Farage is correct in that the modern Tory party only believe in one thing - tax cuts for the already rich. Although he is wrong about the smoking ban, it has been a huge success. What is killing the pub trade, is not the smoking ban, but cheap as water alcohol from the supermarkets.

+joseph4861 Yeah, agreed I'm glad there's a public smoking ban. I think he doesn't enjoy the smoking ban, firstly because he's a smoker, and secondly because its the government interfering in daily lives too much

yep, that's correct. here in australia anyway i rarely go to the pub because prices are absurdly high compared to the big name bottle-shops. you're paying triple the price for beer and over 5 times the price for spirits at the pub, it's insane. (for example, you'd pay $23 for a double-shot vodka + redbull, you could make that same drink yourself for $4.)

Has anyone ever completed research aimed at measuring the amount of pleasure given to people by alcohol? It would be stupid to create a pricing structure that would punish poor people. Much better to trust families and schools to educate children on how to enjoy alcohol without detriment to their health.

People abuse alcohol. So what? Why punish those who buy and use alcohol responsibly, just people some people are reckless? Can't we enjoy a nice drink? If you tax alcohol, place restrictions and/or place minimum pricing on it too much, then people will end up making their own alcohol and/or buying it illicitly. Any focus should be on dealing with drunks who engage in reckless and illegal behaviour, and not with making alcohol more expensive and difficult to get for everyone.

There isn't the same level of drunkeness in pubs and bars in mainland European countries because people don't buy drinks in rounds and instead order drinks individually with each one paying for their own drink so that they drink at their own pace. When a group of say eight men enter the pub eight rounds have to be bought so that everyone takes their turn at buying and nobody owes anybody anything by the time they leave. Which means they are drinking at the same pace and all consuming the same number of pints as there are in the group and pretty drunk by the end of the evening. This has to stop.

the french wine industry would be well FO if there was a min price set on alcohol, and the german and other european beer manufacturers. thus the european market would say a big no to minimum prices. the sale of alcohol brings in big money to there respected states from the UK.

The religion of alcohol has huge significance in English based culture. The pressure to drink at a young age is hard to defer. Brand names take on the significance of historical heroes. The type of alcohol consumed often entirely defines a social event (and what will happen after).

Yeah great idea, let's stop poor people enjoyin themselves, one more control mechanism. Campbell is one of those who helped completely destroy pub culture in England and helped Blair in the run up to the illegal Iraq war - OK there are addicts who need help, but most people just want to go for a few drinks in the evening to relax after a long day, and not pay 5 quid for a pint in the process. He used the example of the few addicts to adopt a general principle for the many, and the bastard is still trying to do this. I really would like to see him on trial for his role in the Iraq war and stop patronising the vast majority who, unlike him, do not have a drink problem. Most people want to pay as little as possible for booze and do not want criminals like him telling us what to do.

The easy way to deal with it is to move the NHS to a Singapore system. 80% of all healthcare problems arise from peoples personal choices in life, once we all start paying for our own sins- Obesity, smoking, drinking. Everyone can take personal responsibility

I've noticed something, and I'm not saying this from a sexist point of view, but I've noticed that when Nigel is being interviewed by women they always seem to be very angry and hostile but when being interviewed by men they are most of the time calm and collected. Does anybody know why this is, I can only imagine that it's because boys are taught throughout their entire childhood that boys don't cry and get upset, whereas girls are encouraged. So when boys grow up it becomes second nature to be calm, whereas when girls grow up it's second nature to allow your emotions to control your judgment, but can anyone think of any other reason because I can't, I find it very interesting.

LOL what a comment!! Girls are encouraged to cry and get upset are they? News to me. I'd say that you've made a pretty big generalisation, i'm sure there are plenty of exceptions to your theory. Did you maybe think that he could be antagonistic and deliberately rile up the women that he speaks to, in order to belittle them? The man is a small minded idiot so it wouldn't shock me that he would dislike women.

Very interesting. I am inclined to agree with Farage. You can't force a behavioural change in society by increasing the price of alcohol. We're too far gone. Perhaps when the harmful health effects of binge drinking start coming to light it will force a sea change. I drink far too much when I go out but I think myself and the vast majority of guys and girls in their mid-twenties feel invincible. If a doctor checked out my liver and told me I was killing myself, I'd cut down for sure. Until that happens, or a similar shock is administered, then I don't think anything is going to change. Perhaps we need to introduce something like annual compulsory health checks for youngsters? Increasing alcohol pricing my 20p or putting up "drink responsibly" posters is going to do jack shit.

Labour thought to bring more revenue would be to open Pubs 24/7 !! and Tories and even UKIP miss the point !! Personally i think the Old times were good !! but then again i think Public houses should not be allowed to sell alcohol Until After work Hours For Public Safety !! I think People should have a Limit to what quantity they are aloud to drink in some form of chip card which expires when the person has reached the set limit. People would have to obtain this card via the Government to prove age. This could be put in place for other soft drugs ie cannabis !! This would free up valuable police time to catch real criminals !!

"Politically" he's riding a wave created by him by politicians who don't say what they mean because they - even Cameron - are cowered by the press & broadcast media (Labour an especial victim). Farage is also extraordinarily lucky in having a British media who are desperate for "the story", meaning they've given he and UKIP far, far more publicity, usually extremely flaccid, than they deserve. Why hasn't the Green Party with their 2million votes in the May elections achieved even a fraction of the coverage UKIP has? Because the media are self-serving instead of doing justice to democratic principles. I don't accept that Farage is "clever". There is no sign yet that he is a good tactician. And his diagnosis of what Britain's ills are, and what is causing them, is anything but clever; rather they are bloated by bias, prejudice and hatred and wholly unsupported by evidence. I'd like to see a political journalist who actually knows a lot about the EU and its work, simply test Farage's claim that EU is damaging Britain and British interests. And ask him how leaving it would solve its social and economic problems. make it more prosperous and better defended. For that matter, I'd like to see Redwood and the other mad Tory hyenas answer the same questions. If they were properly tested I have no doubt that they'd be revealed as Grand Patriots, obsessed with the simple and simplistic notion that Britain "alone" apparently "running its own affairs" (which you can't anyway in a globalised economy), would be nicer, better, more efficient, more profitable, more capable of safeguarding its interests (such as economic and in the realm of defence). There's nothing "clever" in taking a position: it's an emotional decision, based on a belief in British superiority. They can dress it up all they want, that's all they have. That and their belief that they can win a Tory majority that can protect the country from being infected by liberal ideas, let alone liberal or social democrat policies. Read British history in the 20s and 30s and realise that the right-wing of the Tory party and UKIP are as close to fascist ideas as makes very, very little difference. This contention may read as contentious but it is supported by far more evidence than that which purportedly supports the thesis that Britain is better off out of the EU.

Alcoholism is, of course, caused by EU policies (which doesn't entirely explain why most EU countries have less of a problem). No doubt it will get MUCH better after Brexit. And, if it doesn't, perhaps they can siphon off a few pounds from that £350 million that's going to start rolling in each and every week very soon to deal with the problem?

There is an essential problem that T.S Eliot underlined when he said "humankind can't very much bear reality" - as long as people lead stressful and depressing lives and want to escape reality because it is deeply unpleasant there will always be a market for alcohol and other drugs. Having said that I think it would help if young people whose lives have been ruined by alcohol abuse went and talked at some secondary schools. Not so everyone becomes teetotal when adult- but so young people learn the dangers of excess - which they will not learn so well from people much older than them.
