Nicotiana, aka flowering tobacco, is easy to grow in most areas. It grows easily from seed so long as you know a few tricks. It's a great plant to mass plant or fill in areas in the garden, and hummingbirds love it. Many varieties have a heavenly scent, especially in the evening, so plant some next to where you'll enjoy it at the end of the day.

I’ve thought about commenting but now just had to share my funny Nicotiana story. I love Nicotiana but have never had much luck with them. Last year, my first winter sowing, I decided to try again with a 24” variety. Not much to lose, right? Only one seedling made it to transplant, but I was encouraged. It grew. And it grew. And it grew! Couldn’t tell what on earth it was. (Of course I hadn’t tagged it. My friends and I watched this “mystery plant” until it flowered. Then the “aha” moment. But it was 6’, not 2’! It became a focal and conversation point of my garden. I WILL plant the rest of that package this and I have a perfect spot in a front bed to wow all passersby. (I’m sure it was a mislabeled package. A wonderful mistake). PS I wish I had had access to your videos some years ago. I lived for 13 years just a few miles south of you, in Mequon, a mile from the lake. I had a huge garden and no one to guide me. I returned to Colorado 27 years ago, where gardening presents very different challenges. High altitude means that many things usually thriving in full sun, like hydrangeas, will fry no matter how much water they are given. Keeps it interesting!

Love this plant. I am in zone5B. It selfseeds here. Like nicotiana, the self seeded plants do not flower till late summer. I just winter sowed these seeds into 2 milk jugs this past week. Seems like a contradiction as both sown outdoors. However milk jugs act like a greenhouse for me. Seeds germinate quicker and plants seems to grow faster. Seedlings remain very small for some time. Then pop, time to transplant. Gave a few seedlings to my sister-in-law a few years back. She will never be without. She calls them her "soldiers" who attract butterflies.

nicotiana sylvestris is one of my favorite plants - thrives in the boiling sun where I live (suburbs of LA zone 10a), self seeds with abandon for me which is a nuisance but the seedlings are very easy to pull, excellent host for aphids, attracts butterflies and hummingbirds like crazy and smells heavenly at night, allegedly it's perennial here but I've never managed that... the bottom leaves tend to get ratty and the sap will wreck pruners faster than anything else so I always put it at the back of beds so other plants can hide the nasty bottom leaves toward the end of the season... every year I always tell myself to try another variety instead but I don't think I can!

That is exactly what some of my Purple Hyacinth vine leaves were starting to do, and the light bulb went on, as I realized that I had not given them any fertilizer since they leafed out. BTW, I am growing this vine for the first time thanks to your suggestion of it being one of your favorites in the garden for last year, so THANK you twice!

Start your sweet peas in empty 2liter bottles. They have a long root but the bottle allows for the root to grow well. Nick the seeds with a nail file and allow them to soak over night in the fridge before planting. The bottle works as a mini greenhouse and usually I see germination in 7-10 days.

This year is my first time attempting to grow ANYTHING from seed and I chose this plant to hopefully give to my mother around Mother’s Day. I used pelleted seeds and only about 55% of them actually germinated. Not sure if that is usual, if they are late bloomers or if I did something wrong. After they germinate, should I keep them on the heat pad? I have only one seeding per cell, do you suggest moving them to their own bigger pot at some point?

So funny, I just rewatched one of your garden tours from the summer that popped into my feed. I saw those hybrids you’re talking about. I want them all 😻 Can these be direct seeded in the spring, and have you ever tried that?

I haven’t but I would assume they’d behave just like the self sowers. Good bloomers just blooming later than those started ahead.

🤣 Well I have to say I love this comment because there’s some real emotion there. A few comments on pronunciation of botanical names. 1. Botanical names (called such because some come from Latin and others from Greek and still others from other random places or people) have no pronunciation because botanical names are not a spoken language. They are only a written language, therefore there are no correct or incorrect pronunciations. See this article for more: www.jlhudsonseeds.net/Pronunciation.htm 2. Taylor’s Guide to Annuals uses my pronunciation, along with other pronunciation guides. That said, pronunciations vary by country and region so mine may seem particularly abhorrent depending on where you’re from. 3. I don’t care how you pronounce them as long as you grow them. Also, thank you for giving me an excellent subject for my weekly newspaper column. 😀

The 10 inch ones are the ones I planted last year and I wasn’t impressed. Maybe I’ll try to grow my own from seed this year.💚🙃

I love Nicotiana but just grew it last summer for the first time. I’m wondering where you found those wonderful seeds? I don’t think I’ve ever seen them in the usual place. Thank you for all that you do. I love the tile behind you. I used it in my last house and I miss it.

How do you dead head the nictiana, do you pitch off each wilted flower individually or cut of the whole stock?

Both, but mostly the latter. I usually cut down to a leaf node
