bikes there or stop any where .Enjoy your tour.stay safe and healthy

It's a little hectic feeling at first because there's a lot to look at but we actually got used to it pretty quick. It's well worth the effort so that we can have our own set of wheels 😊

hey That's fun. a year ago me and hubby travelled almost 1500 km on a scooter also and guess what? its HONDA DIO YELLOW scootie, Yass. so much fun, from Dambulla to Hikka also but our way is Arugam, Yala , etc. visited 15 Attractions stayed in 4 hotel. Its amazing. amazing, trip and well be doing our Sigiriya to Jaffna trip on scootie soon( just waiting for the dry season. luv u guys stay safe.

Hey Guys! Great to see you are in Sri Lanka! Will be heading back after almost a year and half in mid March too. Question, Are you guys using a seperate Mic with the Insta360 whilst on the road? Have been looking to get one for my stuff too and was wondering about the sound whilst on the road. Have fun and look forward to your next videos!!

Hey there! We aren't using a separate mic. We would have loved to but actually couldn't get one in Sri Lanka. We do own corded mics but being on the bike and having to deal with both of us talking seemed too distracting for us (i think we would have ended yp with corda wrapped around us). If you're on your own bike, I think it would work to use a corded mic though! The only trouble is you lose a lot of the ability to edit the full 360 degrees because the cords will be in the way. The best option is definitely a wireless lapel mic if you have it available.

I have friends here in Canada from Sri Lanka who say the government aligned economically with China, and the gov has withheld from the people things like fuel and food, as a way to keep people in line and in check. If that's true, and from what I noticed the gov was indeed holding back, then the Sri Lankan people are enduring extreme government abuse. My heart goes out to the good people there.

Hey Guys, I am going to Sri Lanka next week and have a question :-) How did you bring your Drone into through the airport? In the cabine on the flight or the check in ? did you filled any paper or did they check or question any thing ?

We just checked it in although we did register our drone online with the aviation authority before flying to the country. If you google drone laws sri lanka you should be able to find the steps of what forms to fill out. That said, we never needed to show the forms to anyone at the airport (but your mileage may vary). Is it safe to park your scooter with all your luggages outside shops or restaurants? (I'm planning to do a similar trip on a Royal Enfield)

Yeah we had no issues however we always just made sure to park and sit at a table where we can see our scooter. You can also sometimes ask the restaurant owner if there’s a secure place to park your bike and they may tuck it to the side for you. Enjoy the trip!

We are curious about which credit cards do you use so your not being charged foreign exchange fees? And how do you go about pulling money out of the bank?

Great question! We use a WISE card which is better on fx rates and fees. Also the quickest way to reduce your withdrawal fees is to search online for blogs that talk about the best banks to withdraw from as a foreigner. There are many blogs that usually say which bank will charge the least amount for withdrawals from foreign cards. Hope this helps!

Dear Nicole and Mico, Did you need an international driver license to rent a scooter or was a canadian driver license enough ? I have contacted the company and they told me that my passport and german driver license should be enough to create a sri lankan driver permit. Please advise. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Viet.

Hi Viet! In our experience, you do not need the international drivers license to get the sri lankan driving permit. We used our Canadian licenses and passport to get our sri lankan permit when we visited 😀

We paid extra for it, but had our scooter rental company organize it for us and paid for it all when we arrived to get the scooter
