I'm so glad my parents NEVER kept my birthday money. I could always give it to them and when I wanted money I'd ask. Sometimes they would pay with it for something, telling me before or after they used my money and if I wanted the money they'd apologize and always pay me back. It's so frustrating that some parents can't overcome their own feelings of not "being special" when THEIR children are supposed to be the special ones. Edit: they weren't great parents but this earns then some brownie points.

So glad my parents never took my giftcards to use like that. My mom stores money in several safes, where only the persons personal money goes, and where only my mom and that person can access the safe, so I don’t know anybody else’s, but mines, and the shared safe (with emergency cash, we all contribute a small amount, limit is $10 per person every month). Only mom knows everyone’s safe code. We can access them every time we need to grab some cash for field trips etc. They are all in our proper rooms, so there’s no mixing around.

If my parents ever used my money, they always asked me first. Like if my aunt got me a gift certificate to get my nails done, sometimes my mom would use it, but then she’d take me the next time she got her nails done and pay for my nails to pay me back. Now I’m paying my own car insurance and my mom asked to take $220 to make ends meet on bills and I told her go ahead because she said she’d pay me back on payday. When it was payday I was asking about it, mainly out of curiosity if she had put it back yet, she hadn’t and put it back right after I mentioned it. We were both working together to clean the kitchen, I was cleaning our stove. And I told my mom, she never has to ask to take my money if she needs help making ends meet, because I will always tell her yes if she asks, so I told her she doesn’t need to ask, I would just like to be told after she’s taken it that she did take it, just so I know my savings account will be a little less.

My mother was like this, one day on my what, tenth or eleventh birthday, my moms aunt gave me 50 bucks, i was super happy, right when my moms aunt left she walked up to me and said “_____ give me your money” i said why and she said “i need to pay someone to mow the lawn” even though her boyfriend does it for her for free. My mom would always tell me to give her the money to “hold” but then when I asked to use it. “What money? You never gave me any money!! Don’t try to gaslight me!”. Great skill to learn as a child when I was growing up I was taught by my grandpa to trick my family into thinking they will spend it so he will give me a card that says 50 and give me a card that says 10 and I would put the 50 out in the open but it actually has 10 and the 10 has 50 and I would put the 10 in My grandpa's hand and so when my family sees the 50 they will automatically take it out my hand and say well I will just hold this and we go grocery shopping I will ALWAYS see them use the 50 and get enough to pay for around 50 and I love to see their faces when The cashier says sorry do you have another payment type there's only 10 on this card😂 it's priceless and guess who kept their money all through elementary middle school and high school. It's the funniest fact is that they never gave up I thought I would fool them once and they wouldn't do it again no they did it every time I had birthday money from anyone I would always give it to my grandpa.
