Hi from Sydney, Australia. I worked in the fire research area of Aus Govt primary research organisation. A bit of trivia - Australia has the oldest sprinkler systems in the world, and no deaths in a sprinklered building. Cheers!

Only fun thing that would make the demo better. Start a little fire underneath in your fir pit we see on the patio and see how well it puts a real fire out. (do not repeat the entire test, just rig it up again the same way and turn on the water to the tripped head and see how well it deals with a real fire.

The only way to add a pump to increase the GPM is to add a buffer tank. You need 110 gallons reserve per head to cover 11 GPM. That’s @ 10 minutes. If the requirement is 20 minutes you need to double the reserve capacity.
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric Жыл бұрын
I am going to start by changing the really restrictive barbed Pex fittings that restrict it down to like a quarter inch first and see if I can increase my flow that way if that isn't enough then I will have to do buffer tank for sure

You don't have to buy brand new sprinkler, you just need that rod in it and it's easily to replace you., just have to turn off the water and then put that metal piece up and put the rod in.
@oaklynnmielcarek
@oaklynnmielcarek Жыл бұрын
I don't think that's how it works. The glass rod breaks and it is put into the sprinkler during manufacturing. You'd have to buy a new rod anyway and I don't think they sell the glass rod separately but if you have done this before, I am wrong.
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric Жыл бұрын
If it was only for demonstration sure you can put some thing in but the sprinkler won't activate at its design temperature anymore and would be pointless you can't unscrew the retaining set screw in the sprinkler it is filled with a resin the way that I have done it just for demonstration is to put a small bolt and nut in place and tighten it where you can pull it out not a perfect seal though only good enough for a couple minutes until you pull it out
@psirvent8
@psirvent8 Жыл бұрын
@@oaklynnmielcarek Here in France they actually sell similar rods as a spare for smoke vents. These are basically roof windows or skylights that are opened by pneumatic cylinders and CO2 cartridges. Manual stations allow to open the smoke vents by pulling a handle that will puncture the cartridge, however there are also automatic devices that have a glass vial (or "rod") like sprinkler heads, except their failure will not release water but a spring-loaded pin that will puncture another CO2 cartridge in order for the smoke vents to open on their own as well. These vials also come in various colors, one for each temperature, just like sprinkler heads. They are really meant to be replaced individually as well as the CO2 cartridge since the actuating device itself is reusable. Not sure if these vials would fit on sprinkler heads though.

Garden hoses use GHT (Garden Hose Thread) whereas pipes use tapered threading (NPT in USA/Canada and ???, BSP elsewhere). Usually when I need flexible hose to attach to piping, I'll use barb adapters and hose clamps. These are usually carried in most hardware stores. You just have to make sure what you use is meant for piping, and not garden/lawn. One scenario where GHT is used, is typically hot water storage tank drain valve. I have not added sprinkler system to my home, though I contemplating it. I have an unusual situation, where there are 3 booster pumps the size of a large cargo van each that were recently added at the end of my block (in a faux house)... and I found out from my local water council that my home's feed is tied into a 200mm (8 inch) main, just 30 meters (100ft) from my house. I had to use 2 PR valves to reduce my pressure to normal domestic levels... Due to burst flex pipes in dishwasher after water council added these pumps/booster station. I hooked up a 100PSI gauge and it pegged. 200PSI gauge... it pegged it... Finally I added a large 2000kPa fire sprinkler gauge and it nearly pegged it. Gauge only has kPa markings, but doing conversion, this was near 300PSI! Come to find out after council did an evaluation around the block, that someone had connected my main where it wasn't supposed to be, and council moved it to a 100mm/4 inch feed. However, pressure still is over 1700kPa(250PSI). Bad for house, but tempted to test and see how it performs with sprinklers tehehe! I remember watching the pump station being built, and somewhere still have photos of the in and out supply piping to that place. The pipes were almost 1 metre in diameter. Absolutely huge
@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I learned that after the fact I should've known better. I do need to find some sort of adaptor for sure. and that definitely does sound like an interesting situation at your home!

@NIC’S - SYSTEMS & ELECTRIC On a well, right in the well room, I see around 75 or so after it replenishes the pressure after a shower or something. 250 would have explosive results on a shower or at a sink faucet, let alone a fire sprinker.
@r3tr0nic
@r3tr0nic Жыл бұрын
@@glonkfpv Had, yes. unfortunately... I came home to a flooded kitchen and laundry room because the hose for the dishwasher burst, and the valve in the washing machine (modern plastic crap) also burst. That's when I went through the gauges, upping in size until I did not peg them anymore and was blown away by what I was seeing... I also had wierd pulsations in the pipes. I can only surmise this is due to however the council runs the pumps (the system that controls the demand of them and operating parameters). I do not know what they run, but it seems as either there is an out of balance issue between the three pumps, there is harmonic resonance/feedback loop in supply piping, or something else. The pulsations stopped after council changed me to a smaller mains tap. Craziest thing I ever seen. All the piping in my house is copper and soldered. No PEX, push fits/sharkbites or any of that kind of stuff.

@nics-systems-electric
@nics-systems-electric Жыл бұрын
No delay no, a slight delay would be nice but it hasn't caused any problems yet
@BR-ft2xg
@BR-ft2xg Жыл бұрын
I’m surprised that there is no delay. Usually there is a dial to adjust the timing. I always had to have fire alarm activate within 90 seconds of a sprinkler head going off to meet NFPA. This delay in the alarm allows pressure fluctuations. I also don’t see a backflow preventer. This keeps the stagnant water from getting sucked back into the city water supply if there was a water main break. First time seeing this channel and very intrigued by why a residential house is set up like a commercial building with em light, fa panel, smokes, sprinklers, signage. Just curious as to why? Also the horn strobe combo on the outside is usually mounted above the FDC fire department connection so they know where to hook up the pumper. I bet the neighbors love it when you are testing the system. I honestly haven’t seen a house set up like this before.

Actually, setting it off and shutting the valve RIGHT AWAY wouldn't be worse than say, dropping a water bottle on the floor, or accidentally splashing water while doing the dishes or cooking, see what I mean ? Basically everyday mishaps that don't usually end up with mold or even much damage at all except perhaps if electronics or unsealed wood get wet, it might leave some spots for the latter at most. ( *Read more* ) Sure, it would be annoying to mop the water, however it's not like a commercial system that will pump way more water every second and will keep flowing for hours until the arrival of the fire department and building manager or whoever has the rights to shut down the system.
