Yeah, nothing suspicious at all about a guy who plays months like a 2300, then plays a few games (the onws without strong anti-cheating detection) as the strongest player in the world. This is beyond funny at this point. Other than a few 15 year olds who watch his streams, no one thinks this dude is clean. Top GMs talk about it openly, even.

@@scottekoontz They don’t remain on the same level, but there isn’t a single other GM in the world who vacillates between 2300-2950, because even the ones who cheat are aware enough not to be so blatant at it. Niemann does it because he’s really not that good, so he doesn’t know how to disguise his cheating very well, and because his fan base is 13 years old, so he can do that to draw some more pre-teen viewers to his streams, where he makes his money.

Of course you can cheat with those time controls. You can get a constant eval which is a huge advantage at this level and can be alerted when there is something to look for ("pause the video" moments). You can also get duplicated moves in real time and follow older engines suggestions when you are not sure (which are still stronger than humans). In this game though, I do not see any reason to suspect it.

The difference between a pin and a skewer has to do with the value of the pieces. In case of a pin, the higher value piece is x-rayed through the lower value one, vice-versa in case of a skewer. 12:23 is a skewer.

What a very human game this was. Especially in the way that Niemann made three blunders no computer ever suggested. First he hung a pawn, but Nakamura thinks for a long time and blunders in failing to take it. Then Niemann made an unsound knight sacrifice, but Nakamura failed to take best advantage and blundered back. Finally Niemann missed a forced win, but Nakamura missed the forced draw. Another very human feature was the way Niemann failed to take full advantage of Nakamura's inaccuracies in the opening, with equal inaccuracies of his own. So Niemann won in extremely human style. And this is really quite typical.

@ Hans was only number 39 in the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship 2023 so I was not impressed with Hans' results in that tournament. Titled Tuesday Weekly Chess is also known for having many cheaters. Caruana has said this: "When we spoke to Kramnik he estimated that 25% of titled players in Titled Tuesday or online chess are cheating. I would guess it is much higher than that. I think it is probably over half [of titled players] who at least very sporadically [cheat]". When someone who has cheated before in online tournaments like Hans and he knows that Titled Tuesday is full of cheaters, it can be tempting to cheat a little sporadically yourself. I would never trust Hans as a previously caught cheater playing in an online tournament he knows is full of cheaters it can be tempting to go back to his old sins.

@@scottekoontz do you mean *not do well. Cause he is ranked #92 offline bud. finished only 40th at the recent world blitz. didn't do well at tata steel. I mean if he was actually playing well otb it might be believable but I think the kid is tired of getting smashed otb that he couldn't help himself online. After his settlement I guess he feels untouchable. The website really should of took it all the way to court, because now it will never be seen as a serious gaming platform.

@@RichACBlues There is something to be said for how memory works based on people being in a familiar surroundings. If he learned and practiced chess online then he is probably going to go better online and worse on a board. Kind of like how if you practice something with music you will remember it better when playing that music. Or if you always study sitting down then your memory will be worse if you are laying down or standing. I'd imagine that the difference between 40th and 3rd is remembering a single move further ahead, or being able to think out your moves just a fraction of a second ahead each time. And I could easily see someone that is always looking at a digital chessboard mentally being thrown off the tiniest bit when they are looking at actual chess pieces.
