"it's unclear on how Caim could have survived to become infected and become Red-Eye" The lore can provide a possible explanation. Angelus's 'dark' form somehow dissolves the pact with Caim in Ending C, allowing Caim to speak and, more importantly kill Angelus without dying himself. Since Angelus has this form in ending E, it's likely that the pact was naturally dissolved meaning the Red Dragon's death at the end of Route E would not have killed Caim. So how did Caim survive the missile explosion, let alone the fall to earth? Is he just a fucking LEGEND? (tbh I'd buy this) Well, in Drakengard 3, it's established that when a Dragon dies, it gets one wish, and usually dragons use this wish to simply reincarnate themselves, which is how Michael became Mikhail at the beginning of the game. However at the end of ending A, Mikhail implies that this wish can be used on other things. Perhaps Angelus used the dragon wish to keep Caim alive. Since we know that the Red Dragon developed something resembling feelings of love for Caim, it wouldn't be out of character to do this. So in short, Angelus's final form broke the pact with Caim, and then as they died, Angelus used the Dragon Wish to keep Caim alive, for a little while longer, anyway. This scenario would be in line with Drakengard 1's overall theme, where every seemingly heroic action winds up being nothing more than bows and arrows agains the lightning. Caim saved the world by sacrificing Angelus, but really only served to preserve the thin seal between peace and destruction. Caim could kill the demonic form of his sister, but not an entire army of her. Caim could defeat Angelus single handedly, but probably not an army of Dragons, etc... So in this scenario, Angelus may have protected Caim from death, but nothing could have protected him from the White Chlorination Syndrome, and what better revenge for the Watchers than to have the greatest champion against them be their slave to lead an army against mankind? That is so very Drakengard.

『B E T I M』 True....... but then again "Red Eyes" is an indication that the watchers have complete and total control over your body, something only "Red Eye" during the events leading up to Nier. Maybe Caim's a special case, where they decided to not even give him a choice, as he was considered too valuable.
@alafosca5724
@alafosca5724 7 жыл бұрын
I think Caim would go totally insane after everything. If we put the example of the theory of Caim being resurrected by Angelus' last wish, he would probably have the desire to destroy both humans and Watchers on his own. Making him a major villain in a next Drakengard game, totally apart from the Watchers. Still, I don't know much about the White Chlorination Syndrome, so mi idea could be 100% imposible.

@@Clemps late to the party - but I fully agree with this comment. For a while now I've been looking for detailed and accurate analysis on the Drakenier universe. I've played each game, but after watching all of your videos (NeiR being the last analysis to watch) I've realised things I never even considered on my playthrough. I also love the fact you even include the official books and screen plays, honestly it's like I've seen a different side to Drakenier. Excellent work. It's a bit disingenuous to say there are no real differences between Brother and Papa Nier. I like both, but the reality is the first half of the game makes far more sense with Replicant as it's supposed to be a coming of age story and his loss of innocence. Getalt is just too cynical and hardened by a life in that world and it's why he doesn't change anywhere near as much by the timeskip.
@Aisubun
@Aisubun 7 ай бұрын
Yes but the actual story beats are identical (e.g. Yonah goes to the Lost Shirne->You meet Weiss->Get told to collect sealed verses->etc) so even if they are different characters it is the same story. I don't think that's a disingenuous claim.

In regards to 12:30 ---------------SPOILERS AHEAD------------------- I actually kinda have grown to love this little detail. It wasn't until after playing the game all the way through and revisiting it recently that I realized it's actually kinda awesome. These towns and villages with warriors capable of fending off the shades make it seem like humanity should be doing just fine. They've got food, protection, and while shades tend to attack it seems like they get wiped out more easily than people do. Even without Weiss, Nier can take down a swarm of the little ones without much issue. But that's the thing. The problem isn't the shades, not even the berserk ones. If that was the case, these locations would never see peace and would almost always be in need of repair. It would look more like we'd expect a post-apocalypse town to look. The problem is that they are killing the shades to begin with. In all irony, these villagers are their own apocalypse. Once a shade is gone, there's no way to create its replicant, ultimately reducing the population with every dead shade. It's not the monsters, it's just that the population just gets smaller and smaller with each generation. Long story short ... They're literally killing themselves.

A replicant can't reproduce to create a body that doesn't have a corresponding shade I think, also I think if a shade still exists another replicant counterpart will be made for it as it seems the process is automated and has happened multiple times before the game starts

I think Greatswords needed some work, but otherwise the gameplay was compelling enough in its simplicity. The whole of the package made for a good enough combat that usually doesn't last long after the early game anyway. The Sidequests reward you with a bit of personality and story decently enough (some more than others) that I didn't have a problem doing them. For the early game, it sorta gave it the feel of watching an Anime, which I deeply enjoyed. NIER isn't perfect, but that's just because it's in its own TIER of greatness (joking).

Undoubtedly Yoko's best game so far. The reason for that is simply that, while D1 has a lot of interesting IDEAS and concepts, it mostly is not actually that well-written per se. It dives a bit too far into its own nihilism but doesn't necessarily have that much substance to compensate, most of it is just the character concepts like Caim being a statement on the questionable nature of heroism, but they're not exactly complex or do much to get sympathy from the audience. About the closest thing is Caim's pitch-black charisma. It's interesting and the novelty of its bleakness can't be denied but if it was the only thing Yoko had done, or all he ever did I wouldn't hold him in anywhere near the same regard as I do presently. NieR on the other hand keeps the weird stuff, the extremely dark events, the subversions, but it adds a lot of warmth and love into the story. It's a story centered ENTIRELY on love, in fact. The characters are much more sympathetic, while being interesting in both concept and execution. It's not really just the main characters ever, a lot of the NPC's you run into are genuinely good people too as you pointed out. It has a way more positive view of humanity than Drakengard does. This means you are a lot more invested in the story because you care more about the people the horrible things are happening to. Not to mention that the game has a lot more levity in general, a lot of the jokes in it hit home and much of the banter between Weiss, NieR, Kainé and Emil puts a smile on your face if it isn't making you laugh outright. This is also helped immensely by the mostly great script and voice-acting. There are some more cheesy lines and melodramatic moments but it's far better than the scripts in most JRPG's, except the greats like FFXII and Vagrant Story.

You know, on the subject of Brother Nier over Father Nier. Would it be nice, if they ever decide to remaster Nier, that they would give you the option to choose to play as either Brother Nier or Father Nier. Because, I kinda really like the idea of the brother being Nier Jr. and the Father being Nier Sr. That the life of this family of a single Father, brother, and sister being destroyed by the apocalypse, and either the Father or Brother sacrifices himself to protect the rest. Maybe have the Shadowlord be the one you didn't pick, so it's always the Father vs the Son. Would that add to the tragedy of the story?

I don't think that brother Nier's side journey of getting buggered by butt pirates should be seen as making brother Nier "canon," but rather an extension of Yoko Taro's original reason for introducing brother Nier to replace father Nier in the first place. Namely, mocking the Japanese sister complex and the Oni-chan trope that pervades JRPGs. I hope Clemps still checks out these comments since I agree father Nier is the much better character.

Maybe I missed this subtext. I was under the impression Taro wanted to created something original and different with his games. To be honest, I like the first Drakengard the best, and then it all seems downhill from there. Drakengard 2 has great gameplay but a very disapointing story and missed the obvious opportunity to make Manah the main character. Nier has a great story and characters, not to mention the amazing music, but the gameplay is very lacking. Drakengard 3 was mediocre all around. Now we'll see how Automata turns off to be. I heard it's very good.

Wew lad, what a fuckin ride. I went full sperglord and got the platinum trophy, guess I need to read the Grimoire translation. I've never played a game that had all these different styles before (bordering hack'n'slash main, bullet hell, isometric dungeon crawler, text based adventure) all in one, let alone pulling it off cohesively. I love the fact that Papa is ugly as fuck as I'm pretty over the whole androgynous anime character, don't even get me started on the ONIIII-SAMA! trope, even if it's turned on it's head Madoka style it's super refreshing having an unattractive main character. I think the only song that got to me after a while was the Northern Plains one, as good as is it the vocals became grating while grinding. I loved the fishing quests for the repeated SHHH, YOU'RE SCARING THEM AWAY banter and if you tackle fish corresponding with your fishing level it's really not that difficult. The side quests were a real treat when they fleshed out characters, helping Yonah cook, Emil's butler, Facade escapades. Like you said, you start getting comfy and then BAM they start hitting you with the feels and once you start going for the other endings it turns into Everything & Everyone Is Shit: The Game and I absolutely love it. I went from thinking Automata got dat Toobie booty to being fully torqued thinking about the story and the dream team making it.

Yoko Taro is such a bizarre genius. All the complex backstory and deep mysteries covered in most of this video and it's basically non existent in the game itself. Hell, if it wasn't for fan translations we still wouldn't know most of this stuff and yet still there's so much I can't wait to see you cover in the second half. The complex worlds and stories he creates are seriously unmatched. Great video as ever dude, when you said it'd drop before the end of the year, you delivered just in the time, can't wait for part 2!

My brother by chance bought this game for me on xbox 360 when it came out as it said Square Enix on the front. I played it aged 16 and absolutely adored it but couldn't find anyone who knew about it or had even heard of it really. It was the first time playing a game which really changed how I thought stories could be told in the medium. I learnt about Drakengard much later when Automata was announced and came across your videos randomly one time. My God if this isn't one of the most interesting, thought provoking, beautifully depressing and just batshit insane pieces of media ever created. Although FFIX is my favourite game mainly for it's nostalgia, I find myself constantly trying to find out more and more about this series through every facet possible and for me it's one of the few series where I look forward to content for it outside of just games. I look forward to getting my hands on an English version of Grimoire Nier and just absorbing as much as I can from this series. Even to this day I don't find many people who've heard much about drakengard/nier outside of automata in my day to day life but I hope over time more and more people get into it. Nier is a strange example in particular where I didn't really love the gameplay but was SO completely absorbed by the story that I had to see more and more. The story was the bigger part which was something I had rarely experienced. Often with rpg's I find myself half listening to the story as they are so often pretty on the nose but the gameplay would keep me going. With Nier, I enjoyed the gameplay somewhat but I just wanted to see so much what happened next. It hooks you from the beginning. Not to mention the incredible music. Please excuse the boring rant :L I don't often comment on content but wanted to say how much I love your videos and explanations of the stories and find myself rewatching them incredibly often. I think you personally have managed to bring a good amount of new fans to the series which is quite the feat to be honest. Fantastic work Clempsy!

He is clearly a crazy person/true artist. He wrote Pascal who accidentally taught a bunch of children how to fear, which is... something. The man is right up there with Tarantino and Miura for writing that fucks with people's understanding of what it means to be human.

There's a certain level of testicular fortitude necessary in writing a character just to have them lose their mind from the weight of their actions. I can't do it, but I also can't cut off my ear and mail it to someone out of spite, and it's in recognition of my own limits as an artist that I can see when someone is what I would call "an absolute mad lad".

I love that there is a specific ending in automata for removing your cpu, even when the game tells you specifically what is going to happen. And then it calls you an idiot, because it told you several times that it wasn't a good idea to essentially remove your brain, and then the obvious thing happens.

The game also controls the best of any Taro game, but that's 100% subjective.

EDIT: (I edited out some language in this video that could get people in trouble if they react to my content. I'd bleep it but KZfaq doesn't let you do that for some reason! Thank you for understanding!) As depressing as this is to admit, you might be right. Did a further bit of digging after I read this, and despite being told by multiple sources that the picture was from the Grimoire, I can't find any picture in the online collection documenting it. EVEN MADE A GOOFY EDIT IN THE VIDEO, NOOOO. I'll correct this in the next Part and add an annotation, though I've still read a lot of people think that Red Eye is Caim following different theories, such as the random attacks on the facility holding Angelus. Thank god I stated it was a theory in the video or I'd look like even more of a plum.

I also agree that it's almost certain that Caim is Red Eyes in spite of that picture not being official artwork. There are too many things that do add up for it not being even in the slightest true. But I have to admit I'm disappointed as well because I thought that I was in the wrong here and it was in fact true :(
@Clemps
@Clemps 7 жыл бұрын
Its a VERY popular theory. Caim's body not turning up despite not burning up, the attack on the facility... it all adds up to SOMETHING, but that something might not even be true. Really hope Eve turns out to be a link or answer to that in Automata
