Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks is one of the more obscure texts in Friedrich Nietzsche’s corpus. There are many good reasons for this: it is unfinished, and ends abruptly; it was never published; and it concerns subject matter that is not as immediately accessible as Nietzsche’s more popular writings. You will not find his major concepts in this work - such as the will to power, or the critique of metaphysics - except insofar as those ideas appear in the background, inchoate, unnamed… not yet fully formed. In Nietzsche’s interpretation of the Pre-Platonic philosophers of Ancient Greece, we find the starting place for his later philosophical career. The inspiration for many of those great ideas, can arguably be found in his exegesis of these extraordinary figures from the Hellenic world, from the 6th to the 4th century BC. In this series we’ll consider Nietzsche’s view of Thales, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, Empedocles & Democritus.

Thoroughly enjoying this tour of the pre-Socratic Greek philosophers. And the continuous comparison with the ideas from Enlightenment philosophers. Puts many subjects into perspective.

It also makes me wonder about the parallels between the Empedocles/dog incident and the FN/horse incident. How bizarre eh?

@@christopherhamilton3621 The “Nietzsche” horse incident is most likely not a real event but a parallel between Dostoyevsky and Nietzsche. In Crime and Punishment, the main character experiences a painful dream after killing an old lady. The dream is of a boy seeing a horse carriage in which the horse is being brutally and relentlessly beaten by the carriage driver, eventually leading to the boy trying to hug the horse.

Really appreciate your channel! It is my wish to read all of the material you have to put these together! But in the meantime, your videos really enrich my life! Except every time you release a real fire video my hog Snookie gets out and then I have to go swine herding over the hollows. So fingers crossed to get through this without seeing the piggies run past the window!

Can anyone explain why the guy to the right of the subject in the painting (yellow toga) has two left arms?

There are other flaws too, the arm hanging under Empedocle's right arm doesn't line up with the arm above it. Also many of the background men's faces are identical.

Brilliant -Empedocles was an interesting person. I have not been able to find detailed info on his life though. Where did you find this?

Check out Nietzsche’s Pre Platonic Lectures translated by Gregory Whitlock for the main source for the episode. For more info on Empedocles, google Empedocles Fragments and you should be able to find them on Wikisource iirc.

@15:33 omg 😂 the koolaid must be strong to ascribe all of that retroactively and anachronistically to some dude that live more than 2000 years ago, based on no more than two pages of fragments...I mean the ...its not the narrators fault, its really the source which are academics (including Nietszche) who have an agenda. I mean its so stupid.
