IMPORTANT FOR 2020: PLEASE READ MY PINNED PUBLIC COMMENT BELOW BEFORE WATCHING!
Nigel Carren giving an interesting 360 degree tour of his latest creation from his workshop in France. This particular helmet is a reproduction 17th Century Polish Winged Zischagge or Szyszak. Much like the helmets and armour I made for the movie 1612, Taras Bulba, and Alexander The Neva Battle. This particular helmet is a faithful copy of a period helmet belonging to a member of 'The Guard of Augustus the Strong'. Visit the Nigel Carren KZfaq channel or www.nigelcarren.com for trailers showing my movie work, restoration before and after pictures, fashion and my contact details. I look forward to working with you in the future... A' bientot. Nigel Carren. www.nigelcarren.com

Hello armour and history fans, just a quick note to say I am currently trying to reinvigorate this channel with new content... my unique take on all of this rusty nonsense! But this time, I have not only bought a proper camera, but a microphone as well! 🙈 (shakes head in shame) 😂 So, if you like rivets, please subscribe for some REALLY geeky deep-dives. This coincides with a new website too, which is ONLY ten YEARS out of date! I haven't bothered with it in the past as I am busy making armour, but now I have been told the website is too old to work at all with smart-devices, NOW is the time for change! So, I shall see you on the field my friends. Best wishes from me and all the mice in the workshop. Nigel ⚒🐭🐭

Hello Segundajuganda, thank you for your comment mon ami. Yes, these are a nightmare to make as each of those little piercings are filed-out by hand with a needle-file. Yes, I remember the first time I saw one of these bolted to the wall of an English Castle, I was very young and thought "Can this be real"? As it turns out the Polish helmets and Polish Winged-Hussar armour had both Eagles beaks and Eagles wings everywhere, (wings with everything is what I call it!). I agree with you... fantastic looking armour that makes English armour from the same period look really rather dull!! Merry Xmas to you and see you in 2019 when I hope to shake-up this dead Channel of mine. 🎄

Outstanding work. On a different note: August der Starke(Strong) was born 1670 and became elected the king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth only 1697. Obviously this helmet can predate August´s reign.( Reg. 1:38)

Thank you for your comment Gordon but I was aware of that. Trust me.. the client I made this for was most particular... as are they all and as am I... This job has cost me my hair! 😂 Your predate point was what I was trying to illustrate in a cheeky-chap sort of way in this film, hence my pretending to be vague. In other words take an ordinary Dutch-Pot add wings call it Polish, take an ordinary Pikemans Pot, add stupid amount of decoration and a menpo and call it Japanese as worn by the Samurai 100 years after we were done with them at Naseby (Metropolitan Museum). I am reworking my near-dead channel at the moment so this would be a great subject to do, but first I have to finish The Tonlet, The Joust and The Gunshield movie, the props for which are currently ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE. Shoulder-Straps is another one... My aim is to make the most boring (riveting) videos on the subject on KZfaq, discussing the such subjects as 'The Magic Stretch' and 'How to spot a fake in 3 seconds'. 'How to slate a roof and why this is EXACTLY the same as a fencing gauntlet', and my favourite 'Henry and The Serpent'. Any suggestions you have would be welcome. I have read most of the books and I only agree with three of them... not telling you which. You are the first person who has not had a problem with my mentioning Augustus the Strong. I wish I had not deleted the CRAZY comments now. It was almost as absurd as the moment I discovered the armies of feminists who STILL REGULARLY religiously defend Henry VIII? (pun intended) Best wishes to you, and thank you for your input.

New channel terms in accordance with the 1998 Federal Trade Commission (F.T.C) C.O.P.P.A regulations (Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act) overseeing KZfaq from January 1st 2020. COPPA disclaimer/House Rules: If you are under 13 or considered a minor in your country, PLEASE DO NOT watch this video, this content is not intended for you (minors) for the following reasons: Working with boiling oil, acid, heavy hammers, shears, a 5-tonne press, razor-sharp red-hot steel, edged antique weapons and un-guarded grinders and power-tools with flying-belts is dangerous and can result in the loss of limbs, and is therefore ABSOLUTELY not for children! Also, this video contains adult language presented in a graphic undiluted adult tone where gruesome medieval warfare and its resultant injuries/deaths are discussed in graphic detail, with adult cultural references and adult humour presented by an angry bitter adult in his late forties, therefore none of this, is for the ears of children! If you are reading this and you are under 13 (or considered a minor in your country) IMMEDIATELY give whichever device you are unlawfully viewing this on back to your parents, and tell them to be more responsible from me… NOW! Also, any bad/foul language/idiots hating on each other in the comments section will be reported to KZfaq, ‘my manor… my rules’ thats that. I will NOT tolerate bullying either in the real or the virtual world. Workshop/Life Safety: Furthermore, the wearing and making of armour can be dangerous whether tools and armour are used/worn correctly or not. As it clearly states on my website (nigelcarren.com): ’Nigel Carren cannot accept responsibility for any injuries or damages resulting from its proper or improper use’. I (Nigel Carren) recommend that all makers and those thinking about making study the recommendations of the H.S.E (Health and Safety Executive) or comparable governing body in your country, to be sure you are working safe… that is if you are stupid enough to try and make armour yourself?… although I recommend you find a girlfriend instead. (Forgive me generalising, it is just that I have checked, and according to KZfaq, my channel demographic is a 34 year old singe male), and remember… ALL dust is dangerous! DO NOT SMOKE. Smoking is VERY bad for you. NEVER drink and drive. NEVER dive, climb or work sheet-metal alone. NEVER over-fill a frying pan. ALWAYS unplug an electric toaster before trying to remove ‘stuck’ toast. NEVER tell a girl you love her for the first time if you are horizontal, ONLY do this vertically! NEVER tell your wife you love her if you are vertical, ONLY do this horizontally! PAMPER your feet daily, because you never know when someone will insist your socks are coming off! ALWAYS be kind to animals or my Norse ancestors will flay you for all eternity. Data Collection: Never have I, nor would I know how to, nor would I need nor want to collect any personal data from any viewers or subscribers… your habits are your business! Back in 2012, (so as to not subject my subscribers to toothpaste commercials when they had clicked on a video to learn about 17th century helmets), I chose NOT TO monetise my videos, so as I understand it there have NEVER been any ads on my videos. Therefore, there has never been the opportunity for targeted advertising on my channel. But, in the event of my channel finally gaining 1000 subscribers, I will this time choose to monetise in order to try and make KZfaq financially self-sufficient, and therefore be able to MAKE the time to make better-quality videos, instead of trying to find the time to make hurried poor-quality videos with a camera that came free with 5-Litres of oil! In the event of my channel finally being monetised, any ads, if and when shown, would be selected & placed wholly by KZfaq, this would be outside the realms of my control as would be the harvesting of any data. The Seven Golden Rules of Lifemanship: 1) Question everything, especially if your teacher/preacher does not have any practical experience to balance their academic learning against, or you might just be playing a game of Chinese-Whispers. 2) ALWAYS look for the humour in everything, let this be your barometer for good mental health or life can sometimes be a bitter pill to swallow. 3) This is it, your ONLY chance, so let your heart be your compass and grab life's apple with both hands and swallow it whole... Including the pips! 4) Compliment a French woman in front of a fountain. 5) Learn to cook and then add Broccoli to everything. 6) Master at least one musical instrument, then write a song for someone that matters. 7) Win the trust of a cat. Thank you and best wishes. ©Nigel Carren (and all the mice in the workshop) All channel content is wholly the copyright of Nigel Carren as is all music/lyrics used, none of which can be copied/reproduced/reposted without first obtaining full written permission from me (Nigel Carren). © email: nigel@nigelcarren.com website: www.nigelcarren.com twitter: twitter.com/nigelcarren Instagram: instagram.com/nigelcarren Please subscribe for new 2020 ‘NOT FOR KIDS’ content provided that: A) You are NOT A KID (as outlined above) B) You have read and understood ALL of the above. Are there some with bigger facemasks? Awesome Era of Armor and Weapons
@nigelcarren
@nigelcarren 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Seychellenrik, great to read you. Yes you got that right. I don't think I explained in this video. The Nasal bar (in this example) is exchangeable with a wider one. I call these face-guards (like the 1612 armour I made on my website) and when this 'guard' covers the eyes I call them masks/visors (this is my rule and I am sticking to it) 😂. There is a full-face version which you might have seen. Though this is generally fitted to more of a siege-weight helmet, but the mask is long and protects the entire throat area. Nobody has ever confirmed if there is a proper Polish name for this mask/visor... I would love to know. I have always promised myself I would make one of these for my own collection on my down-time... and therein lies the problem... Flat-out working on commissions at the minute. Come back any time mon ami and as they used to say: "See you on the field"! Best wishes from me (and all the mice in the workshop) 🔨🐭🐭🐭

the exchangeable part and and the steel ,,cap" are unique compared to earlyer medieval helmets. Are they related to indo-persian helmets? They do look a little alike Greetings good craftmanship shall never be forgotten and the renaisance era combat too amazing evolution in technology
@nigelcarren
@nigelcarren 5 жыл бұрын
Hello again mon ami, you raise interesting points. Certainly some of the crusader helmets had fixed or hinged nasal-bars, but a 'sliding' nasal like this is not really medieval technology, perhaps because then they went with the full-face armour with hinged visor like the Bascinet or the HoundsKull/Hundskull hinged visor. Really because now we could make sheet-metal easier than before, hence no need to just rely on thin iron-bars for face protection. But as was the case in the 17th century the loss of peripheral vision and fatigue was a danger in itself, so armour went back to basics, (for the foot-soldier at least) .I think it was Shakespeare that said... "The greatest enemy of a knight is the armour itself" (he was referring to heat-exhaustion I believe). You mention Indo-Persian helmets. Well, I have worked on a few of these and I will go so far as to say they are on the whole Better/more heavy-duty than the european helmets in that, they had such a grasp of metallurgy and so much skill to hand, they were still making helmet-skulls/caps in one piece when in Europe we were now making them in two-halves, presumably to speed up production, as in Europe we did not have so much skill to hand... Hence prior to Henry VIII establishing The Greenwich armouries, we still relied on immigrants to do our skilled work.... Pretty much like London today!!... BOOM, and a topical joke at the end. 😂😂👍🏻
@Kinjia200euro

nigelcarren But the indo persians never had full plate armour i think They were more into linking plates with male. Maybe because of the different clima Don't you think european armour was the peak of armory?
@nigelcarren
@nigelcarren 5 жыл бұрын
We should have had a beer or at least a cup of tea to debate this. Good question again. Yes, to my knowledge they had predominantly one-piece skulls to their helmets, and yes their body armour was usually chain-mail or the lamellar/plate armour, laced together with rings rather like the Japanese stuff. Now obviously I have never fought in anger in either BECAUSE IT IS THE 21ST CENTURY. But I have cut the heads off weeds in both (its what I do to test armour in secret here in the country), and I can tell you I would prefer the linking plates, as you are less restricted. Also, rather like modern military armour (even Tank armour) we discovered not too long ago that many thin layers are better at slowing down a projectile compared to one heavy slow cumbersome lump of iron. Also and perhaps mot important of all... a layered/laminated armour absorbs a blow better than anything else... a sort of 17th century composite armour. Some Polish helmets are like this too... I would love to know if this was their intention or was their aim to make a helmet out of lots of plates was just to speed construction? To answer your question then, for me at least European armour was the peak of working full-plate armour, though this most not have been the most effective armour if we start to compare it to the asian armour. and lets not forget, that NONE of it could stop a bullet (though some breast and back-plates did during The English Civil War), and that was the end of it all as you know, because the only option to make them musket-ball proof was to make it even thicker... and the foot-soldiers already couldn't move in it. I will stop there or this will be the longest most boring KZfaq reply in history. 😱 Have a great day mon ami

Dear 'then benagz' great to read you sir, and thank you for stopping by and commenting. Yes, these are amazing helmets, it is a Winged Hussar helmet EXACTLY like this one which I accidentally spotted screwed to the wall at Lanhydrock in Cornwall England (a huge victorian house now owned by The National Trust).... My total fascination with this very helmet is one of the reasons I now make armour for a living. My finding this helmet that day was particularly memorable for me because immediately when I saw it I went to photograph it with a 1.2million pixel digital camera which was the size of my shoe and the price of a car (thats how long ago it was) and I was promptly told to 'GET OUT NO PHOTOS!!! ' Oh well.... so when I got home I soon realised I did not have the money to buy an antique Winged-Hussar helmet... so I taught myself how to make one.... Which I then sold. I regretting selling the first helmet I made so much, I offered my client an extra $500 to buy it back... he refused! I laugh about that now. Nowadays it is not so difficult to part with my creations.... in fact I like knowing they are dotted around the planet. Best wishes from me and all the mice in the workshop.
