Please could you ask him why he has to bring up football so often and what he thinks doing so is supposed to achieve? He's been at it for years and it's not benefitted rugby in any way at all, so why do it? I know several people who have been put off rugby because of the sanctimonious attitude he promotes.

Should it be ‘time off’ whilst scrums are setting? Some teams use this to waste time and it is dull and frustrating to watch. So, time off when the scrum is called and time on when the ref calls ‘set’?

Thinking of the comment made about putting the ball in a scrum reminded me of seeing a game about 5-6 years ago, a scrum half put the ball perfectly in the middle of the tunnel and it stayed there for a few minutes with neither hooker even attempting to hook the ball back.

Why are Nigel Owens and rugby fans so obsessed with football? Why not just enjoy rugby? Football has got nothing to do with it.

@@Leifr952 it goes back to a comment Nigel made to Stuart Hogg after he kind of dived a little in the Scotland South Africa match during the 2015 World Cup.
@Leifr952
@Leifr952 3 жыл бұрын
@@Anthony-mt7qr Thanks but I'm already aware of the origin of the comment. My point was, why is the rugby world so obsessed with football in the first place? Following the Hogg dive all Owens had to do was penalise the offender and leave it at that, but he had to bring up football, really for no valid reason. Now that corny catchphrase is a cornerstone of the rugby psyche and it's become soul-drainingly tedious. It was funny the first time; now all it does is highlight the collosal chip on rugby's shoulder that the sport will never lose if it continues to compare itself to football.
@Anthony-mt7qr
@Anthony-mt7qr 3 жыл бұрын
@@Leifr952 there is no obsession as I see it with football, there are a great many fans of both sports, not to mention you have people comparing Union and League. What I find is that rugby players tend to respect the ref a bit more. The fact that diving had become such a big and obvious issue lead to the remark. This isn't about which is better, more that one had become such a joke in regards. Not just rugby fans but fans of Basketball and American Football make references to diving.
@Leifr952
@Leifr952 3 жыл бұрын
@@Anthony-mt7qr But why does diving in football matter to rugby fans? It doesn't have any bearing on rugby. Pompously lecturing football about diving (and pretty much everything else) seemingly takes precedence over actually enjoying rugby for many. If it's not an obsession then why do they bring it up so often?

Hello Nigel. You're a legend. Here's a question for you. If a player is substituted, leaves the pitch, substitute comes on THEN the TMO alerts the ref to an incident/yellow/red card by the substituted player. What happens ?
@boiledegg6788
@boiledegg6788 3 жыл бұрын
You should ask this in the latest Nigel Owens World Rugby video, but typically I think the referee would call the substituted player back on the pitch then card the player which would disallow the substitution overall.

Couldn't agree more with the replacements law. Go one step further and only allow medical replacements (using an independent doctor, his prognosis for a recovery is in effect a ban for that period - you pays your money and you takes your chances). The law change has allowed for 50 minute players and that means bulk without skills. 80 minute players carry no excess baggage, you just can't play the game if you crouch over for a scrum and the belly hits the turf with a Norgen-Vaaz schloomph. Then waddle over to the lineout needing a shower and an ice pack so you can see the players.

Hello Nigel. Well, Wales almost got what they deserved, if it wasn’t for last minute stupidity against France they would not have needed to wait for Scotland to help them out. I’m English start to finish (well getting there, I’m 75) I follow England, Wales, Australia in that order. My team England, finished in the wrong position, they should be 6th not 5th, thank god for Italy. I have been to several games between England and other countries and can honestly say the best was always against Wales. The welsh are superb vocal people, I love ‘em. Grand Slam next year then ? I hope your farm venture goes well, please continue with these Utube vids of the farm.

Not like you to avoid an answer Nigel, on the subject of a scrum half not putting the ball in straight you said we would have to ask the scrum half for the answer. When we know that players will play to the Referee`s whistle so if you let them get away with it they will carry on doing it, so its down to the Ref to stop it, I was once told by an East Midlands Refereethat they had has a directive from the RFU to allow it so as to keep the game flowing to please the paying spectators ?

I remember Owens arguing with Brian Moore on the radio about crooked feeds at scrums that the referee had too much to do at the scrum and check the the straightness of the put in. As long the refs allow the scrum halves to feed the ball to their own forwards they will do, making a mockery of all the fuss about binding, setting the scrum. Otherwise just be like Rugby League and have uncontested scrums. They have been abandoned during the pandemic, possibly for good.
@simonwilkins8829
@simonwilkins8829 3 жыл бұрын
The scrum half is allowed to feed the ball to his own forwards, it's the reward they get for winning the scrum. 19 15.f "The scrum-half may align their shoulder on the middle line of the scrum, thereby standing a shoulder-width closer to their side of the scrum."

@simonwilkins8829
@simonwilkins8829 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrDavidht I see, if you meant chucking it diagonally, then you have a point. Although there's no law against spinning the ball so it bounces to your side. On the other hand, a lot of people also seem to falsely believe that the ball needs to be thrown directly into the middle of the scrum. Apologies if I confused you for one of them.
@MrDavidht
@MrDavidht 3 жыл бұрын
@@simonwilkins8829 Please don't apologise it was new to me that a scrum half could align his shoulder down the middle of the tunnel. Having looked up the law it seems it does allow the scrum half the latitude of putting the ball as you say, but does not specifically say "straight'. I think laws 21, 22 and 23 infer that ball must go in front of the front row. I can see the law makers are trying to make the game safer and I believe they are heading to uncontested scrums. Would save time.
