This is my attempt at a complete recounting of the story of NieR Automata. It's long. Probably too long. And too thorough, while still not covering thoughts I'm still having while writing this. Watch or listen to it in pieces. I will ask nicely that you comment with your opinions on the game or anything I got wrong or didn't include. My immediate thoughts are that I didn't include anything about A2 cutting her hair short like 2B or the closing credits symbolizing the dev team urging you on. I'm a failure, but at least I spent way too many hours on this project while doing so... I'm so tired.
It appears that they copyright claimed the video and it's not eligible to be seen in Japan. This saddens me so I blurred the footage of the dlc ending. It is gonna look weird but I don't want to restrict the 5 people in Japan who will inevitably find this video to be excluded from watching it.
I set up a simple discord channel. Feel free if to join if you wanna talk to me about games separately from the comments.

hi, thx for the video, this game means a lot to me too, been playing all of Yoko's games, and a little info on the day cycle of the game, is that the earth stopped rotating due to some event and that's why it always day time in that side of the world, If not mistaken this is something from before the 1r Nier, so is basically still happening during automata time

@Raymer Rodríguez thank you for the response. I am sure I encountered that at some point but don't recall it specifically. I played these nier games numerous times now but I'm certainly still not an expert and I've learned some backstory from several of my commenters.

@Bryan Alexander I still think I did a good job with that video but it rendered wrong and I didn't realize til too late. It has some audio issues. In regard to playing replicant. Do it. If this game made you feel things, replicant is libel to get you as well. I hope you enjoy it like I did.

This made me feel like I was finally talking with someone about this masterpiece of a game. A slow and boring day at work turned into a walk down memory lane with all the different moments in this game. There are people who can actually enjoy this long format just to chill, so thanks! I wish there was something like this about all the scattered lore of this game (the novellas, the audio discs, the concerts, the interviews, the short stories, the cameos in other games that add to the lore, etc). Anyway, Take care :)

Excellent. That was the inspiration for this work. In regards the assorted other media, I'm sure some one has made it but I haven't looked for it. Partly because I am the type that enjoys some of the holes in my knowledge. Sometimes your imagination is better than reality. Perhaps I'll be inspired to seek out the stage play and the novellas and all that at some point but the holes in the history is interesting enough for me at this moment. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I think rather than a plot flaw when 2B says emotions are prohibited, it is more a reminder for her to keep her distance. In the short story long, you read about some of 2B’s pervious encounters of taking out 9S. Even in the beginning, she tells him to drop the formalities. She knows him, almost a little too intimately, but she kills him over and over and over.

Yeah it's not something that bothers me with any real sincerity but I still maintain that angle should have been expanded on to merit it's inclusion. It seems pretty obvious that the point is that no one follows the rule anyhow and that is what is most interesting anyways. I don't really care but foe how many times they reiterated that they never show any consequences for any one showing any emotion

In the timestamp of 2:06:27. The word that is most likely blep out is "Free" because in nier reincarnation (mobile game that square enix made) there is a event that is focus on 9S and it high lighted that he want to free 2B, Also he hack 2B and saw all the endings and his own deaths multiple time.
@shepergames3734
@shepergames3734 Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Yoko taro left that intentionally vague to spur people's imaginations. That bleep left a far greater impression on the masses than any 4 letter word by itself could have. Free makes sense. Thanks for the info
@lumeronswift
@lumeronswift Жыл бұрын
Some people have suggested other alternatives, too, like "kill" - the fact that it is vague is interesting... but would have been better if the word was crackled out rather than bleeped out because there are only two or three words that ever get bleeped out, and from memory only one of them is a verb.
@futureddude4250

There are a LOT of words that fit here to be fair. Kill, Free, Save, Hurt, Love, Kiss, etc. and they all fit, their relationship is extremely complex and all of these words convey it

what i think is most sad.. how under rated this game is at times. i always hear "Under Tale has the best story and tragic characters.." but those same people have probably never considered this game. this game plays with your emotion in a way other games have never tried, and having a more focused theme only deepens those emotions.

Just wanted to drop a comment saying thank you so much for doing this! I really wanted to re-exoerience this game in-depth with the story being top priorety, but didn't want to slog through a long, unedited playthrough, and my laptop is garbage with my PS4's on death's door. So replaying it wasn't an option either. This was EXACTLY what I needed. I know from watching that you obviously know how meaningful this story is and still is today, and thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to sink back into the depth, immersion, and emotion this game excells in. I also watched your Replicant video and had a blast with that!!! (And yeah, I'm here because the church mess dragged me right back into this universe half-heartedly kicking and screaming lol.) Again, thank you!!!

Thank you so much for the kind regards. That is exactly the intent of videos like these. Sometimes you just gotta sit back and feel the second hand appreciation that some one else has for a piece of media to properly grasp your own appreciation. I beat nier automata and then immediately bought nier gestalt. Then once that was completed I sat back and absorbed as much content on the games as possible to be able to live vicariously through other people's new found enjoyment. As a small hobbyist creator, I appreciate all of the viewers who take the time for my videos and I appreciate kind words even more.

I was too bold at the start. I'd suggest playing the first section of the game on easy, then switching to normal once you can save. No shame in the game player. You can't experience the game without actually playing all the game. As you might be able to tell, I have a passion for this franchise and it is worthwhile to experience it yourself in whichever way you are capable. No one is grading you on the way you play games. I don't know if it's just me but it felt like your narration fit the personality of the story perfectly - at the surface strict and rational but with little surprises here and there, the funny remarks and the personal feelings seeping through. I think you really did the story justice, touching on all the vital parts that also had the biggest influence on me. I'm so glad you set aside time for the side quests too, I have yet to see another RPG that puts as much care into the simplest fetch quest to turn it into something meaningful and fun. Thank you for the effort you put into this, you can see it comes from a place of genuine passion!

I've just binge watched your Replicant video, and then this after having been fascinated by the world of the game for the longest time, but never really being able to get very far in either game as the gameplay wasn't my thing. Regardless, both of these games have touched me deeply, without even having played them I lost count of the amount of times I cried, both during this video, and your Replicant video - I don't think I'll be able to see any NieR related content anymore without tearing up at least a tiny bit Out of all the videos I could find that attempted to recap the whole story from start to finish, yours were by far the best, audio issues in the Replicant video be damned. Thank you for making these games that much more accessible, without your two videos I would never have experienced these two absolute titans of storytelling

Just wanted to leave a quick comment commending you for putting in enormous amount of effort it took to create and edit this massive video. A while ago I played route A, and when I started route B with 9S, I was a bit annoyed with how hacking worked, and I didn't want to put in the time to finish the rest. Now years later after hearing about how I very literally only touched the surface I thought to look up the full story. This was a joy to watch and experience. It was the level of detail that I look for, and it may get me to pick the game up again, if only to experience this masterpiece of storytelling.

This was my ultimate ambition with this video. My ultimate hope was to reach some of the people that didn't put in the time to finish or even start the game. I obviously loved it and my hope was that some of that love could rub off on others so they could see what I could see with this game. The hacking is very much a potential sore spot for some. If you do ever come back to give it a second go, I'd suggest using some chip upgrades to improve his hacking skills because it makes him an absolute god of a murder machine. Maybe if you're destroying whole mobs in just a couple of hacks you might find some enjoyment while using his quick attacks to smash through the weaker enemies. The story picks up again and splits off from route A fairly early and those who reach that point are far more likely to be motivated to finish. Even if you don't go back, I'm just happy to hear I was able to inspire some appreciation of the story told. Thank you.

this is a fantastic video, thank you for making it! i haven't seen a lot of people talk about the many beautiful side quests in the game, & i myself have enjoyed most of them in my playthroughs. I just want to say that for the "Wise Machine" quest, i think it's implied by the game that it's just one machine changing locations until its demise, although i like your interpretation that there's more than one machine considering their own mortality

So I’ve gotten myself the PS5. While God of War came with the system, I decided to buy and play through Nier: Automata first. I’ve always been impressed by the character designs when seeing either commercials or crossovers. While I would consider myself a true fan since I have yet to play any of the other games in the series, I was not disappointed with the game. The documentary was very enjoyable. Honestly, I’ve had to learn most of what I know from listening to other people talk about the game since I’m not the player that’s going to put in the time to piece everything together. After first seeing A2 in the forest my thought was “please tell me I get to play as this character?” I would consider myself someone who enjoys the surface level of games. I got ending C, but I will probably never do the later routes because the novelty of the latter content is fulfilled in videos on KZfaq. I agree, there is something about this game that hits differently. Appreciate the work.

So interesting to note that a predecessor or antecessor of 9S, name no.9, Created Project Yorha and started this life and death cycle between 9S and 2B indirectly. It was so cool to see 9S though grow in strength through out the game. At end game, he was stronger than 2B seeing as she could not defeat 4 Yorha flight units, at the same time using a flight unit herself, while he was able to take them down 6 flight units while on his feet alone. At the same time defeating bosses like Operator 21B and others! his resolve and murderous tenacity after going off the deep end was what overclocked his body way past its limits. I would of love to see 9S defeat/kill 2B multiple times and joined up with A2 in one of the routes or create a separate new route. In the Nier Concert Drama which you can find on KZfaq, they have a video where they extended Ending E or modified it up a bit. Showing how 9S and 2B were revived at the end.

@@shepergames3734 Don’t cut yourself short man you did an amazing job and while you may claim to be a novice you delivered some very good work. I now finished the video and its one of the only times I finished such a long video. I watched it in 3 parts essentially. But what is great about your video is that you switch to game audio/dialogue at just the right moments to sort of “revive” the attention of the viewer. As someone who has been making short video essays on the Elder Scrolls series story and lore for years now I have learned that 15 minutes is about the time a viewer can listen to one voice uninterrupted most of the time. Your way of sometimes interrupting it with gameplay dialogue, especially on impactful moments is really well executed and it makes for far easier watching. And while there are some hiccups every now and then in the narration that is in no way bad here as it also provides a short break essentially and it also reinforces the feel that this is someone really passionate about the game telling you about their experience. And I mean both those points in no way negative as it greatly enhances the experience for me. Also your use of sometimes not playing music in the background also worked great to keep attention, I noticed sometimes that with longer videos that use a lot of background music that the music could sort of tire me out while your breaks without music greatly helped me refocus. And I love your sense of humor and the light jokes here and there as they are also much needed relief in such a long video. To make a long story short: You made those almost four hours an absolute joy to watch and your passion for the game made it ever so much better. A 10/10 video if I have ever seen one. I am one of the people who loved route A but then I could not get a hold of the hacking and I gave up after a bit. But I still wanted to experience the story and you made that possible, and you did an absolutely amazing job. I cant imagine how much work this video took and I have nothing but respect for your massive effort. I played through ending A and decided that it wasn't worth the time to play through the whole thing. I decided that I was just going to watch someone explain the story since I knew it was something that many people thought was special. But as I got to the end of route A in your video, you convinced me somehow to play through the whole thing. It seemed to be something that I had to experience for myself and it really was. I spent 10 hours playing route A and another ~20 hours to get to ending E. After finishing route B, I watched your video up until route B and it was like playing it along side someone which was nice. You encouraged me to play through some frustrating parts (at the time I didn't realize the power of heal spamming, I thought I should save the money for something else. Also dodging on pc felt dumb because you have to double tap your movement key which made it a little slower. Also there was a bug I found where if you spam it, your dodge will just make you sort of stutter walk). Nier Automata was a truly special experience which transcends normal games. I will treasure as such. So thanks for this video!

It's referenced that they aren't supposed to show emotion but inevitably literally every character in the game shows tons of emotion and there is no sign of consequence for it, nor is there ever an explanation why that rule would be in place. In my eyes it was a minor gripe so I voiced my opinion on it but it had such little impact on my enjoyment that I struggled on whether or not to even mention it.

@@FintanMajora oh snap I just read the weapon story. I really hadn't done so since when I first played the game the weapons had no stories. So his head basically hints at the sequel... alright I'm game. I would also be ok with a game set in a past timeline with all new characters or maybe one playing through as emil or his sister during the middle of project gestalt. I just know I'm a yoko taro shill now so I'll basically buy whatever he puts out.

@@shepergames3734 the rule isn't a strict one, but 2B enforces it hard with 9S because as you saw, her killing 9S severely hurts her, her line "why does it always have to end like this" is emblematic of the fact she has done this before, the Novella "Memory Cage" has stated she has killed 9S 48+ times and the end of the game reveal she is a Model E Android task to kill 9S from discovering their dark secret, the issue is she fell in love with 9S and everytime she kills him and he forgets, it wounds her, so she always has to force that rule and act cold to limit any chances of strengthens that love, it's a desperate attempt to cope with it, her love shines the hardest in the Epilouge which has the most depressing ending I've seen and it really made me cry hard like Holy shit. Seriously tho that Emil Head Weapon story really changes things once you notice, and I only noticed a few weeks ago

A wonderful Video with a lot of heart and thought behind it clearly, Regarding the 3rd Option for Pascal's end, given the Machine's tendency to repeat their mistakes over and over again always made me think that wiping his memories was far more cruel, same with killing him... killing someone to "help" them over Heartbreak is an extreme way to "Help" anyone with their Grief... Leaving him, while cruel yes gives him the freedom to choose. To choose if he wishes to end his life or to overcome his grief and not repeat past mistakes but as usual everyone is free to interpret it as they do.

I've had this dispute with several other commenters. While I would agree with you, the hardest part of suicide or death is often those that are left behind. In Pascal's case, his loved ones are already gone. He has no one else to grieve him except you as the player. I can't imagine a scenario where my entire family was taken from me and I felt at fault for it. I was being hyperbolic in my presentation in the video. If I were truly in A2's place, I cannot say for sure how I would have reacted. You are right about the machines repeating their mistakes over and over again, but also Pascal is no longer apart of the network. Also I agree with the pod when he says there is a chance for things to be different in ending E. Thanks for participating in the conversation though and engaging with my video. I think I truly succeeded with this one as it has spurred on much conversation so that means that people were engaged by it.

Would you believe me if I said that is me after editing the mistakes? Lol but seriously 4 hours of talking into a microphone is taxing. Sometimes I think I can edit a part out and then when I'm editing, the cut version sounds more unsettling than the mistake itself. I'm getting better with each video though and I appreciate the encouragement.
